      She (the person in the video) was talking about primitive people. The primitive people could turn it around and say it's been a tradition for hundreds of years. Who are you to tell them they are wrong. I'd agree with you. Personally I don't agree with doing tradition for just traditional sake. I need good evidence for why I do things. That's why I don't celebrate most holidays. Skepticism isn't a thing for many people.

    Given how split the comment section is, I did a little research and it appears that the stealing of sea turtle eggs is a serious problem from where this person lives. The eggs are sold illegally as exotic pets or worse eaten.
    The people here were planning to ‘own’ the turtle so that they could protect her eggs but the poacher beat them to it. And yes, they could have taken them back to the beach, but that would have only allowed some other poacher the opportunity to come along and steal them again.
    They don’t have the protective measures in their community that others have to guard the nests so what they did here with the bucket of sand was the best plan they could come up with to save the babies rather than leave them at risk of being stolen, sold and or eaten.
    (This is all from what I’ve seen and read, so I could be wrong about some details. If anyone finds any further info on what’s happening in this place involving egg poachers let me know. Save the turtles)

    • @TheBooban

      The best plan would be to beat up the poachers.

    • @insAneTunA
      @insAneTunA 3 роки тому +53

      @@TheBooban No that is not a good plan at all because that might result in a criminal case against yourself. You can't play for judge, jury, and executioner yourself, never !! The best thing to do is to expose the criminals and to create awareness for the problem and to seek help with the government over and over again until they understand the problem and do something about it.
      Saving the turtles the proper way could be a tourist attraction. And it could mean something good for both the turtles and the local people at the same time.

    How is there so many people annoyed with the person who filmed this?
    This is Nicaragua where there's unlikely to be any legal protection against poaching.
    The person filming is not the one who disturbed the nest.
    The person filming bought the eggs to save them and it would have been too dangerous to return them.

      I Know right? I may be mistaken. But I dont believe the mother returns to, or sits on her eggs once she lays them. She hides them by instinct and moves on. Also, if there is no one to protect them when they hatch and start running for the water,...the seagulls can get them. Often when Tuttle eggs hatch and the babies head for the water, out of like 60 eggs or whatever..only like 6 or 7 will make. Because the seagulls get the rest, before they get there. 😕. These peeps didnt just save the turtles from the poachers.

    I’ve seen a bunch of turtle hatchings and there is usually a whole group of people(from a turtle rescue/ volunteers) who watch for turtles laying eggs. They make a barrier around the nest, so nobody disturbs it. When it’s around the time for the turtles to hatch, they watch the nests the entire night. When they hatch, they go through a canal that has been built in the sand to protect them from predators. I’ve had them run over my feet while going to the ocean. It’s really cool to experience.

      Medieval times? Dude they grind male baby chicks alive in the egg industry because they're of no use. Millions -- millions -- a year. That's 100% barbaric and taking place in all the "advanced" countries. Talk about medieval.
      Edit: my bad. I just double-checked and the estimate is actually 7 _billion_ with a b.

    The video doesn't make it clear enough that the eggs were being taken and sold by poachers. As a heads up to people watching this, the video takes place in Nicaragua where the protection of sea turtles isn't the highest priority. Thus the person/people in the video had to buy the eggs from the poacher to prevent the eggs being sold.
