I'm a child of going to malls when malls were busy, when malls were social gathering spots, I love your videos because they seem to honor those memories and also gives a look into a bygone era, keep up the good work!!

I left America during the GFC and have missed this decline. So I feel a bit like Rip Van Winkle, looking at all these videos with a bit of a "HUH? WTF? How could it have changed SO MUCH?" reaction. As someone who's always lived in small spaces (I'm one person... don't want to spend my time maintaining a large place), I depended on malls to provide "space" for me after work and on the weekends for about 15 years, in several states. Although I usually went by myself, I'd hang in food courts or in Tully's (preferred) or Starbucks coffee shops with new technical reading material or my laptop in the evenings until the mall closed. To this day, I find it difficult to work at home in the evenings where there's no mall and café noise (thank you, youtube busy café sounds videos, although none quite do the job as well as the real thing). The mall food court was effectively my more wholesome version of the Cheers bar, where I'd see and get to know people with all sorts of different backgrounds. I'd get to know the security staff, the other regulars, some of the senior citizen aged mall walkers, and young café/food court staff. When one of the customer service ladies had a stroke, I visited her in hospital several times. I'd chat with the homeless guy who was welcome in Starbucks, and hung out there a lot because regulars would buy him sandwiches and the store would give him leftovers at the end of the night. I'd trust him to guard my laptop when I made quick runs to the ladies room, and would order "a mocha for Jeff" (which staff knew how to make, according to his preferences) most days. The idea of a mall as a social center was reinforced to me when I'd lost my job during the GFC and could no longer cost-justify my usual pastry snack with my tea, and that homeless guy came over to me one day with my favourite one on a plate, asking, "This is the one you like, isn't it? Here." (LOL, now I'm crying!)
I moved to a place (Australia) that doesn't have the same culture, as it doesn't even have shopping after 5 or 6 at night except on Thursday nights (!), and its food courts are really cramped due to the high price of real estate in Australia's most major cities and completely lack that open, spacious, suburban feel of classic US malls. There isn't even much seating, let alone any concept of a center court with fountains as (IMHO) any respectable mall SHOULD have. :-) The facility that serves this social purpose in Australia is the local pub, aka your "local" (most people have one), where instead of looking at shops and people-watching, you listen to music and people-watch. Being able to enjoy my usual mall-centred social life again is one thing I'd looked forward to going back to, one day. That it's … ALL CHANGED... is something that I have difficulty wrapping my brain around. Again, I feel like Rip Van Winkle. Because when I disappeared, that culture still existed. And now, it seems more like Australia, such that a mall is a place for those who plan to buy, to go. And not a place to just look around and hang out. don't even understand WHY people fell out of love with "hanging at the mall".

The area with the neon signs and accumulation of signage / items used to be a Swatch store in the late 90s-early 2000s.
I remember going there as a child and my parents purchased a watch for me to help me learn how to tell time. I distinctly remember the neon stars.

Hi Sal. I live a few minutes away from the Source Mall, and I think I can answer some of your questions.
As of right now, Lesso Home is not open. It was not open to the public prior to the pandemic. I got to go inside the mall around August of last year. None of the mall has been demolished. On the inside, things looked similar to how they do in this video: empty storefronts with the exception of Dave & Busters, Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang's, and a few others. The convenience store kiosk featured in your video is no longer open. Neither is the jewelry store. It is just as derelict as in your video; same chipped paint and rusted steel beams. Most of the time, there is just one security car patrolling the parking lots. The parking lots are currently being used to keep new cars for local dealerships.
If you like, I have some 35mm photos that I took of the inside of the mall. They're a little blurry though.
Fun fact: On a clear day, from the top of the parking garage, you could see as far as the Manhattan skyline.

I live in that area and even though the Source was a cool place, especially in its early days, it could never compete with Roosevelt Field just down the street. It was a bad decision to have built it in the first place, and now it's just a giant building taking up space.

Exactly right. I never understood why they built it there. Fortunoff was a great store in its day though. The family that owned it were very good to the employees. My parents bought some things there in the 80’s that they still have and are still functional. One was a pressure cooker.

As a Long Islander or someone from Nassau County at least, we always called it The Source Mall. It was literally a few block drive from Roosevelt Field which I think is what hurt it some, because Roosevelt Field was always the more popular. But The Source sometimes had better quality sneakers and clothing stores to those of us from the hood or “urban”. Like the source had a store which sold a bunch of Mitchell & Ness throwback basketball and football jerseys, Roosevelt didn’t have that. And you’d only get that type of shit from the city or Jamaica Ave in Queens. But for the most part the Source was always empty lol .

Hi Sal, the store with the watch images was just a watch store. Fortunoff sold watches, which is why that store was kind of odd and felt more like filler for that weird, angled out area. But from what I remember, that store seemed to carry more sportier, trendier watches than the main Fortunoff store. When stores were closing down, they just converted it to storage. I believe it was something else before being a watch store, but not 100% sure.
As an aside, the lower level entrance to Fortunoff wasn't as grand or as used as much as the upper level. The entrances were just openings to the department store, nothing fancy. It was almost like stumbling into a store halfway, they had merch right up to the openings with a clear path meandering thru leading you deeper into the store. It wasn't messy, just meh.
Also, the layout of the mall itself was kind of annoying. If you wanted to get to a certain store on the lower level, you had to go down the right escalators. You couldn’t just go to any one, because the lower level wasn't all connected. In fact, some had said that was part of the mall’s downfall! The mall wasn't as easy to navigate as Roosevelt Field mall, despite it being much smaller.
One thing important to mention is the Fortunoff Christmas store. Every Nov & Dec, they transformed the entire basement for the holiday season. As you came down the escalator, an impressive animatronic Scrooge with Tiny Tim would silently greet you. Trains traveled along tracks suspended from the ceiling. They had a huge display of the not-so-miniature NYC buildings and a Ferris wheel. It always felt overpacked with decorations but it was masterfully done. It was really amazing. They did this, long before the Source mall was built - My mom bought decorations from them back in ‘69.
They've since used the still-open Backyard store for their Christmas store but it's not the same. It's not in the basement, so you don't get that total immersion feeling, due to the light coming thru the windows and the summer patio furniture within sight. Seems like they may have sold all the cool stuff, would love to see if any of it is still tucked away in the basement. :)

Looking forward to it! I live about 20 minutes away. Fortunoff (closed years ago) was a very popular store here on Long Island (huge reputable jewelry section), The Source mall was built next to it and included a Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Changs which are still there, it's anchor Circuit City is long gone. A few months ago I was at the Broadway Mall (10 minutes from the Source), one of the proprietors of a store in the food court said that the owners of The Source mall are wealthy Chinese folks that plan to keep it open and don't care about revenue. 20 years ago (OMG) I attended Nassau Community College (down the street) from the mall and used to walk around it with my GF. BTW, the fellow at the Broadway Mall food court has only been there for 18 months and said that it's quickly becoming a "dead mall", indicated his location (part of a chain), doesn't even break even. Their anchor store (Macy's), was liquidating when I visited. They do still have a very popular Target.

My hometown was blessed with a good downtown that we'd go to locally, with a nearby A&S and a TSS (man I miss that place), plus a large strip mall anchored by a Woolworth's - between that, the Fotomat, and the best pizzeria in town, we'd have a grand afternoon of it. But special occasions meant heading to the mall, and stopping at Friendly's afterward.

Things looked pretty much the same as in your video. I was thrilled today to see that you actually did record in there. Again great work as usual. Cool to learn all these details of the local history I never knew about.
Simon malls is big on LI, they did a huge overhaul of the Walt Whitman mall in Huntington station years ago and that mall is thriving today. (They even have a Tesla storefront inside.)
Thanks for doing what you do Sal.

Only true scumbags would evict little puppies. It was great to see and hear Orson again. If Doug, the one man killing crew could swim across the ocean, he lives at the end. Fortunoff’s used The Source as their tag line. That one area with the cases and watches could have been the Fortunoff jewelry off shoot. The Source, while a bit eerie, doesn’t seem as decayed as others. Having the hangar vibe was an awesome idea. It would be impossible to compete with the Roosevelt Mall. As usual great film. I managed the IT for the company, the best location we had was in Roosevelt Field. The craft company folded back in 1999. They tried to be too many things at once and expanded faster then they could keep up. I remember the day we announced we were going out of business was the same week we had just held the grand opening for the 30k sqft Massapequa store. Hey Sal, once this whole quarantine business is over, you should head up to the Auburn Mall, in Auburn, Maine. I haven't been in 4 years, but when I went, half of the storefronts were used as storage for presumably the mall's owner. There were motorcycles, mannequins, etc. That mall is what got me into malls and dead malls more specifically, and I think it'd make a neat video. What I think is most interesting is that the mall's former western anchor is now a TD call center.

The prevalence of Broadway Commons to the east caused The Source to see less traffic than expected. In March 2020 shortly before the covid-19 pandemic was declared the mall’s main anchor, which was a Gertz when it opened in 1956 and became a sterns in 1982 before becoming a macys in 2001, closed permanently after more than 63 years. Broadway is not a dead mall yet because of the presence of Ikea as an anchor store which has driven more traffic to the mall than the macys store since the mid-2000s.

The glass wall below the sign looks like hangar doors as does the ceiling/roof. Also, couldn't see it well, but the little shop on the right side of the soda machine just as you were leaving that area is reminescent of an airport snack or gift shop. Couldn't see it well though.

I used to live nearby during late 90's thru 2010's; Fortunoff when open was an amazing upscale department store - noted for wedding registry type items - fine china, silverware... & also its annual magnificent Christmas shop on lower level replete with multiple enormous Snow Village and other Dept 56 displays, trees, lights, the works. But specific to the Source mall - what really gave it its kick early on was the Long Island location of Virgin Megastore (biggest most popular of which in region was location in Union Square, NYC) - but for us "bridge & tunnel" suburban types - Virgin @ Source was groovy local destination to go check out latest music - had like 30 CD listening stations - & open till midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Add several nice restaurants - was a poppin' low key "reliever" mall to nearby sometimes overpacked Roosevelt Field; there was also a nice Old Navy + a food court w/ good pizza, etc. But by time Fortunoff & Virgin had folded by mid 2000's - mall lost pretty much all its draw appeal.

I vividly remember the big H&M that was at the top of the escalators where you’d turn right to get to the food court, the small model propeller plane that hung above the food court in front of the giant glass windows that made the area look beautiful when it brought in tons of sunlight, the fancy-looking storefront on the right beyond the food court being a Yankee Candle, and the storefront diagonal from it to the right of the food court Cinnabon being a GameStop, which was one of the first tenants to vacate, and the first sign that I’d see of the mall’s tragic decline. Only thing we really go back there for now is to reminisce or Dave & Busters.

I used to go to that mall all the time during it's heyday. Was always so crowded that you could never find a table at the food court. Sad to see how it looks now in a shell of it's former self, but it was almost predictable that it was going to close down with all the anchor stores like Fortunoffs and Circuit City going out of business. A big blow was the opening of the Galleria mall just west of the source. A lot of the stores in that mall used to be in the Source. 13:10 used to be a Swatch, watch store. And there used to be a huge carousel in the middle at 7:45. The only businesses that are doing well there are Cheesecake Factory and Dave & Busters, but they both closed off their entrances to the mall and can only be accessed from the outside. Not sure about the future of the mall as there are several speculations.
