My first impression upon seeing those episodes: Why would any kid see an adult who looked like that and not instinctively run in the opposite direction?! The schools in that city were NOT doing their job about warning kids about strangers with candy.
He drove an ice cream truck by trade. His victims (and especially their parents) probably assumed that whatever company had hired him would have some system of background checks to vet creeps who just want the job as an excuse to be near children. It's remarkable the amount of potentially dangerous people parents will trust their children with, because they've been socially conditioned to see that person as child-friendly or "safe". Priests are one that immediately comes to mind, but even family members and neighbors and the like. Statistically, a child is more likely to be abused by someone they know and trust, someone they've been raised to trust (sometimes even their own parents), which is harder to spot when everyone is instead looking out for some hypothetical leering stranger passing out lollipops on a playground in broad daylight.
Sad truth is there are still dozens of child abductions even today despite proper schooling. Education more often than not doesn't take into consideration the psychological elements of an adult telling a child what to do and where to go.
I dont know man, when i was a young kid in the early 90s, i was told several times by my Grandma to never go with Strangers, never take Candy from Strangers, or get into Cars from Strangers.
You shouldn't use the word monsters like that. It just makes it seem like he's not human. You need to accept and understand the existence of such a person, not deny their humanity. Billy is just a human.
@@Merilirem Just a human? Forgive me if I sound rude but you're making him seem innocent and as if it's not his fault that he murders children. Of course biologically he is human, but spiritually and in my code of honor, he is not human.
Spawn's a dark, tortured hero. Makes sense his villains would be depraved and evil, the kind that comes from the darkest depths. Comics lack something with villains now that spawn had in spades!
Two things, mainly. First, nowadays every villain just HAS to be relatable. They can't be irredeemably evil without being somewhat understandable or having an equivocal enough tragedy to their side of the story. They can't just be what a lot of them should be and, in real life, are; monsters. Ones that weren't made through tragedy or bad luck. Just monsters that have naturally bad souls. Second, people are afraid now to make villains do...ANYTHING. People are so damn sensitive. Sure, there are some...subjects...that were explored with villains like this that, yeah, shouldn't be abused, but there are so many areas nowadays people are too scared to tread when making villains FEEL evil and to how much of a degree. "Oh, they kill people, but they leave children alone" yeah, because them not killing children TOTALLY (I say this sarcastically) makes sense if they already massacre people en masse, sometimes maybe even with children involved, just killing them indirectly anyway. Not like that makes their threat not feel like a threat when those specific loopholes are involved. Like, gimme a break, a villain and a mass murderer are a villain and a mass murderer, you want me to take them seriously, show me there is no limit to their villainy and give me the reason why there is no limit beyond the basic explanation of "the plot demands it".
@@therefinedhellion5041 This is a serious problem when they try to redeem every villain but yet demonise the hero. Rooting for the Empire. Rooting for the villains despite having massacred countless lives and ruined several more.
Honestly what makes Kincaid so horrible isn’t the fact that he’s some over the top comic book villain but that he’s something that we can find out in the real world
Most comic book villians are likeable to some extent. There's nothing likeable about Billy. In a world with literal demons from hell. The scariest villian is a human. That's an achievement.
The villain everyone hates not because of his character or anything, but because he's kind of people are real and are among us. I felt extreme pleasure everytime he suffered
My first ever exposure to this character was back when I was still in middle school. It was during gym class and I either found or someone let me borrow a spawn comic book. The comic was all about Billy and what he did as an ice cream man. I remember being left shocked and traumatized by what I read, which was saying something because I already knew a little about Spawn ahead of time and going in I expected to see over the top gore and scary looking demons, but instead I witness something much much darker. Just seeing this man commit these atrocious acts on children genuinely disturbed me. I was so disgusted by what I was reading and seeing, but I also couldn't look away from it. Even when he was finally killed off I didn't feel satisfied, I was still struggling to settle the amount of shock I had at the beginning. Billy left an impression on me at a really early age and was the first character to make me realize that humans can be scarier than monsters.
Only criticism I might note, making him physically grotesque makes it "easy" to villainize. Sadly in reality, objectively average to attractive people are doubted or idolized for doing stuff close to this. Its grosser to think a character like this might majority be ostracized for his physicality. Make them a little less gross looking and people get shocked someone like him is capable, put 5 years on the child and suddenly people want more debate. A generally agreed to be attractive person that murders will get a fan base.
I agree look at Griffith from the beserk series. Because he’s good looking there’s debates and memes on if his atrocities that he committed were actually wrong. If Griffith looked liked billy here I doubt there will be a lot of discourse.
@@moonrocked I've seen good debates. Like well made. You're so right. Still a character that makes me queasy. A series that stirs up a lot of uncomfortable feelings because it was, probably is, the most graphic anime I've seen. Plus I originally saw it in German with subtitles and the last episode had no subs, so I was just confused and horrified. 😂
That's probably why Kira Yoshikage is so popular in the JoJo fandom: he doesn't even present himself as villanous, but just an everyman living a relatively quiet life. Only problem was that he also happened to be a serial killer with a mutilation fetish that got nurtured by his parents so yeah.
True, but the overt visible disgust in a person makes the them think not only of the person but the actions they preformed far worse than may have done. Most people see someone like him and automatically think he’s disgusting and filthy . Making him more normal adds to shock but I don’t think billy needs anything shocking to understand what he is. It’s a valid point to make people understand it’s very realistic and even a normal next door neighbor can be someone who does this , but I’d think that would take away from the look and add normalcy which would make billy less interesting. The fact he’s already disgusting makes other judgmental which is how most writers can start controlling their readers emotions and leave every page, action or grainy cliffhanger feel uneasy or sadistic. Feeling something without that knowledge of right or wrong leaves worse to behold. Which is the point; these actions aren’t normal , they are disgusting regardless of the face they have they will be easy to villainize. So a normal person adds shock but doesn’t reveal any new avenues just questions. Most grotesque things that do these actions stick in heads and leave far us to create far more sadistic thoughts than we need. What was the metamorphosis of this individual to look and act a way? What was his life like? ( it’s far easier to dive into something disgusting and vile on paper than something so plan it’s unrealistic.) A great example is ultimate blob X-men when he ate wasp and the entire picture of him doing so will stick in minds . Some people have this illusion comic book readers wants to be coddled and not have the real world integrated into the world, but for the past 20 years things like this Kite man Punisher and daredevil Deadpool killiustrated etc have been showing up. The unknown is feared. The unknown normalcy is scary The blatant truth is harsh. The unknown expected truth is horrifying We will be more scared of something we expect and assume than something we don’t expect because then everything we think about or have in the back of our heads come out; we become hyper aware of time, light , our surroundings, body functions of fear , people around us because we expect something terrible and create worse versions in our mind . Billy’s design is exactly that the expected reality we are just waiting for the truth these no hero In spawn; any one can be villainized it’s what we have to see that makes it worse. And knowing or expecting someone like billy to do those things are vile and perfect for the series.

@@Elmithian To question your final sentence. What if the entire story is meant to be realistic? Simply a story made up by an author, that tells something captivating.
@@ethanworks9917 Then it is completely fine as the audience is given no illusion that the story is going to not contain dark subject material. Can still suck if not done well ofc, moreso even because it is focused purely on the realistic stuff so people have easier time spotting incongruity in them.

The comic version of John Wayne Gasey.
My first impression upon seeing those episodes: Why would any kid see an adult who looked like that and not instinctively run in the opposite direction?! The schools in that city were NOT doing their job about warning kids about strangers with candy.
I mean he was giving ice cream tho
ua-cam.com/users/shortsNLDhSmlrxk0?feature=share
Judging people by looks huh?
You tell your kids that they're no such things as monsters but knowing they're are people out there like Billy Kincaid it's like you're lying to them.
I dont know man, when i was a young kid in the early 90s, i was told several times by my Grandma to never go with Strangers, never take Candy from Strangers, or get into Cars from Strangers.
@@DieHardjagged That’s what I mean. The real monsters that I’m talking about are just like Kincaid. The kind that walk around in human form.
If I ever have kids, I’d warn them that there are monsters, but sometimes are born human and act human.
All modern villains do now is wear red hats and tell woman to smile more, truly the greatest horror we face today
Spawn is not a hero
He's similar to Guts
The 80s run of animal man has something just as fucked up.

Very true.
It’s a valid point to make people understand it’s very realistic and even a normal next door neighbor can be someone who does this ,
but I’d think that would take away from the look and add normalcy which would make billy less interesting.
( it’s far easier to dive into something disgusting and vile on paper than something so plan it’s unrealistic.)
A great example is ultimate blob X-men when he ate wasp and the entire picture of him doing so will stick in minds .
Some people have this illusion comic book readers wants to be coddled and not have the real world integrated into the world, but for the past 20 years things like this
Kite man
Punisher and daredevil
Deadpool killiustrated etc have been showing up.
The unknown is feared.
The unknown normalcy is scary
The blatant truth is harsh.
The unknown expected truth is horrifying
We will be more scared of something we expect and assume than something we don’t expect because then everything we think about or have in the back of our heads come out; we become hyper aware of time, light , our surroundings, body functions of fear , people around us because we expect something terrible and create worse versions in our mind . Billy’s design is exactly that the expected reality we are just waiting for the truth these no hero In spawn; any one can be villainized it’s what we have to see that makes it worse.
And knowing or expecting someone like billy to do those things are vile and perfect for the series.

@@gravekeepersven82 don’t even get me going, omg, seriously you wanna talk about people that think they’re gods, they’re Freemasons I’m a mason and a knights Templar, absolute jokes, they’ve been in a lot longer than me. I’ll leave it at that
Not respected at all, because of their big mouths and egos
Billy was the creeeeepiest of villians! And the long nails definitely worked towards his creeper personality. Lol. I hated it.
Billy Kincaid is one of the best villains in comic books. Any villain that is this hated is a great character. Villains need their own comic books.
Imagine what punisher would do to him?
Or the Secret Six.
So happy some Spawn characters are getting known 😩
Dear lord it's a reddit mod
Him & Ethan Roark, the Son of A Senator from Sin City comics, are brutal & unforgiving as characters.
I can bet there are hundreds of people worse than him in real world.
Not to mention the DC Universe.
He's still popping up in the modern age Spawn comics
We REALLY need somebody like Spawn irl.
