Found this video and its like a gem, was looking for a good science fiction that did characters right, and the concept of switching from different characters pov never gets old to me, especially when the author know how to get the most out of the different perceptions everyone has of the world around them. never heard of you or Glen Cook but now im checking out black company, I love mercenary stories !!!
I'm glad you found the video! The Black Company series is Glen Cook's best work but his SF stuff is right behind it. The Black Company series basically invented the Grimdark genre. I hope you enjoy his works!
Another great video, satisfying to see someone else who appreciates Cook's SF work! By the way, you didnt mention Jerry Pournelle's Falkenberg series when you were talking about great Military SF. I just wanted to point his series out if you hadn't stumbled across it. Great read!
One of those authors like Stephen R. Donaldson that is much better known for his fantasy than his sci-fi. I’ve only read the. First 6 Black Company so far but tend to buy any Cool book I find.
What a good video (your tier ranking led me here). Haven't read GC yet. A couple other titles I've heard good things about: The Dragon Never Sleeps and The Tower of Fear. Read those yet by any chance? If so, a penny for your thoughts.
I DNF'd both of those books. They just don't read like Glen Cook novels. I already responded to your other comment but my recommendation for a starting point for Glen Cook is either Passage at Arms or The Black Company.
@@JosephReadsBooks Thanks again. I always admire a reviewer willing to break ranks of status quo opinion. I felt similarly to you, for example, about Martian Chronicles. I remember one really good story amidst of sea of 'ok-ish'.
Oh baby, you haven’t read The Dragon Never Sleeps yet! Just as a thing to consider with how many books Glen wrote: he says that he’d written a lot of this stuff in the seventies and early eighties. So he got a ton of books published around the same time, but much of it had been written earlier. Still incredibly productive, but not all at once.
@@JosephReadsBooks nice. I think Instrumentalities and Dragon Never Sleeps are masterpieces, but they both really throw you into the deep end. For Instrumentalities, it helps to understand that the world Glen is presenting is basically the 12th century Mediterranean world with different names and gods are real. I also quite like A Matter of Time, but it’s kind of an odd little read.
Sung in Blood is a super short book. The other 4 were on audio but I can't listen at 2x speed. It sounds like gibberish 😂. I spent about 40 hours listening to audiobooks in that week.
Timely. A coworker just today gave me the first three books in the Black Company series! Great overview Joseph!
I think you will really like The Black Company.
@@JosephReadsBooks I walked out today at the end of my shift and left the freaking thing in my locker....ugh. I'll get it in a couple days.
This Starfishers series sounds like such a hidden gem - thanks for putting it on my radar! Unfortunately I only see his fantasy in used bookstores
I ended up buying all my Glen Cook SF novels online. Fortunately the Nightshade Books trade paperbacks are pretty nice(and cheap).
@@JosephReadsBooks that's good at least!

I have never heard of that series. I will add it to my list. Thanks!
I'm sold, looking for the Starfishers Trilogy now. Thanks Joseph.
I'm glad my proselytizing is working! 😂
Awesome. Given all of this, ending with The Dragon Never Sleeps will be like ending with as big a bang as you can hope for.
I'm really looking forward to it!
(I'm pretty sure I will be reading it in late November/Early December)

Donaldson is one of those writers I need to finally read. I own a bunch of his books.
I have heard good things about his SF stuff.

Passage at Arms is, indeed, quite excellent. Hopefully you've read The Dragon Never Sleeps by now too, which is also great.
I am reading The Dragon Never Sleeps next month. I'm really looking forward to it!

I'm so excited about The Dragon Never Sleeps!
Thanks for the info!
@@JosephReadsBooks what do you have left of Glen’s work? I can’t remember, have you read any of Instrumentalities yet?
@@donaldpratt2296 I have 4 Garrett novels, the 4 Instrumentalities books, The Dragon Never Sleeps, and A Matter of Time.
