The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.
    H.P. Lovecraft

The mountains of madness, these purple mountains malignancy are from another dimension with parts of it anchored in several times and places. One of which is Antarctica now and in the past when it was connected to Australia and possibly several other spaces and times like in Asia. The Q'n-qang (the star-headed Old Ones) were fearful of them.

I feel guilty listening to this without supporting the artists! I'll have to buy it and look at the liner notes on the orchestrations, if they even do liner notes anymore. Thanks much for this.

"It is absolutely necessary, for the peace and safety of mankind, that some of earth’s dark, dead corners and unplumbed depths be let alone; lest sleeping abnormalities wake to resurgent life, and blasphemously surviving nightmares squirm and splash out of their black lairs to newer and wider conquests."
"All that Danforth has ever hinted is that the final horror was a mirage. It was not, he declares, anything connected with the cubes and caves of echoing, vaporous, wormily honeycombed mountains of madness which we crossed; but a single fantastic, daemoniac glimpse, among the churning zenith-clouds, of what lay back of those other violet westward mountains which the Old Ones had shunned and feared."
"He has on rare occasions whispered disjointed and irresponsible things about “the black pit”, “the carven rim”, “the proto-shoggoths”, “the windowless solids with five dimensions”, “the nameless cylinder”, “the elder pharos”, “Yog-Sothoth”, “the primal white jelly”, “the colour out of space”, “the wings”, “the eyes in darkness”, “the moon-ladder”, “the original, the eternal, the undying”, and other bizarre conceptions; but when he is fully himself he repudiates all this and attributes it to his curious and macabre reading of earlier years. Danforth, indeed, is known to be among the few who have ever dared go completely through that worm-riddled copy of the Necronomicon kept under lock and key in the college library."
    H. P. Lovecraft - The Mountains of Madness

i'd say it is a good thing. soothing at the very least. seems hard to pinpoint the direction it's coming from... deep below the sea? from outer space? inside or outside? feels like such a direction doesn't even exist. in our dimension at least... in fact i think it's not coming from anywhere, because it already is everywhere, everything, and quite possibly the only thing

For my own record, I shall speak of the things my team, and I, discovered recently. The horrors that lay hidden in the ice, the antarctic continente is not to be taken lightly.
I assure you, there are periods in the planets history, that could drive you insane if you took the time to look at them in detail.
Let's begin to say that, as a great explorer and scientist, I may not consider myself quite sane, to begin with. Rather I would say that anyone who researches the ancient history of the world, is not completely sane.
Yet... I must speak and admit that, my team and I chose to seal the research that we were working on, not because of lack in funds, but rather because it was extremely dangerous, to us, to humans, to humankind in general. The forces we came upon, the darkness we averted, and cosmic implications we barely knew about.
    Yes...
We all barely escaped with our lives, but our minds... Well, that is another tale.
First and foremost, my name is Nathaniel Phillips, and I work, or worked, in the institute for archeological research for 30 years, yet in this last voyage to the antarctic continente, I have seen such horrors, such titanic discoveries that I have left my position in the institute, for fear that my knowledge may bring the Ancients back to our world...
I have seen the unthinkable, I have dreamed of the undreamable, and I have feared for all humankind, that we may be nearing our own extinction.
For the Ancients may be back, and we do not even know of that...
-Excerpt of the novel, Voyages to the Abyss, my own work based on the mountains of madness by H.P Lovecraft-
