- Hospital emergency rooms have become de facto shelters for Haitians refugees in Boston, Massachusetts.
Violence and lawlessness in Haiti are fueling a wave of refugees to the U.S. and many are arriving in Massachusetts where they encounter another crisis: a severe housing shortage. Emergency shelters are full and some new arrivals, like Line Leonard, end up spending the night in the lobby of the emergency room at Boston Medical Center.
Leonard fled Haiti, he said, after gangs threatened his life. He is among the more than one thousand people who have sought help in the past month at the Boston nonprofit Immigrant Families Services Institute. The biggest challenge for the nonprofit is finding housing for the new arrivals.
Massachusetts is home to the third largest Haitian population in the U.S.

I’m In dc and they won’t give me and my kids nothing because I use to live with my mom. I showed proof that I didn’t live there even got two letters written they still won’t help me. The daycare process is horrible. But these immigrants can just come over here and get everything. It’s so unfair like dang it make me wish I was an illegal immigrant

if half these people had the same love, compassion and dignity for America Citizens it would be great!
There are a ton of more affordable places to live in between Hati & Boston if its truely Hati and violence that they are fleeing. Very few americans with birth rights can afford to live in Boston.
Why don’t they pay for the housing like the rest of us?
Lack of work permits equals unable to work. Add to the fact that they, the migrant has to compete with ppl already here (teens, women, divorced ppls, disabled ppl going back to work etc)

Overpoulation esp of men is a big problem
There needs to be some type of incentive for landlords my parents own an apartment and are Haitian. We have one vacant apartment and two that in contract with the city. We are willing to let go of these contracts to house the immigrants but their needs to be some type of incentive
