Small Tip for Corolla users who experienced heating when driving above 120 km/h - first clean ribs of radiator. Then if it made no difference, try replacing the coolant as shown in video.
Hi, Thanks for good comment.
- The torque specification for the coolant drain plug on the engine is 8.0 Nm (80 kgf•cm / 69 in•lbf) for the 1ZZ-FE and 3ZZ-FE engines.
- The coolant capacity is 7.4 L for cars that are left hand drive (LHD) without cold designation . 8.1 L with ‘cold designation’.
RHD vehicles are 7.5 L and 8.3L respectively.

thanks for another great video your a great automotive instructor you should become a teacher. keep them videos coming. thanks.
Hey Peter great illustrative vids.. I have a question though. I am not locating the 10mm bolt on the engine block to drain the fluid from the engine. In your vid its on the same side with the oil cap just under a little. Not finding it on my 2005 toyota corolla
Hi, here is video, where you can see the drain bolt. Link here: ua-cam.com/video/OHwXZifEGpQ/v-deo.html
Peter, I changed my 1995 corolla coolant and I put new coolant and my car radiator is smoking. Please can you help me and to explain.
Hey, thank you for your vids. Very helpful! I have a question. I flushed the system 3 times with water. Then i filled up the radiator with 50/50 coolant and ran the car for 20 minutes. I tested the 50/50 coolant before i put it into the car and it was down to -38 celsius. Now when its in the car and mixed with the water in the engine its up to -22 celsius. I need it to be 50/50.. I drained from the bottom of the radiator for about 1 litre and added about 1 liter 100% coolant in the expansion tank cause the expansion tank went empty instead of the radiator(Another fail. Did not open the radiator at the top). But after 15 minutes on the highway the liquid from expansion tank is still not mixtured with the liquid in the engine and radiator. Shall i just wait x miles to get it mixtured or do i have to drain/fil the radiator instead? Its about 4 months until it gets cold so its really no hurry.. The real question is: Do the coolant in the expansion tank EVER get mixed with the rest of the system?
+tdeimos Hello. The coolant mix is to best insert first to radiator and second to the expansion tank. Normally there is only very little movement back from the expansion tank to the radiator.
The higher freeze temperature is because there was still water in the engine block. After you flush and drain, add 50% of your cooling systems full capacity with concentrated coolant. Then fill the rest up with water so you will have 50/50 coolant and water
peter, i was told either toyota red or toyota pink will corrode my head gasket seal in my 2003 toyota corolla d4d 2.0 litre. Please advice which toyota coolant is best for my 2003 corolla. thank you, great work.
Hey Peter I have a 13’ Corolla. According to the service manual, it says to just drain from the one petcock at the bottom of the radiator. Is there a way to drain the block? Perhaps removing the engine coolant temperature sensor? Or should I just drain the radiator, fill with distilled water to flush it, run it for a while to circulate, drain again, and then finally fill with normal coolant?
Peter Finn I figured. Haha I’ll do some research on it. Do you know if I’d be able to reach it from the bottom or from up top? Does it require sealant from I thread it back into the block?
Only water because it's summer time?
That's such a bad idea because of the risk of corrosion, always use coolant no mater what the weather is.
Use water for flushing the system only.
Nice video , it helped a lot!
I just did this job today, the one thing that really helped me was a mirror to see the second drain hole at the back of the engine block!
Good work on the video!
Hi, please add also Coolant liquid 50%, because on rust and corrosion risk
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor just finished my coolant change now!
I found the Toyota recommended coolant is pink OAT type!
Thank you for your help.
You usually tout genuine Toyota parts and fluids, not this time? How often would you suggest this service? My last time was 25k miles ago and it cleared a P0128 code, I'm now getting P0125 and wonder if coolant might affect? I'm not at 2.5 years yet on Toyota Coolant and Toyota says 3 years, others say 6, you say 3?
I think in another of your videos you show removing the alternator and the thermostat. I hesitantly did that because I want to install a new thermostat anyway. I pulled alternator and when reinstalling, how to know there is enough tension on the belt, does it automatically set to max tension? Thanks!
It is automatic, because it is Toyota ! World Quality Leader Number 1.
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor Yes no. 1! I superflushed it over a week, installed new tstat and fresh Toyota 50/50 with distilled, heats up faster, no more code and runs like a champ.
Mr Finn, thank you for another good video.I use only genuine Toyota "Long Life" Antifreeze/Coolant,here in the Vancouver ,Canada.I mix it with Distilled Water only.(I'm little bit anal, when it comes to my wheels)Factory recommends Percent Concentration of Antifreeze of 65% for Freezeng Point- -56 C,and Boiling Point of 134 C.Percent Concentration of 50% for Freezeng Point-37 C,and Boiling Point of 109 C.So,I use mixtuire of Antifreeze and Water, whole year.Antifreeze protects engine from corrosion as well, beside maintaining proper operating temperature. One thing amazes me in Europe is,how much less of maintenance is required comparing to vehicles in the North America, but at same time you drive much more aggressive and your speed limit is often twice faster than here.
+Broj 1 Hello, You service your Toyota by excellent way. Thank You for your comment. :-)
I wouldn't open radiator cap but only bottom plug! In this way coolant will go out of radiator and coolant container too! Flash container with warm tap water before level will go to the bottom twice!
Is thery any bolt or valve in engine block to remove also the coolant from there? I think freeze valve dont remove all the coolant
How much coolant will left if im not open this bolt? I want to replace all the coolant and i can only open the valve in radiator.Help me!
Corolla 2009 1.8L. 2zr sport vvt-i ---- How can I unclog the water discharge from the radiator if I remove the drain plug and the coolant does not come out? Please . Thank you for your tips or ideas.
hello!, the tap back must be left open when the new liquid filled?
Actually no need to open back tap. Only radiator cap open, then motor starting, and keep then motor running about 30 min and same time fill the radiator full ! And radiator cap can be open all time.
+Peter Finn thank you very much for the reply, was a great help !! I have this model of Corolla and your videos are a great help for me, thanks!!👍👍
good vid!
What is the reasoning to turn on heat to max and let it run? to get air out the system?
So with what was done all the coolant was drained or some was left in the system?
Hey is there a way I can ask you a question with a picture?
Peter Finn I just found out my hose is leaking antifreeze that was my picture question, but thank you for replying!
isnt it suppose to be the red antifreeze?
+Peter Finn be careful, nor all colors work. of you use the incorrect type of coolant you could fuck the gasket. check car manual.
You are right Fredy. There is plently of sources for Asian antifreeze including WM.
How many euros cost to find where my verso 05 drain out coolant from -25 and -30 weather! Coolant smell to cabin but not anymore? New coolant and wind to leakpoint?
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor thanks Peter 👍. I think cylinder head casket is so bad! Where you live Peter?
Jotain taisin tehdä väärin, kun en millään saa lämppäriä puhaltamaan lämmintä. Tosin vasta tästä videostasi näin, että moottorin takanakin on pultti jonka kautta olisi pitänyt laskea nesteet pois. Täytynee vissiin tyhjentää uudelleen järjestelmä ja täyttää uudelleen.
Cool thnx
it's the perfect video for everyone who has a corolla! But I want to ask you! Do you know how many litres of coolant antifreezee does 4zz need?
I thought you are supposed to max the heat and No fan on when running the engine 'til thermostat open, but you set it low. Besides, to bleed the air out engine needs to be ran until thermostat open and be sure there is no bubble . I did not see you check that!
Did you let the antifreeze go into the ground???
edward givens No. Always to canister and then to recycle center.
+edward givens i always give my old antifreeze to the neighbors dog.
you did not flush the radiator with water or flushing liquid before putting the new coolant
A suggestion for the next video: use your own container instead of the soil to pour the old liquid...
When re-filling coolant, it is best to leave the engine block plug open until coolant starts to leak out and then close it. This allows trapped air to escape engine block. Toyota recommend filling from highest point which is heater hose at rear next to firewall, again to prevent air pockets in engine cooling system. Air pockets are the big danger when doing a full coolant flush hence the reason for the bleed bolt on the block itself. Other than that a very good clip. regards Frank.
i was told thea this engine had no block plun now i see why i had so mutch problens tith my avensis
In my car this haed bullet dont have
Yes, cool.
Don't agree with you. The rear hose is very difficult to remove. Easier to take out the thermostate and flush from there. Use the proper antifreeze without silicates.
don't ever use water in your system. This guy doesn't know what he's doing.
Water absorbs heat better than coolant so that’s why he said he runs just water in the summer. Should be distilled water at least so mineral deposits don’t build up in the cooling system.
Distilled water is correct !!! Just like your grandmother used in her iron and for all the same reasons. A 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water .
Sometimes I watch this just to calm down. One of my favorite youtube videos ever.
Hi and Thanks for comment. :-)
Yes it’s balm for your soul. I like the sudden movie ending!
