  • This week I challenged myself to learn a language from scratch only using the world's most popular language learning app to answer one question: How well does Duolingo really work?

OK OK hold up I have a lot to say and I'm only 2 minutes in haha...
You are attempting to do CRAZY amounts of Duo. I am not interested in whether you learn French or not because, yeah, I think I can see where that one's going haha, but I am interested to see if you can even do that much Duolingo. Like when you said those 3 units in 2 days... dang... I'll update my comment as we go...
Edit: "It's been taking so long to get through these units." - Yep! Duo would actually be good if it weren't throttled so much.
My argument in the video of mine that you used the clip from is essentially that, yeah, it can be sort of helpful for a very brief time but once you find more useful resources, it becomes essentially useless, and this argument that I see thrown out there that it's actually brilliant is just the world's most powerful copium.
BTW, your French tests... French is a really hard language to test an English speaker's knowledge of ACCURATELY, because it's essentially impossible to remove external factors such as: how good is the person at deducing meaning? How vast is their English vocab? (e.g. "trove"... If you know that word you might know that it actually comes from "find"... which makes the French "trouver" easy.
What's their exam technique like? etc etc.) - I once tested C1 on quite an intense French test, and I was absolutely never C1 in French, I was probably B1 but with a B2 vocab... and then a C3 English vocab, which essentially just means French with some different spelling.

Wow hi, thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment! Nate and I have both watched your videos and love your content, so that means a lot coming from you!
I’m so glad you understand where I’m coming from and agree. Obviously I did not learn the entire French language in one week only using Duolingo… it was just meant to be a fun challenge (that obviously some took a little too seriously). I did not realize, however, how hard and time consuming it was going to be since I’ve only ever casually used Duolingo. I definitely agree that is helpful for a little bit but it gets SO REPETITIVE and useless after a while. There are so many better resources out there.
Also, thanks for the note on the French tests. That makes a lot more sense hearing that it’s hard to accurately test a learners ability.
Thanks so much again for watching and commenting! Your language tips are always welcome!

As a Duolingo alternative, I personally use Immersive Translate to learn a new language. I’ve been using it to learn Vietnamese the past few months, and I have to say, it’s been really game-changing.

@@TheKateandNate Just to let you know - these comments are by bots, I get at least one every day. Immersive Translate seems to be nothing, or maybe actually malware. It's not a language learning app in any case.

We both study and speak Spanish conversationally and want to eventually branch out into other languages in the future. We aren’t sure what those might be yet, but Mandarin and Italian are definitely two on our list! Any suggestions?

I have studied French since middle school in the 1980s, visited France a few times, did fax machine tech support in French after college, and have been on a nearly 800 day streak in duolingo trying to refresh my memory, but trying all same online tests you did, I only scored B1. I've apparently (according to the tests) forgotten the conditional tense, plus-que-parfait, and mixed up depuis and il y a for placing an event in the past vs starting in the past and continuing, and duolingo hasn't really gotten to the point of refreshing those topics for me even after 800 days of lessons.

Salut ! Greetings from England. Love the clickbait title.
Learning French is much much harder than learning Spanish, and to learn conversational French which will help you get around France is, In My Humble (and Honest) Opinion, harder than learning German for a native English speaker.
Of course, as an American, you have the option of spending possibly several months in Quebec and trying to pick up a decent level of spoken French there.
When I heard in the video that you wanted to get to level A2 in 7 working days, I shrugged my shoulders and said "Whatever!"
C'etait tres interessante pour tout le monde a regarder ton video

    • @TheKateandNate
      @TheKateandNate  22 дні тому

Ha, yeah you’re right, French was very hard to learn! As I said in the video, this was really just a way to challenge myself and test how much I could possibly learn in a week only using Duolingo. I really did believe A2 was a possibility in 7 days, but unfortunately, only using this one resource proves that to be near impossible. So, maybe I was a bit too optimistic. Thanks for your feedback!

Regardless of what cope you want to provide, it is irrelevant. My OP said that it was bullshit clickbait and I still say it was bullshit clickbait, so you have missed the point entirely. If she admits that she was too optimistic, then the claim in the title was bogus.
