  • Reigning World Cup champions South Africa have established global connections, which are slowly turning into a tug-of-war between the Southern and Northern Hemisphere.
With the strength of domestic and schoolboy rugby in South Africa, it's simple to see why everyone wants a piece of South African rugby.
Although, a lot of damage has already been caused to Australia, New Zealand and Argentina, with more possibly on the way.

The South African perspective: the reason why we left the Super Rugby Comp was initiated 100% by NZ, who raised various reasons why they thought Super Rugby should change in ways that would entirely be unsuitable for SA Rugby. That this was done without consulting their South African counterparts smacked of arrogance and a willingness by NZ Rugby to get rid of SA Rugby. The sacrifices SA Rugby had to overcome every season to be part of the Super Rugby comp was never acknowledged by NZ or Aus. In fact, it often felt as if they were doing SA a favor to allow us to be part of the comp, notwithstanding the fact that SA provided the lions' share of income. When news arrived our shore of NZ's plans to do away with us, South African Rugby acted swiftly; this was obviously done to keep our own rugby alive. That we were quickly accepted by the Northern rugby organizations validated our contribution to world rugby, something the Southern Nations never did.

EDIT: To all the people that have been replying to me over the past couple months telling me I don't know what I'm talking about, so do you finally see it? The bok thrashing at Twickenham a couple weeks ago and the ARROGANT response from some of your pundits? What about last night in the opening game against France? What excuses will you guys have now? The fact of the matter is that New Zealand is no longer the all conquering All Blacks of years gone by, other teams have figured them out. The sooner you guys figure that out and adjust accordingly the sooner you will be back to dominating.

Truth be told SA leaving super rugby was in the mix for as long as I can remember. The pandemic helped with that too. While it did leave a huge gap with the departure of SA teams it no doubt the competitive of the competition has declined. But in saying that it has open up an opportunity for the likes of Japan, the pacific nations and Argentina to step in and step up. I don't think rugby down south has got worse but more so slowly evolving. And soon to follow the competitive nature of the super rugby competition. The way I see it , it a win for SA to go north and a win for southern hemisphere rugby nations.

SA teams could maybe look for a base in Europe for the season, but that isn't exactly good for home supporters. Although at a push I would suggest Germany as it has plenty of excellent stadiums, great transport links and no issues with teams in the tournaments/league's.

I can't say an expanded six nations is good right now. Just yet. For rugby as a sport. It's important to make sure that the western sides rugby builds up before South Africa leave. And that starts with first, Argentina and SA being in the same comp. With that, soon hopefully Fiji, Japan, join in the rugby championship. And later on America and Canada if they grow fast enough. Which at that point, if the game closes up, South Africa can go uo north to Europe for good. The southern hemisphere at the moment need money. And have none of it. NZ have a bit, but Rugby is dying in NZ due to many reasons. Rugby as a sport will die worldwide if SA join the six nations. It may be good for South African rugby short term. @@DJ-ce3hq Rugby wont be dying any time in coming decades. It may be weakening in NZ a bit due to the lack of SA teams in Super Rugby but there is no way that it will die there. NZ and Aus made a massive mistake by treating SA the way that they did. SA also had money problems for a few years but with the competitions up north the money is flooding back in again. There is a good chance that Argentina will go the way of SA and start an American competition with the US and Canada and possibly another team. Rugby is growing quite quickly in the US and the US have huge money to fund it as well. It just isn't as big a pro sport as American Football yet. At university level it is growing massively in the US and has been since the 1990s. I predict that in years to come, NZ will generally become a weaker team challenging for 3rd spot in world rankings and I reckon the US will move into the top 6. The biggest threat to rugby as a whole right now are the fat twats sitting in the UK making up rules that make the game more and more like soccer and American football. I didn't mind losing to NZ teams as the competition kept the South strong but with the time zones I barely got to watch the NZ and Pumas games, the league had been changing formats so many times with the additional teams, my team (Stormers) was spiraling and I eventually started losing interest. Covid really played an impact on how much we missed sport once it was all gone, so now many of us don't take it for granted anymore. With us Joining the URC, its sparked a new interest out of curiosity, the teams all looked competitive, the teams have different styles of play and the Rugby became entertaining to watch, suddenly my team ends up in the Finals and wins the damn league in the first season with an all South African Final, insane... The Stormers actually won a major trophy!! That final was not only great for the Stormers fans but for the whole of SA, the stadiums are getting packed, the love for the game is back and that was a big wake up call to the rest of the Northern teams in the league to show that its not a one horse race anymore and there's new healthy competition in the league. Fast forward to the present, and we back with another Stormers finals only this time against Munster and OMG... not only the city of Cape Town but the Country is buzzing, many local rival fans are flying down to watch the game live and It's so good to see that we sold out a 55 000 seat stadium within 3 hours of tickets being released. Great unbiased and objective video. SA, NZ and AUS will always have a great history of top clashes on the pitch and for maintaining a high level of competitiveness between the nations. These teams would benefit from the Trinations and SR structures and the World Cups would typically be dominated by teams from the Southern Hemisphere.
Time zones and travel considerations will always be a factor but I’d still like to see the Rugby Championships proceed.
Adding a few more teams to the 6-nations could bloat the season schedule as there could be 6-7 games over the tournament period.
As a South African, I used to love waking up to the 9am or 11am games of SR.
The viewing times were not too favourable for AUS and NZ teams when travelling to SA.
Viewership and sponsorship goes hand in hand and was also a big consideration by Sanzaar.

Well, it's always easy to be wise in hindsight, but I would say, looking at Springbok rugby now, as well as our local domestic game, SA Rugby is in remarkably good shape. As a rugby fan I scarcely noticed the loss of Super Rugby, as the UK / Europe games that SA teams play in are such a high standard. Contrast that with Australia now, and the indications also that NZ is apparently struggling to stay at the top. Remember also that South Africa had decades of playing ONLY domestic Rugby. That's one reason our roots in the game go so deep.

As a rugby fan it was always great seeing the best players from SA in the comp the travel I think affected all the teams, I feel the travel is what has helped us prepare for world cup success our players are already conditioned to being away from home and family for a period of time, maybe this is why the south has won 8 of the past 9 world cup's the travel is just part of the job. The difference I see now in the north at this time they have a lot more amazingly talented rugby players and have the coaches to bring out the best of them.
Any way cannot live in the past super rugby isn't that super anymore, now the quarter finals are almost here we will all see after this weekend who will stay and who will go home all the best to SA and all the teams from the south lets blow this up.

Irish fan here in Leinster. I think the addition of SA teams in the URC has been fantastic. Its a great competition now, and Ive really enjoyed getting to see the new rivalries grow, e.g., the Munster - Stormers final build up was great and the game itself was real, top-class cup rugby.
The old Pro-16, Celtic Cup etc was a poor tournament dominated by Leinster, and now the URC is a great product and the benfits to the Northern hemisphere are obvious. On the flip side, it seems to me like the NZ/Aus axis has notably declined since the move and NZ isnt the same beast at all anymore, which could intensify going forward.
In my view, it was a dreadful own goal by the Kiwis to let the South Africans go... theyre now stuck with the Aussies, who have little interest anymore, and they arent playing at the same intensity, witj due respect, the Polynesians wont cut it as yearly opposition.

Saffa here. I have genuine nostalgia for the rugby that was played during the S12 and S14. The moment the competition was enlarged beyond 14 teams, it started losing its attraction. S12 and S14 was truly a breeding ground for excellence, but the money hungry administrators on all 3 sides wanted more and more. They kicked the goose that lay the Golden egg to death.
I for one would be happy for SA to return to a S12 format, but that won't happen for 20 years now. The north is already seeing the benefit of playing against the SA the massive SA teams week in and out. The semi decline (yet still the team to beat in the world) of the All Blacks coincided almost perfectly with the departure of SA from Super rugby.

Have to disagree that South Africa leaving is the reason for the demise of Southern Hemisphere rugby. It's more due to the outdated model (the reason that SA left) that SANZAAR and especially the NZRU are pushing. Gone are the days that super rugby was stacked full of talent as now not only the top players are leaving for Europe or Japan at the peak of their powers but the players that are on the verge of making the international teams are leaving (guys like Nankivell going to Munster, PGS to Clermont and the possibility of Faiangainuku going to Toulon).

On another note, I found the arrogance of some of the NZ media (JK - Breakdown) to be unbelievable, we were just taken completely for granted. Happy that SA are participating in a leveling of the global playing field. It would be great to go back to the old tour days of NZ & Oz, I.e., B & I Lions format. Great video. It's a big conversation here in SA. Some fans miss SR rugby, but the vast majority are really enjoying the new time zones and the exposure to NH club teams.
It's been a steep learning curve in terms of a manging squads across multiple competitions, but if it pans out SA franchises will be more professional for it and sport squads with more depth and ability to retain top talent due to the financial benefit of the move to the NH.
You did well to summarise the reasons SA left SR. SA contributed the most viewership and the Supersport deal was a big deal for SR. The jump in URC viewership is proof of this. The feeling I got is that SARVU (and for that matter the SA rugby fans) got tired of being treated like shite by what seemed to be a really arrogant NZRU. Also from a TV money point of view, SA was providing the bulk of Super Rugby/Rugby Championship viewers so with the Boks withdrawing that in theory means less TV revenue for NZ and Australia.

Whereas SA takes advantage of more money in the NH & more varied competition. The Boks will also move North as part of this strategy. SA with it's massive player base now has the best of all worlds to drive itself to world #1 and stay there.

As with cricket, rugby has done the same dirty on South Africa. Governing bodies make decisions without RSA's inclusion in the process and then require all of RSA to just accept and go with it. Their calling time on it was the right thing to do. FFS...RSA is the current world champs and is tied with NZ for most world cup wins, even though we played in two less competitions due to isolation. One would think that including RSA in world rugby decisions would be a no-brainer...but no. Since I lost satellite sports 3 years ago when we moved I havent kept up to date with actual rugby performances, but I have caught onto the fact that my local rugby team (Stormers) was doing extremely well in a European competition. I subsequently registered for a streaming package and caught the Stormers game against Connacht in Cape Town this last Saturday. It was an extremely entertaining rugby game that the Stormers won. We now have a strong team in the final of the URC competition that will attempt to defend their 2022 title against Munster on 27 May 2023. This competition was vital for South African rugby. Not only are the franchise teams competing on an equal footing (time zones with reasonable travel schedules), but we are also seeing what MORE teams are doing outside of South Africa and the northern hemisphere. Us leaving Super Rugby, and perhaps even eventually the Rugby Champs, should be seen a loss for NZ and Australia...not to RSA. It was not our doing and we simply rolled with the punches and made the game more fair for ourselves while earning more money for our franchises in the process. I'm there for the ride.

    From a South African perspective.
If you want Rugby to grow in South Africa, you need to go back to merit based selection.
South African teams are not selected on merit but rather on the color of your skin.
South African fans are fed up with this... so we don't watch provincial rugby.
This also leads to a vicious cycle of lack of money in our clubs and our best players being poached by European clubs, that do select on merit.
We are then left with lower quality players playing the domestic game. And the vicious cycle being reinforced.
Be honest and see if for what it is.
Also, this does not mean that we don't want to see players of colour. ... some of our best players are players of colour.
We just simply want the peace of mind, that our teams are selecting the best players to play each other in our beloved game.... and that the politicians are keeping them selves out of it.

This video is pretty much spot on. NZ and Aus became arrogant over the many years that SA was part of Super Rugby. NZ seemingly also got to the point of being almost complacent about the setup. The timezones definitely played a massive role in the decision but let us not also forget the unfair distribution of revenue when considering the huge expenses for SA teams to travel and also considering that Aus was contributing the least in terms of teams and viewership. In my view it was absolutely the right move by SA to move provincial/club to the northern hemisphere. Not to mention that the revenue is the north is huge by comparison. The other SANZAAR countries should really be making up huge incentives for SA to stay in the international competition in the southern hemisphere otherwise the likes of NZ can kiss their dominance of international rugby goodbye and Aus will dwindle. Argentina have the least to lose since most of their international players are already playing in the European system. Over to you NZ and Aus. Let's hear what you carrot you have to dangle.

    Another SA perspective - Man the early years of this competition were absolutely amazing! Way before recorded games came along, getting up early to watch the super 10 was outstanding viewing, and the super 12 built on that, for a good 10 years this was the world's premier rugby championship. Quite how it fell from grace is multi-faceted;
    1. Greed - Administrators extending the no of teams to increase profit and players seeking more bucks north, both diluted the talent on display.
    2. Persistent tinkering with rule changes and sub-standard refereeing - Rugby is a complicated sport, there was always a gap between the rules and the referee's (+ assistant + technology shortfall) ability to implement them. Increasing the no of rules has compounded this. An increase in the complexity of rugby's rules needed to coincide with an increase in the standard of both referee and TMO's performance and technology advancements. This never happened, and now referees are influenced by the the crowd and local TV production crews more so than ever before.Equally so, world rugby has never and seemingly will never, take any accountability for this. Also, IMO the referees, regardless of above are inferior in quality to yesteryear.
    3. When SuperRugby first birthed rugby had only recently gone professional - Since professionalism the game has gradually become more stale as a prodcut to the end viewer. This is because of advancements in both coaching, conditioning and technical analysis. There is less space, and there is less innovation. Teams play not to lose, rather than too win. There are teams that are an exception to this but by and large this remains true.
    4. In South Africa, all of our stadiums are at least 40 000 plus, incredibily difficult to fill them in light of points made above. Using the supply and demand notion of business; it would be far better to have smaller stadiums that are full - this would create demand - rather than large stadiums that are only sold out when a test match is in town.
    5. People are just so much busier than they used to be. I know people who used to be die hard cricket and rugby supporters. They confess that pts 1-3 are a factor, but also they work their rear ends off all week and their weekends are taken up in totality by their children's sporting and school activities.
    5. The move north has at least breathed life into this paradigm. It's new, the timezones work.
    6. The most important next steps include a global season, salary caps, and most importantly an increase in the quality of refeereing and a decrease in the complexity of the rules. If we want to grow rugby in the US ahead of the next +1 world cup, this is absolutely imperative.

A two-year cycle between world cups? How would that work? So eg 2024, 2026, 2028, etc?

@@fidget2020 I did find an article to share, but it hasn’t posted unfortunately, it’s also going to avoid Lions Tours, during those years Northern Hemisphere teams will do traditional tours of the Southern Hemisphere.
But you are correct, so South Africa (for example) would play England, Ireland & Scotland home & away in 2026 then in 2028 would play Wales, France & Italy home and away

Let's all be honest, the main reason Super Rugby and the Rugby Championship attracted excitement was due to the SA vz NZ rivalry. Australia was not an attraction then and still isn't. An annual test series between SA and NZ would be way better than including other teams just because they are from the south. I used to wake up at wee hours to catch the games, but can't remember the last time I bothered. We have so much quality rugby now every weekend, at decent time slots, that we are spoiled for choice. My guess is that the Rugby Championship will fade away and what is left of Super Rugby will become nothing more than a provincial level tourny, watched only by the locals.

Always find it funny that South Africans have this delusion that they are somehow better than Australian teams. Since the inception of Super Rugby both Aus and SA have the exact same number of Trophies with 3 each. Also I find it really strange that you think that you think the Springboks are anything close to the All Blacks.

While I'm at it, I'd like to point out that the only people that think Super Rugby has gotten worse is by enlarge South Africans. Most Kiwis and Aussies are happy that games arent being played at ridiculous hours due to time zone differences and also that players from Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa are getting their opportunity to play at a professional level with the new franchise teams. Sometimes things will be better with you. Sometimes better without you. Time to move on dude.

@thomasrodwell563 Yeah, Super rugby has had its highest viewing figures in NZ than it's had for at least 5 years.
A lot of that helps now that the SA teams are no longer in it, which makes the viewing time so much better for NZ and Aus fans. Super rugby is definitely picking up some steam in these last few weeks, and it will be interesting to see how it pans out over the next few years.
This comp definitely has a lot more potential now that all the teams are in the same time zones.

The real issue with Super Rugby is that the sport is dying a slow death in Australia. I love that there are still a few passionate union supporters in Aus, but the truth is Rugby union is being outcompeted by the AFL and NRL for talent and audiences. It has been on a slow decline for over a decade. Hopefully hosting the RWC will give Australian Rugby a boost, but it is likely to be a temporary one. Without a strong Australian component, Super Rugby is really a NZ domestic comp with some practice games against the Aussie cousins who couldn't get into the NRL. 5:34
