Born March 3rd 1948, Jackie Mittoo has been a key figure in Jamaican music, from its Ska and Rocksteady Days all the way to Reggae.
Born Donat Roy Mittoo in Brown's Town, St. Ann’s Parish, Jamaica, Jackie Mittoo began recording professionally in 1961 at only 13 years old for legendary producer Coxsone Dodd. Just 4 years later, he was part of the foundational ska group The Skatalites. After spending much of the 1960s and very early ‘70s with Studio 1 as a member of both The Soul Vendors and Sound Dimension, Jackie Mittoo found his way to Bunny Lee, where he recorded these songs.
While Jackie Mittoo is responsible for a good number of foundational Reggae riddims, this album offers a small window into Jackie Mittoo’s impact on the Reggae landscape.
To put into perspective Jackie Mittoo's legacy in Reggae, he is directly responsible for creating some of the genre's most well known Riddims, including:
A Darker Shade of Black, Swing Easy, Real Rock, College Rock, Vanity, Drum Song, Pressure And Slide, Rockfort Rock, Rougher Yet, Pick Up The Pieces, and Full Up.
While Jackie Mittoo is responsible for a good number of foundational Reggae riddims, this album offers a small window into Jackie Mittoo’s impact on the Reggae landscape.
