    "Sooner or Later" is a song recorded by the American singer Madonna from her soundtrack album I'm Breathless. Written by American composer Stephen Sondheim and produced by Madonna and Bill Bottrell, the song was used in the parent film, Dick Tracy. "Sooner or Later" was composed to evoke the theatrical nature and style of the film. A 1930s-style jazz ballad with piano, drum, double bass, and horns, the track conjures up the atmosphere of a smoky nightclub. Madonna sings in her lowest register accompanied by a variable pitch.
    Critical response to the track was positive, with reviewers deeming it as an important addition to Madonna's music catalog. At the 63rd Academy Awards held on March 25, 1991, the song won an Oscar for Best Original Song, awarded to Sondheim. Madonna attended the ceremony along with singer Michael Jackson as her date, and performed "Sooner or Later" onstage, being inspired by the look of actress Marilyn Monroe. Madonna also performed the song at her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour.

    Thanks! I've never seen this. I do think Madonna sounds a lot like Bernadette on 'I'm Breathless". Yeah, Bernadette has had an extensive career since the 60's in theatre, movies, and TV. There are a few times where she was on The Carol Burnette show and she was hilarious.

    I love Bernadette, she was one of the 1980s Broadway muses, and I think especially for Sondheim. I wish folks would have saved this reaction offering until after you did Blonde Ambition since this performance happened after the Blonde Ambition, but that's just me starting to think about choices I've made around introducing future peripherals to the journey before they were "of the time."

    Empress you're right similar tones. Bernadette did a good job. Madonna brought all the DRAMA with her Oscar performance and showed that she had some chops.

    Madonna's is untouchable! Here Bernadette is performing in the same way Madonna did it at the Blonde Ambition Tour a couple of years before. So Madonna did it first, indeed.

    She kilt it honestly. A bit more idiosyncratic (dictionary fish!) in the delivery, and gorgeous control and tone, but with M’s version I hear a little more rawness and ‘hunger’ which I think is really appropriate for the song. Here, Bernadette sounds almost aloof or not bothered, just chill and like, you’re going to want me. M is more stalkerish and needy… and that works for the song’s lyrical content. Both are great, but for different reasons.

      Totally agree with this! Bernadette is a STAR in her own realm, she killed it too.

    Omg! I’m so glad you reacted to this. Bernadette Peters is a Broadway legend. Nominated for countless Tony Awards and winner of two, she’s incredible. She can act, sing, and dance and she has not affected her voice too much. You have to watch her sing “Unexpected Song” either in concert or at the Tony Awards in the 80s. It’s one of her best ballads and it’s a song in a show she won her first Tony Award for, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song and Dance where the first half of the show is told through fully in song and it’s just her on stage in character talking about being a Brit moving to New York then falling in love and falling out of love while the second half is told entirely through dance where her ex-boyfriend takes over and dances with an entire dance company for the next half telling his story where he considers coming back to her. She was also the original Witch in Into the Woods on Broadway and she absolutely nailed that role. Meryl Streep played her in the movie version nearly 30 years later and was nominated for an Oscar for it, but nobody beats Bernadette in that role. Her best role is probably Marie in Sunday in the Park with George. If you really want to do a deep dive, you should hear her sing “Move On” from Sunday in the Park with George with Mandy Patinkin (remember him from I’m Breathless?). To see pure vocal trickery and her mastery of the craft of being a character through song the prologue of Into the Woods or the opening song of Sunday in the Park with George will blow you away with her sheer skill.

    ❤️‍🔥 Bernadette is a must know talent! So brilliant with incredible timing both in her jazzy musical delivery and her genius for comedy acting. A true Broadway legend, muse of Sondheim and an unashamed saucy minx who is still smokin’ hot to this day! A real firecracker 🧨 She’s also a big advocate and activist for animal rights, and you MUST check out some of her movie roles… Most iconically in the original film version of the musical Annie and the hilarious Steve Martin movie The Jerk.

    Glad you enjoyed Bernadette’s version! This is from 1996 or so, she did a concert that featured many Stephen Sondheim songs. She was in several of his shows over the years and was basically his muse. She’s legendary in the Broadway/theater world, very unique talent.

    Hi. Bernadette is one Broadway’s First Ladies. Please react to her performing “Not A Day Goes By” also by Stephen Sondheim. Bernadette’s husband was killed in a helicopter accident in 2005 and she performed the song a few years later at a Sondheim‘a 80th birthday concert. Thank you.

    I like Peters, but found it not only rude, that she didn’t mention Madonna by name and give her credit. I also find, when it comes to a song Madonna has sung, they cover it to try and prove they can do it better. Kelly Clarkson does it all the time on her talk show.

      Madonna gets some resentment from Broadway actors... Patti LuPone was really nasty about Madonna after "Evita".

      @@dtaylor939 - Agreed, so low class of Lupone for saying what she did, I believe she was so jealous Madonna got the movie and won a best actress Golden Globe for it.

    • @DanCrowleyNYC

      I hear that, but at least she didn't take any cheap shots at Madonna like the way so many Broadway talents would have done. Yes, she should have mentioned her name, but she kept it classy by not saying anything cutting. I still prefer M's version too.

    • @SDoesNotKnow
      @SDoesNotKnow 2 роки тому +3

      I actually think a lot of Broadway actors respect what Madonna does. Not many were openly hostile to her. Only Patti Lupone who called Madonna a “movie killer” but at least Madonna got leading film roles to kill movies. Lupone wishes she got such offers. I love Lupone but part of that love is realizing she’s also rude, bitter and entitled but you know, she knows her talent and worth so I cheer her on when she acts that way. Patti also has a one-sided rivalry with Bernadette for roles whereas Bernadette doesn’t pay Patti much attention. Women are seldom so courageously open about not getting what they think they deserve that it’s refreshing…to a point. I think Bernadette was just being cute with not mentioning Madonna by name because everyone in the audience knew who Madonna was as she was practically the most famous woman in the world at that point and she didn’t even need to be mentioned by name for the audience to know who she was talking about.
