    🤓 about
I’m a software engineer based in London with a background in mechanical and aerospace engineering. Most of my time is spent reading, coding and drinking too much coffee. I got into coding by automating simulation workflows and building EdgeSheet.com, and now I’m documenting my life as an engineer on the internet.
    Thanks for watching! :)

As a Computer Science student (end of Bachelor 3 at the moment), I have a rather similar view as yours on AI. Just like you said, the industry has evolved a lot in the past decade and we are not learning the same things other CS students would have back then.
I see AIs as tools that we need to learn how to use and master rather than an actual threat to our careers, and I think the people thinking this way might be missing out a lot, regarding the power of AIs and how they can contribute to our work.
I am currently directing myself to a career in Cyber Security, a very demanding field that still requires basic programming skills any CS student would get. I think that anyone pursuing a career in IT now, probably more than before, needs to try and identify a more precise field within IT rather than just aim to be a "Software Developer" in the broad sense.
Anyways, that was my personal opinion that I wanted to share.
Really good and inspiring video as always 🤍

The thing is, coding isn't a means to an end for me, it's the fun part, it's why I'm here and there's already too much extra stuff we need to do on top of coding than I would like, and I don't want it to become even more so... it's not losing my job that I'm concerned about, it's that my job will become boring as it gets increasingly taken over by things that are not coding, but it seems inevitable...

Great video again and to the point authentic content, especially given the hype about AI! As a Data scientist myself and having worked with LLMs from a development perspective, I couldn't agree more. Even as a Data Scientist a lot of the work is actually software engineering and I use tools like ChatGPT mostly to brainstorm. While end to end application development might be plausible with agents and recursive prompting its not going to be production grade anytime soon.
In this context I remember the dialogue from the iRobot movie where the AI projection of Dr. Lanning says to Will Smith: My responses are limited, you must ask the right question 😇
Keep up the good work! Even as an experienced engineer I am learning new perspectives for software engineers from your videos! Entertaining yet motivational 😇

I agree. You must know to ask the right questions. Without a general technical understanding of what is happening using AI to write code can be difficult. When I saw people using AI for coding, even very simple coding tasks, who just weren't familiar with the basics it mostly didn't work out.

chatgpt feels more like a programming language or a tool, it helps write some code faster and can help with critical thinking but not replace it. i find it useful for bouncing ideas, boiler plate code, explaining error messages or presenting a few options on how to go about something. i have tried many times since early 2023 for it to just do my job and it fails each time.

    • @CSJackie
      @CSJackie  2 місяці тому

I agree, it’s a great help while coding or doing proof of concepts. I only tried the free version though. It needs a lot of guidance and fine tuning. Software engineering is so much more than just coding so I find it difficult to imagine LLM based AI to take on the entire job

I like Copilot, especially the explaining. I had to turn the code suggestion off as a Junior as it was more confusing and wrong many times. Or just wrote the right code instead of me which I couldn't understand so totally took away the learning phase from me.

    Great points around AGI.
AI at this stage has helped with code reviews and writing more efficent code. Prompt AI to try and reduce the lines of code written so it is easier to interpret what is being done. Use AI to summarize what the code is doing. This helps for the next developer who has to make updates.
Let's be honest developers who aren't upskilling will be left behind and those who do not want to be replaced by AI should stay 1 step ahead of the curve and/or know how to prompt AI to be effective.
Thank you CSJ for knowing the topics to raise and making us becaome better.

AGI doesn’t worry me too much, however, the misuse of AGI is much more of a concern for me.
Also, I think what’s currently going with software engineering is that ever since these LLM’s have been introduced, software engineering is integrating much more principles and disciplines into its field (One of the main ones being human-computer interaction which is becoming much more prevalent amongst software engineers).

Hi Jackie, from what i heard a LLM trained on datasets produced by an AI will decrease in performance compared to an LLM trained on human made datasets so i believe human made work will increase in value (OpenAI and other companies already struggle to find quality documents to "feed" to their AIs. Now i think the job market will be highly disturbed until we find a new equilibrium (but we will find one eventually)

the fact is that AI allows you to solve problems faster, but on the other hand, I am not a supporter of replacing things that work well just to boast that "it uses AI". Yes, some weak bootcamp programmers may have problems, but good, quickly adapting specialists who think abstractly beyond the coding schemes in one technology will certainly cope.

Yeah, its mostly hype. Our current implementations need exponential amounts of data, which they are running out of, and models collapse once they are trained on model generated data (so there goes using the internet again). Not to mention Sam Altman has even mentioned the energy required would be dependent on something like nuclear fusion to be solved first. Maybe if we started implementing analog microchips which use less energy, and there was a more powerful deep learning architecture after transformers.

Wow.... She is just stunning. I think A.I really only poses two threats in the near future. First and most obvious would be human dependency and lack of learning. and 2. The creation of super viruses which we are already beginning to see. The latest even infected Linux which is fairly rare.. Luckily A.I is hardware dependent and the average user just won''t have the hardware for A.I to be a real threat. A giant node full of 4090's or A100''s that'd be different. A.I is just nothing more then comparing known knowns against percentages and that has value only up to a certain point.

maybe we need AI because of demographics. women and men are employed and have less time left for having kids. with decreasing population only way to increase productivity and stabilize wealth is AI and robotics. Especially for mediocre countries like Germany where immigration happens into its social security system but not labour market.
