It's interesting how they come to the correct conclusion: Data is protecting them from a threat with his silence, and Picard even says that he's willing to live with the mystery, and then they all go screw it up anyway.
the problem is simple, he's willing to live with the mystery, but he has to know it's a mystery, he has to to a degree understand that data is in the situation for a reason. Ultimately it's not the planet that's the conundrum, it's data.
He's doing it for Data. If they just left Data would get kicked from Starfleet.
@@iondustt kicked from starfleet, and likely destroyed or wiped
It's a nice gesture of the entity to get Deanna dressed after taking over control of her.
Yeah. Bummer.
Seriously though, why even film her asleep in bed in the first place, when the scene could have just as easily been staged with her sitting down to read, or maybe getting food form the replicator, or really anything that would have her already dressed
Well she wasn't knocked up this time so there's that.
They should have had her interupted during yoga with Dr. Crusher.
Every possessing entity should have the same consideration.

Getting your wrist broken by an Android makes for a better bloodwine story than getting it broken by Counselor Troi, alien possession or not. Worf must be glad his memory is wiped.
I think the alien possession has something to do with that. Doesn't make sense to me, but maybe to the writers.

I appreciate how the Enterprise tends to visit star systems near Earth. In most space operas, they just visit random distant supergiant stars that are visible from Earth because it's the stars people know by name.
Most stars Ent-D visits are hundreds, if not thousands, of lights years from Earth.
@@LordTalax The Milky Way Galaxy is a hundred thousand light years in diameter. Enterprise D almost never ventures much beyond a few thousand light years, and even then it usually takes time to get out there.

This show was the best!
Picard's choice here was irrational. The Enterprise was safe. Rather than rush off into danger, confront Data with what you know, convince him to admit the nature of the danger, then have Starfleet quarantine the area. There's nothing wrong with the viewers not knowing any more than the characters.
Makes for a pretty poor dramatic presentation, however.
Unless he justified the situation as a threat to starfleet security. They lossed a day in their memory, and had been potentially a leaked in classified information. This is why Picard said to return to the scene of the crime.
Yeah, why not ask Data, carefully, step by step?
I remember him doing so, but only later.
He probably didn't expect that he'd ordered Data to lie. However, he probably understood that it would take an extreme situation to get Data to undo something that he generally hated doing... there HAD to be a significant reason... or else Data deserved to be removed from duty... unthinkable.
She's a Goa'uld! 4:06
This was a fun episode but it makes no sense from any angle. The Enterprise was attacked twice and the captain surrendered without even taking damage or assessing the threat level. He just took their word that they would be destroyed without even checking to see if that was even a possibility. Then the time difference... after the second attack, the ship's clocks are now two days out of sync with the rest of the galaxy. The first message they get from anyone other than the Enterprise will show a two day difference. Even a simple email from a family member to anyone on the crew would seem to be from the future. Like I said, fun, but ridiculous even for science fiction.
Whatever, Worf. An old lady in a bear costume kicked your ass.
😔 The beans weren't hidden very well... 😆
And I mark this one to be exiled from my personal kingdom of heaven Amen.

So a lifeform like _that_ originated on a class M planet?
not necessarily, it's 'space' is a star system that happens to have an M class planet. it could have come from the star itself, or have come to the system from elsewhere due to something in this system being beneficial for its ongoing growth/survival
It's an M-class planet NOW.
It doesn't look particularly inviting M class from space. Probably a borderline one.

Would they be the kind that contain COFFEE?
Why did the alien bother to have Counselor Troi change and do her hair?
Warp 2? They want to get there in a few weeks instead of a few hours?
Lousy strategic decision. They have evidence that a delicate compromise was reached - but decide to go back and risk upsetting it and possibly getting everyone killed and the ship destroyed over the professional fate of ONE Star fleet officer? What happened to "The needs of the many out weight the needs of the few"?
Not often I say this, but in this case Picard acted foolishly. He risks the entire ship when a probe send from long distance would have done the job. Oh, and here comes an energy field? Let's stick around and see what happens. Not like we have warp drive to get us out of there, right?
Picard figures it out, then blows it...
Rare mistake, all for the plot
The problem is, if the process to wipe their memories takes 24 hours, the ship would stay 24 hours behind -- a fact revealed when they eventually synchronized with an outside source, say, a federation space station. Wouldn't that prompt the investigation all over again?
This was one of the few episodes that dealt with time dilation when not utilizing 'warp drive' and simply high order impulse and the transition from one to the other causes clocks to drift. In canon a wormhole can cause time dilation such as when approaching the relativistic speed of light so losing a day or more is simply an effect of it.
Not to drag on the explanation too long with technobabble the solution is to set everything up at a point of time after the 24 hours to make it appear to the crew that the ship encountered a random wormhole and simply accept what happened because time dilation is an understood issue to all space faring species.
Troy sounds like a Goa’uld

This was a good episode, but at the same time it didn't make much sense logically. The senior staff knowing what actually happened, and why they couldn't go back to that planet wouldn't have hurt anything. Picard is a smart and good leader so he would've understood the danger and respected the alien's wishes and just not went back.
But the Paxans would not have accepted that solution.
As Picard stated, he would otherwise have been content to live with the mystery, but Data's career was at stake.
The Paxton needed total removal of the existence knowledge... data, not being a lifeforms and agreed to NEVER reveal the existence was their only compromise.
@@JimsEvilTwin2 That's what I'm saying. For Data to risk that plus knowing they were figuring out something wasn't right logically he would've told Picard the deal instead of risking their lives when they decided to go back.
Picard could have still maybe phrased his orders for Data to keep the secret better in the first place. A lot of this could have been avoided if Data had been at least allowed to tell Picard that he was under orders to keep a secret and that it was Picard himself who gave those orders.

Data's biggest problem is a lack of cleverness. He's competent to a fault, and sometimes that fault is a chasm.
