  • Swami Sarvapriyananda expands on John Wheeler's concept of "It from Bit" which symbolizes the idea that every item of the physical world has at bottom - an immaterial source and explanation.

    ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

      Motivated soul
Some Christian’s believe in a dual type world. Some Things appear physical, but all things are spiritual or of divine substance. So I think there’s some overlap for some Christian’s. But then ya got the kaballah which I’ve not read much about. It’s very possible others from Abrahamic religions are similar to India. India had the swastika same as ancient Israel and even Native American tribes in the U.S. There could be even more overlap between the Middle East and India and other parts of the world. It was around WW2 that the US government got Native American tribes to forsake and stop using the swastika. It’s a shame because sure hitler used it but entirely different cultures should abandon their past because of one guy that was evil.

Have been following you for 2 years now. Every evening I listen to one of your recordings before bedtime knowing it will "sink in" during the dream state. It-Bit-Chit is the most inspiring talk of all your other talks. It reached my understanding on a different level as did the succinct explanation of Chapter 9 of the Gita though you've covered it in many other video recordings. You have been a source of blessing and inspiration and your talks are a sacred balm on the appearances of the times we live in. Deepest gratitude.

The view in neuroscience is that consciousness as we know it is entirely generated by the brain and does not exist separately from or independent of the brain. Swamy Sraravpriyananda disproves that theory, this lecture is brilliant. What consciousness truly is has not been fully understood, but it is safe to say that it is not fully contained by the brain.

@@Sabyasachi_De You got quite misinformed here. Here Swamiji loosely said that uncaused caused everything just for the sake of comparision between Science and Vedanta. But he actually didn't mean to say that. In one of his videos he has said that pure-consciousness (Brahman) is the absolute from which the very universe "appears" to be real. Pure-consciousness is itself the existence or being-ness or is-ness. It's neither the cause nor the effect. It's neither the subject nor the object. It's just a "pure subject" with no object. It's a non-duality concept that cannot be put in language. Language fails to express it as language can only express dual experiences. So, what i finally want to say is that, with respect to jiva Atma, the whole universe (jagat) appears to exist under Maya the power of Brahman. This Maya gives false existence to everything a Jiva atma experiences. So, now the question automatically arises-- who causes Maya? The answer is the question itself is invalid since this question implies "what's the cause of cause" which further implies that we have already assumed that "cause" exists. So, Brahman and Maya are two non-dualistic concepts that cannot be put into language. They are undefinable. They can only be experienced through various spiritual practices. Language won't help us here.

Is it worth to say few words about Swami and this lecture? I think, yes. Swami must be invited Sweden's Academy of Sciences at Stockholm to deliver this lecture. It is sum and substance of all which is said, experienced and known since very beginning of this universe. It is blend of science, philosophy and darshan. If ever, Stockholm awakens to confer noble prize to rishis of upanishad or Ashtavakra or Dattatreya or Gaurpad or Shankaracharya or Vivekananda, it must be given to Swami Sarvapriyananda as token of love to all named just before. If there is no category under which he is to be honoured, it must surely be noble prize for peace. Nothing in this world is nobler, more satisfying, more soothing, more purifying than the awareness, knowledge of the Self. It is peace itself. It is one and only thing which is to be realized first. The. rest will take its course of its own.

Life is not a dream but "like" a dream. It also states that everything tangible and intangible, including you, me and everything around is Brahman(God), which is the only absolute truth. But to understand this one has to free oneself from the shackles of the mind that limits us and go beyond the mind to experience our existence as pure consciousness.
In fact where is the world to a person who is in deep sleep? It doesn't exist at all. The human sees the world with his eyes as images, A cockroach sees the world with objects 10 times magnified. So there is no such thing as absolute reality. It is all the illusion of the mind.
This creation/physical plane is exactly like a dream. In sleep, our limited consciousness creates a world of itself and we call it a dream.
Let's say, one dreams of a king punishing a murderer in a kingdom. Now if you observe, once a dream (creation) occurs, the consciousness seems to have become fragmented though remaining one which is why we usually associate ourselves with only one character in the dream (as in the king, murderer etc), despite the fact that everything in the dream is created within our "single" consciousness when we are at sleep. And the most amusing part about creation is everything seems so real in spite of its illusory nature. If one associates to play the king he experiences the anger while sentencing the murderer whereas if one associates with the murderer, he will feel the pain to be so real in spite of it all being illusory.
    Now onto basic questions:
    Who is the king?
It is our own consciousness that is projected as the King
    Who is the murderer?
It is the same single consciousness that projects as the murderer.
    What is the kingdom?
Again, It is the same consciousness which projects itself as the kingdom.
Now taking the same analogy onto a philosophical level, this physical plane is also like the dream created by one ever existing super-consciousness which we call God. Though being one, It projects itself into many. This is true meaning of God's omnipresence. Consciousness pervades everything that is created by it. As our limited consciousness is the director of the drama in the plane of a dream, Likewise the super-consciousness (God) is the director of the drama for the physical plane. This is the true meaning of God's omniscience. Sometimes, when we are aware that we are dreaming, events in the dream take a turn as per the will of our consciousness. This is called lucid dreaming which some/many might have experienced. Likewise, the super-consciousness is able to alter the turn of events in the physical plane in comparison to the similar process of lucid dreaming. This is the true meaning of God's omnipotence.
When the dream is created, each projection within it (i.e the King, murderer, people, kingdom, including the non-living things etc) begins to experience an individuality as "I exist" or "I am". With this conception of independence with multiple "I am"(s) or "I exist"(s), the whole world is perceived as real though it is illusory. In this way, even in the real world, we think of our selves to have some individuality forgetting our true nature of bliss which is actually the super-consciousness state of God.
Finally, when do we come to the conclusion that the dream is illusory?
Not until we wake up. When we are in the dream, everything seems immaculately real as the dream projects one consciousness as fragmented many! When we wake up, we no more associate ourselves with the fragmented portion of the dream (as in the king or murderer) rather we associate ourselves with the consciousness that created it. This is how we come to know that the dream is unreal. Likewise, to realize God or attain that state of being God, we have to consciously associate ourselves with that super consciousness which is the governing reality behind this projection of the world as a physical plane.

Our scientific observations show that universe or multiverse is infinite and eternal. If the universe always existed and continuously evolving, how can we say that universe is unreal as Vedantins claim? Sankhya says both Prakriti (Universe) and Purusha (Consciousness) are real and infinite. Doesn't Sankhya seem closer to scientific observations?

Reality exists because it is in its nature to exist. The nothing never existed and cannot exist because it is in its nature not to exist: that is, if it existed, it would be something and not nothing. Nothing exists only verbally, but not really: it is like a square ball or a triangle that does not have three angles. Therefore and necessarily - existence exists.

Swamiji, wonderful talk as usual! But I have a lingering doubt about your assertion that structure cannot exist without stuff. Mathematical structures do exist without stuff. A binary-tree for example is just structure with several provable properties, but is not a real tree with "stuff". And we can store structure in the form of computer programs and then even feed pure structures into say 3D printers, that can organise "stuff" according to structure.
If we argue that structure cannot exist without stuff, are we not contradicting the "it from bit" hypothesis? Hoping to receive a response about this doubt. Thank you.

Why do we need to ask the question ' why does the Universe exist ? ' Is it not enough to learn to live in harmony with it and go back to it when you run out of time ?

  • @vasukinagabhushan
    @vasukinagabhushan Рік тому

Universe is infinite and continuously evolving. Universe has existed before we are born and will be there after we die. Universe exists, even when we don't observe it. We live in this infinite eternal universe/multiverse for a short time and die. Denying the eternal universe as an illusion and claiming that self is eternal, while our life is temporary, might be a clever way to overcome the fear of death of our limited life.
*This could be a valid argument of Lokayata.

Dear Swami. I am devoted to Vedanta and Buddhis. Actually, I am a practising Buddhist. My concern is that groups, including yourselves are not aware of the 'march of 'tech'' in terms of how, potentially amoral it is. I have asked you via your website. Would you not consider boycotting UA-cam on account of its' 'Anti-free speech' stance as well as its involvement in terms of advertising immorality and 'data-breaches'. The buddha spoke clearly about Wrong Livelihood. It seems certain many tech companies are acting thus. Thus, is it not correct for you to choose to use more ethical platforms for promugating the wonderful and life-changing philosophy of Vedanta. Much kindness.

Maharaj, you gave good explanation, but your talk would better be called "it from chit", more elaboration on the "bit" part would have lent further credence i.e elaborating about the information or better quantum information which builds this universe, the original source of "heat" or manifest "prana" i.e. quantum thermodynamics. These information are the 50 "Varnas" of mahakali. These 50 original pieces of "information" (arising from Onkar when it is predominated by tamas guna) by different and ever-changing algorithm (permtations and combinations) give rise to the undulating waves of namarupa. All controlled to the utmost degree of precision by the principle of Mahakali. (In most mundane language, this can be called the sequential arrangement ( i.e. kalan = calculus ) of infinitesimal divisions of time.

I also agree this is a very fine, informative, and engaging topic and talk. I think Swami must have been in a very jovial mood to say, “I can take credit for that,” with reference to the title. It must be a light-hearted demonstration of ‘when in New York, do as New Yorkers do’ - or in other words, a fine display of some East Coast appropriating function. Then again, ‘taking credit’ for a term might be a more apt description than ‘coining’ a term, as humans appear to be more in the business of borrowing than creating ….. 😅
