We just bought a new home. Wasn’t something we were planning to do at 60 but it was a situation where a family member had to go into a nursing home and her main concern was that her home stayed in the family. It gives her peace so we were willing. The house was built in 1952 and was the only home they ever lived in. The kitchen is postage stamp size. Of course there is only 2 of us that live in the home, but we have 5 kids that are married with kids of their own and my concern was how we would have holiday meals. I turned a coat closet into a pantry and put my freezer in the basement. And I figure we can put our table in the basement for holiday dinners. We will figure it out. Sometimes life throws us a curve and we have to change how we do things. For the first couple of weeks, I was down and overwhelmed, but then you remember why your situation changed and it brings you peace. Once you find it, solutions are more easily found.

I’m 60 too and my husband wants us to move into a bungalow, but I’m feeling so reluctant for the upheaval and future work renovating. Good luck with your new adventure. We may be 60, but we aren’t out yet lol. We may have a lot more innings in us. Hope it all goes well.

It sounds like we have very similar houses and situations. We're the same age with grown children and grands. I was very overwhelmed at first but after 6 years it's taking shape and definitely more functional than it was at first. Our house no longer feels overwhelming, but just feels like home. ❤

Nice if it's not to your taste do some remodeling spruce it up. Put it back on the market for a bit more. Don't keep something that's not right for you. If you want it in family offer it to family first. Don't feel obligated it's called Swedish- dumping when family guilt you into a present, gift, their history stuff that needs to go to a museum. You can always set it as a vacation rental per week for those needing to come to the area most are 800- 2000 week. Then it pays for future restorations and it's a showcase house. Always preserved. But let go. No need to let guilt of the wrong house for you when you are aging. You will need one floor and space to entertain in the next few years. Let the guilt go and further your life of healing. You only have 1 life it's 2023 be as happy as a clam that made a pearl. I'm 53 and my husband is almost 60 and we are never guilted. We face issues and move on. An apartment is what we needed and so the gigantic house gone. Easy decisions talk to a banker, contractor, and realtor and make decisions on vacation rental if the bank sees rental income then they see a investment & they may rewrite the loan of both onto one loan. Make sure you make the house as every vacation rental has a favy name. Like the cottage at Westbrook, sanders farm, Ranch on plum, Laura's cabin on lark lake. Honoring them or where it's at it what you should do. Make it simple, hire a home cleaner team & get focused on goals.

I completely agree about working with what you have. One of my favorite sayings is, "Bloom where you are planted." We've lived in 1200sq ft for almost 28 years, and we've made it work. Of course we'd love more space - I have a tiny kitchen, but I've cooked wonderful meals for my family in it, and it's been a blessing. ❤ You make what you have work!

Your kitchen looks perfectly fine with that freezer in it, and it doesn't make it look crowded or unworthy. I had to hang shelves in my laundry room and build an entire wall just to have a pantry, and it's not aesthetically pleasing, but it works for us. Let the naysayers deal with their insecurities about a complete stranger's kitchen on their own 😉 you're doing what's best for you and your family ❤❤

You are correct, Costco is more expensive than other warehouse stores. However Costco focuses not only on savings, but also on quality of their products. The food selections are mostly healthier than other "discount" or warehouse stores. I prefer a healthier product that I will pay a little more for, than a cheaper unhealthy selection. If we can all get into the mind set that we do not need to consume large amounts of food to be healthy, just smaller plates with healthier non-processed choices. i think you will come to enjoy Costco eventually.

I think the prices at Costco vary. The rotisserie chicken is a good price, the romaine lettuce is a good price, butter is often cheaper in bulk there. The clothes are good quality and I think are worth it for that alone. They have a cut of steak called flap steak, not flank. The organic ground beef is really good and well priced. That is really good and it's the only place that I've found it. Vitamins and non-prescription medication are also priced well there.

Amy hi you really don’t need to justify what you have done. I think the way you’ve done it is so workable for your family. Don’t feel you need to do what the comments suggest. Your kitchen your way !

It is so fun for me that you have moved down here and everything around here is so new for you😊. Detwiler’s is great! If you and the hubby ever want to have a day date and go to lunch, stop by Riviera Dunes Marina and eat at the restaurant there (inside and outside options)…I am the office manager at the marina office there….it would totally make my day if you stopped in the marina office and said hello!

    Hi Amy,
Had to wait to find a quite time to sit and watch your video without interruptions.
I think it’s great that you went back and organized the kitchen where it’s more comfortable for you to work in…not saying you may tweak it again but it’s more to your liken
You did a lot so far without realizing it. I can appreciate all that you did and are going to do.
Thanks so much for sharing with us and especially todays Psalm. 🙏
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Suggestion for that laundry cabinet in your closet: Take that wire rack out and use it for extra shoe storage.

You need a tub thats half the size of your sink from the dollar store to put in your sink to wash dishes. That way you can use half the sink to rinse. I use one and its handy.

The freezer in your kitchen never looked out of place in NC, nor here. You make it work for your needs. I'm with you on Costco, which has some great stuff, but is a little pricey. Your home is coming together nicely, and I'm so glad you have your happy place, the pool!

As my Mam, may she rest in peace, always said, "be thankful for small mercies". You're perfectly right, we CAN make do, be resourceful, make the best of things & situations. Haven't had a chance yet to watch all the video, but a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY to JANE! Hope she had a lovely day. In Irish, Jane becomes "Sinéad", pronounced SHIN AID.

That weird white key looks like a freezer key. Also the tool under your sink is for the garbage disposal in case it gets jammed. there is a place underneath to use the tool to manually turn it.

As you accumulate and build new pieces, write on the parts you have to keep with a fine point sharpie like the little white plastic key in the drawer so you don't forget what they're for ❤

I used my vents lights, in fact left them on all the time, and noticed how *hot* they had become. I shut them off and have never been able to turn them on again. I think at the time they were halogen lights - which do run hot, versus LED which are cool and use minimal electricity. If your vents lights are halogen, I would not use them for all around lighting all day because of the experience I had. I have had an electrician / appliance professional look at the lighting, and while the vent still works, they told me they could not fix the lighting harness. Feel like I need a whole new hood because of it.
