Wow, this has been one of the best videos I have seen in awhile when it comes to drones. Now I want to implement in a new ship design I was thinking of. Thank you so much
personally I like using a mix of standard attack drones, decoy drones (try to stay closer to the enemy ship and draw fire), and suicide drones (essentially a glorified warhead with some thrusters that rams into the enemy ship) one of my personal favorite drone designs I have made of the third type is more advanced, requiring someone to pilot it, and is called the "mosquito" - it has four "legs" which are landing gear on the ends of pistons, and then a central piston between them that has a warhead and a drill on it. It starts with the "legs" extended, and at the press of a button the legs simultaneously begin to retract while the central piston extends and the drill starts boring through the enemy ship's hull. Once all pistons stop, the warhead detonates.

Great video! really looking forward to a in depth video of this, I would quite like to put drones around my cargo carriers but the guide is VERY confusing
You're a very knowledgeable person about space engineers, so I have an odd question, is it worth it to have a Pod of decoys attached to a ship to attract fire, maybe covering the pod in heavy armor and putting point defense around it to make it so you need less armor on the rest of your ship?
If I may chip in my humble opinion, the decoys do loose some of their effectiveness based on distance from targetible components. So for maximum efficacy your pod will either need a lot of decoys clustered together (their targeting weight seems to stack) in order to draw fire away from major components *or* you'll need multiple decoys pods across your ships located near to the systems they're drawing fire away from. As far as if it's worth it, I'd say yes, and you can even enhance the affect by building a projector/welder set up that automatically repairs the decoys and their armor with a few cargo containers of spare steel plates nearby.
@@MediumRareOpinions I was planning on making a mothership styled thing, the main core would have mostly spaced armor, the pods would be along it's umbilical spine that other ships of the fleet would dock to, protecting both the ships that are still docked and drawing away some fire from the crucial areas. I was planning on making four of the pods on the tips of outcroppings along the spine, would that kinda thing work or would it be better to have the outcroppings arranged around the core of the mothership? I could do both but the more pods I use the more it costs in heavy armor. Basically is it worth it to heavily defend the pods or should it be mostly an afterthought
@@rowbot5555 In terms of enemy Turret behavior, they'll target whatever they detect first and then switch to any decoys that have come into range after the first block gets destroyed. So it may be useful to build a superficial heavy armored "nose" on your ships bow if you're using the ship aggressively. *What sort of shape is your ship though* ? That can have a large influence on the placement. As an example ships that are long and thin can get a lot of benefit from heavy bows as long as they always face the enemy head on. So light armor hulls with plenty of gyroscopes and good thrust in all directions, they can keep their heavy bow or decoy nose in between the enemy and their critical systems very effectively. Or are you looking for more a defensive design that's got 360 degree protection?

I would love a more detailed breakdown, but this is such a valuable asset. Does this work in atmosphere? I’d love an accompanying Air and recon Force for my assaulting ground units.
Technically it works in atmosphere (if you replace the thrusters) but I wouldn't take it lower than 1500m cuz it may hit the groud when circling around. Also if you decide to make an atmospheric version make sure that the drone has enough thrust in all 6 directions.
I'd like to know how flexible the system is, in regards of different armaments on the drone fleet, can a dedicated Ramming Drone be sent in at need, are they usable in a diverse group; can they be docked and rearmed at a different ship than the one they are being directed from? These kind of things
In general there is no limitation when it comes to the armament you can place on the drone. As long as it is added to the correct group it should work. When it comes to separate roles/groups - I'm not sure. That would be useful feature as - like you said - we could have multiple types of specialised drones like ecm, combat, ramming etc. As for the docking - if you have two controlers on two different ships you can dock the drones on each of them, I'd advise to turn on just one at a time as if both of them would be ON, the drones would most likely go stupid.
