Hi Julie...I took the remark, "they own them," as tongue in cheek since the turtles wouldn't survive long without being in the sea...At least I hope the comment wasn't meant literally...
She (the person in the video) was talking about primitive people. The primitive people could turn it around and say it's been a tradition for hundreds of years. Who are you to tell them they are wrong. I'd agree with you. Personally I don't agree with doing tradition for just traditional sake. I need good evidence for why I do things. That's why I don't celebrate most holidays. Skepticism isn't a thing for many people.
Given how split the comment section is, I did a little research and it appears that the stealing of sea turtle eggs is a serious problem from where this person lives. The eggs are sold illegally as exotic pets or worse eaten. The people here were planning to ‘own’ the turtle so that they could protect her eggs but the poacher beat them to it. And yes, they could have taken them back to the beach, but that would have only allowed some other poacher the opportunity to come along and steal them again. They don’t have the protective measures in their community that others have to guard the nests so what they did here with the bucket of sand was the best plan they could come up with to save the babies rather than leave them at risk of being stolen, sold and or eaten. (This is all from what I’ve seen and read, so I could be wrong about some details. If anyone finds any further info on what’s happening in this place involving egg poachers let me know. Save the turtles)
@@TheBooban No that is not a good plan at all because that might result in a criminal case against yourself. You can't play for judge, jury, and executioner yourself, never !! I Know right? I may be mistaken. But I dont believe the mother returns to, or sits on her eggs once she lays them. She hides them by instinct and moves on. Also, if there is no one to protect them when they hatch and start running for the water,...the seagulls can get them. I’ve seen a bunch of turtle hatchings and there is usually a whole group of people(from a turtle rescue/ volunteers) who watch for turtles laying eggs. They make a barrier around the nest, so nobody disturbs it. When it’s around the time for the turtles to hatch, they watch the nests the entire night. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kindness and joy!,,,,!,,
I got to watch baby sea turtles hatch one labor day weekend it was awesome
Saves over a hundred turtles, “cool we got to save *a few*”
She had to buy the eggs so getting a hundred would be pretty expensive
