I can’t agree more on the JLA book titles. They are so duplicative. Really, there aren’t any other words you can use for the book titles? But that’s my general gripe with Romantasy book titles. Most sound similar and use Court, Blood, Ash, Flesh, Fire, etc in the title.
Jade, Thorns, Shadow, Gold etc. yeah. I also could not bring myself to support JLA because she didn't use a different name on publishing her first book, even though her name differs by only one letter from that of an already established author - which then had a terrible effect on the other author's career. I don't know if JLA herself is to blame or if it's her agent etc but I think it was a thoroughly dishonourable choice tbh.,
'Why are we recycling words?' is such a mood though. I've read so many books where I see the same word used sometimes multiple times in one paragraph and it often feels so lazy to me. Sometimes it's a deliberate stylistic choice, but often it at the very least doesn't come across as such, and is more likely just bad writing and worse editing.
As someone who wrote off Holly Black I will say TCP is her best work, and much better than her previous fae books. Even in the future I doubt I'll find myself reading anything outside of this universe from her
Im enjoying the From Blood and Ash series so far but Im skipping the retelling from the dudes POV and companion novel, I'm happy its ending. I hope things dont change and the series doesnt extend.
Ha! This morning I was literally just thinking how much I love the cruel prince artwork but I absolutely hated that first book and refuse to read the best. On the flip side I did read the adult book she released and enjoyed it, it’s very much an urban fantasy, which I like
This made me realise how similar our book tastes are!!!😂 Read the first Emily Wilde & completely agree with you, I don’t need anymore of that world although I enjoyed it. Read books 1-3 in Wayward children series and my enjoyment has went downhill with each one! Read FBAA and had a good enough time with it, DNFd book 2 & have no interest in the rest of her work🥴 Emily Henry is also super hit or miss for me, I enjoyed Beach Read but DNFd People we meet on vacation. I have just bought Silver under Nightfall but judging how similar our tastes are I’m not going to love it either, hopefully it’s the outlier😅 I really loved this video idea, please do these every year! 🤭
Blood and ash could have been 3 books, maybe 4. But as I read them as library books and also in my own language (which I think the translator improved on the writing) I do want to read the last book. Maybe I'll wait until it is translated tho :)
I agree on holly black i have tried multiple times to read her books and i can't get into them, i need more world building and more fantastical writing as well and would take a 1000 page book over a novella as i read the first two wayward children books and I just didn't like that they would end as soon as they would get good, too quick and i tried her other book as well and just not for me! I have read all of emily henry except for happy place so far and i have loved beach read and have not liked people we meet on vacation or book lovers so i am skeptical when it comes to her books!
Reading Map of the Otherlands now and I might like it better than the first one so far. I get why the series is not for everyone though Oh JLA. I liked the B&A series but it’s getting long in the tooth and should probably have been wrapped up by now. The Flesh and Fire series does feel like retreading but I do enjoy some of the elements of that series more but it is also getting old too.
I do agree on the Holly Black here - I decided to get into the hype and picked up the trilogy. Book 1 - The Cruel prince was such a disappointment in terms of plot and world building. Sooo many questions. I’m now in the middle of book 2 and it’s better as there is just more action. But given your experience with fantasy I think it’s a safe bet to not read it. I’ll also just finish off the trilogy and for sure will not pick up any of the other books set in the world
I honestly can’t think of one that I won’t be picking up right now. I didn’t really vibe with Happy Place by Emily Henry…but I’m willing to give her another shot. 🥰🥰🥰
100% on Emily Wildes but then again I didn’t enjoy book 1 so… I haven’t read People we meet on Vacation but I did love Booklovers and I loved it and I generally don’t like rom coms
Totally agree with you about the Blood and Ash series, there are lots of repeating and I lost my interest in book 3. I think it didn’t have to be as long as it has been.
I understand mostly everything on this list because I am not interetes in the series, but when you said you would not read Court of Wanderers, my jaw dropped 😂😂😂
I try to avoid hyped books, so the only ones I guess I'd be avoiding is the JLA book, and the Emily Wilde book. I DNF'd my reread of the Covenant Series because teen fantasy romance isn't my thing anymore, so I doubt adult fantasy will be my thing at the moment. And the Emily Wilde sequel probably isn't my thing based on that. I also think I read the first book at the wrong time, and whilst I gave it 4 stars, I didn't exactly have any enthusiam to continue on with the series.
My first Emily Henry book was People We Meet on Vacation and I didn’t like it. I decided to give her a second chance, so I read Book Lovers and it became a favorite. Now I love her books except PWMOV. Red String Theory by Lauren Kung Jessen already released but I didn’t like her writing or characters enough to read another book by her.
I think the only real surprise of this list for me is the Emily Henry release. I definitely agree with you on not really having interest in most of these.
I’m also not continuing the From Blood and Ash series 😅 I read the first 3 books and the first book in the prequel series and I find JLA’s writing style really undignified for fantasy 🙃 Plus yeah, the story was getting stupid…
Re: Emily Henry. I previously read People We Meet On Vacation and also found it to be very mediocre. Now I'm reading Book Lovers and it is so much better. People [...] also has a much lower average rating on GR compared to her other novels, so I guess that just wasn't the best starting point. Re: Holly Black. Book Of Night was such a disappointment to be honest. Concept was good, but it was a bore from cover to cover. It's just trying to be something that it is clearly not. A bit how I felt about Book Eaters last year. Re: Wayward Children. Yes, the second one remains the best, along with its direct sequel, book four of five, can't remember. The rest were okay, but the last few have been boring and don't add anything. At this point, this series feels like lazy writing and a cash-grab, cause nothing is fleshed out and for a novella they are really expensive.
I'm almost finished reading the 3rd book in the Cruel Prince series and I will not be recommending it. Honestly it's quite a boring series in comparison to other fantasy romance. I know it's YA but I also expected something more than what I got lol
You should try to read the cruel prince series it’s so good and fast paced. It’s super easy to get into. It’s really only good if you like reading about fae or romance though. If you don’t like those things you wouldn’t like this. You should at least try it. It’s an amazing series. Much better than the other things by her I have read.
I loved blood and ash but i really really *really* didn't like book 2 and your review of book 3 made me not want to continue it because it sounded like the things i didn't like in book 2 were even more prevalent in 3 so i just stopped
Cassandra Clare is definitely an author I will not continue reading any of her work and that reallly makes me so sad but her peak was the infernal devices and the mortal instruments series after those two series she just can’t write good villains anymore I hated her dark artifices trilogy and her adult novel sword catcher from what I’ve heard from her in interviews talking about sword catcher it seems heavily historical high fantasy and I just don’t care for it
I love Cassandra Clare but Sword Catcher was SO boring. Literally nothing happened until the last 20 pages. I definitely won't be reading anymore of that series and I'm gutted I spent £22 on a special edition of SC!

Stars, Sea, King, etc. It's getting to the point now where it's putting me off books, especially when covers are looking so samey too
Jade, Thorns, Shadow, Gold etc. yeah. I also could not bring myself to support JLA because she didn't use a different name on publishing her first book, even though her name differs by only one letter from that of an already established author - which then had a terrible effect on the other author's career. I won't be reading anything by James Patterson, Jennifer L Armentrout, or Nicholas Sparks.

been SO excited for this
What turns me away from the Seanan McGuire books is why the eff are we charged $20+ for a NOVELLA! Wild to me.
Im enjoying the From Blood and Ash series so far but Im skipping the retelling from the dudes POV and companion novel, I'm happy its ending. I hope things dont change and the series doesnt extend.

too many good books out there to pick up ones we don't expect to love!

I've heard multiple times that you either love Beach Read & Book Lovers OR People we meet on Vacation & Happy Place
I gave up on From Blood and Ash after being disappointed with a thing that was hinted at happened... sort of... so much disappoint...😐
never say never but I don’t think I’ll pick up sangu mandanna’s new book or any of ali hazelwood’s new releases
I still haven’t even started the wayward children series 🙃
I think the only real surprise of this list for me is the Emily Henry release. I definitely agree with you on not really having interest in most of these.

The Hinterlands?
It just came out, but, I've got almost 0 interest in ready any of the crescent city books.

I don’t want to but thanks for the suggestion

Realm breaker was so disappointing for me too. I was so excited but something about the writing just dragged and made it boring
I'm just hanging on for Sorasa and Dom. Would have LOVED for Sorasa to be the MFC. The "lead" is about as basic and cookie cutter as it gets.

Wait, where is the section of Goodreads that gives you new releases?
It’s under the browse dropdown ☺️

Bride by Ali hazel wood. Didn’t like any of her previous work that I read
Hi im making a film based on the Magus, can you read my script and review it?
I have no interest in Ali Hazelwood or Colleen Hoover books, I don't care about Alice Oseman too.
