    The diary of Tom Riddle has always been the most peculiar horcrux. Ok Harry being a horcrux also has a strong argument but that was easily explained. The diary was kind of a mystery as to how it actually works, theres so much more detail surrounding it than we’re led to believe. Has anyone ever wondered what Tom actually wrote in the diary when he first got it? Or how about, out of all the horcruxes, why was the diary so poorly protected? No super secretive protection spell for it? Or how it actually consumes the life of the writer? That seems like a big ask for something that’s main function is to hold a piece of a persons soul.

    I thought that the diary contained Riddle's instructions and observations about his experiences with black magic during his last year in Hogwarts, especially regarding his making of his first horrocrux. I remember that (at least) in the film, the pages of the diary move to a certain date when Harry Potter asks the diary to show him where was the last time the Chamber was opened. Probably it has a magic spell that would prevent its contents to be visible to random people, unless they ask the diary something by writing on the apparently blank sheets. For me it's like a hybrid between the Marauders Map and the Pensieve, but also having the ability to possess your soul

      No. That was the potions text book. And that was Snape's book. He revealed that at they end. "Yes. I'm the half blood prince." They thought it was voldemorts. @@cre8iveflare that's a completely different thing. The potions book was just a normal book with handwritten notes and corrections by Snape itself, but it was not magical in nature. In the film for HP2, Harry asks the diary if it knows something about the last time in which the Chamber of Secrets was opened. After that, the pages of the diary move to the date in which Riddle blamed Hagrid for that, and then Harry gets absorbed into the memory of the events of that day, as if the diary was a Pensieve

    I always wondered if the diary was a gift from the orphanage to Tom as he left for boarding school. I doubt he would have had his name added because he hated being called Tom. As Tom learned more magic, he probably enchanted the diary so he could use it without others reading it. Then it was made a horcrux later. Perhaps after the ring he got from Morphin. That’s why the ring did so much damage to Dumbledore. The diary was probably an enchanted object that became a horcrux. It was probably 1st or 2nd horcrux. So either 1/2 a soul or a 1/4.

      We also know through the books Voldemort was only ever interested in taking magical items or items of significance and defiling them for the purposes of a Horcrux. It makes sense he would have kept a diary from the Orphanage as the Orphanage was the first place he had learned that he was "special" and where he had begun to torture the other children. It marked his journey into the wizarding world and in turn, his "calling to power".
      Other proof of this would be where he would take those children. He kept the locket within the cave of a place he had used once during a field trip to terrify the other orphans. Keeping such a locket in such a place shows that Voldemort was "attached" to the places where he fondly remembers harming others. Likewise, it's also why Voldemort had an attachment to Hogwarts as that was another step on his "journey".

      @@LDaemontus wrong on EVERY point...voldemort HATED the orphanage & BEGGED his headmaster 2 allow him 2 stay @ hogwarts 4 the summer holidays as well as the usual school year...matter of fact the ONLY reason he closed the chamber of secrets & framed hagrid was because he found out the governers were about 2 close hogwarts permanently & he COULDNT STAND the idea of being stuck n the orphanage...he chose the cave 2 hide the locket as it was VERY difficult 2 access & the whole point of having a horcrux is 2 hide it n a secure location...voldemort loved hogwarts because it was the ONLY place where he felt @ home & viewed hogwarts as his home

    • @LDaemontus
      @LDaemontus 4 роки тому +13

      @@mindovermatterbecomingyour1561 I believe you strongly misunderstood my comment. I did not specify it was the Orphanage itself. I specified it was the *harming* of the children the Orphanage that he took great pleasure in. He stole from the other children, made them miserable, even did things to them that they wouldn't speak about to the caretakers. He collected items from the children he hurt as a typical serial killer collects from their victims. Voldemort defiled those other orphans.
      Dumbledore had to make Tom swear he wouldn't harm other students while at Hogwarts when he discovered the wardrobe of items he had stolen from the other children. This was also the same scene where he tells Dumbledore that he's always known he was "special".
      In the eyes of a person like Tom Riddle, a diary from the past where he had begun to commit the crimes he took pleasure in is a sacred piece for his collection, a reminder of what he had done. Even better if it meant he defiled others like Ginny Weasley through it; an object that likely nobody could think could harm someone.
      Voldemort was ruthless. He manipulated, abused, used and murdered his way for his Horcruxes, taking things of historic and tragic value, often belonging to his victims, to defile into vessels for pieces of his soul.
      It's not the location, it's the act, the deeds, he committed. It's where he had begun his process of cruelty like a sociopath begins their acts on animals in childhood. It's a sick, twisted, crude way to keep the memory alive and it got twisted into a means in which he could continue to harm others.
      As for the cave...
      "In his childhood, Tom Riddle was brought to a seaside site near this cave on holiday with his orphanage. He discovered this cave and terrorised two fellow orphans, Amy Benson and Dennis Bishop, there. He most likely magicked their way to the cave scaring the children. The experience was so terrible they refused to divulge exactly what happened. Without magic, entering the cave would require uncommon mountaineering skills, as boats cannot approach the cliffs." - Harry Potter Wiki (confirmed by the Half-Blood Prince Novel & Movie).

    While I understand the half of a half of a half with the creation of each Horcrux I've always had this nagging suspicion that it isn't as easy to quantify.
    I wonder if each Horcrux was more special than simple division. For example, the diary could have contained his dreams which would explain why Voldy not being able to see his potential conquest of the whole magical world, only the domination of the Ministry of Magic. Nagini could have just contained his intelligence and ambition with no ability to learn anything useable like how to defeat love as that was in another Horcrux... Possibly, creativity put into the most creative of the Hogwarts Founders items, the cup of Hufflepuff. His insight beyond his current situation may have been sacrificed to the Diadem, and so forth. In other words, with the destruction of each Horcrux, he was cut off from a different part of himself. While I believe that his dreams were sacrificed by creating the diary I believe the one thing he never acknowledged was the comprehension of love and that was the Horcrux attached to Harry... The one he never meant to make and the one he was least likely to notice.

    I wouldn't be surprised if Tom Riddle wrote in the diary, but had enchanted it in away where NO ONE could read what he had written. But I 100% agree on the mathematical splitting, so as each time he splits his soul only a smaller percentage of his soul is placed into an object. I do think that the Diary was always plan B if Voldemort died, simply revive using the best horcrux. Unfortunately, the mission to restore Voldemort failed and had drastic results later.

    • @jakerockznoodles
      @jakerockznoodles 4 роки тому

      But why would he do it that way if he knew he'd be splitting his soul in seven? Why not have evenly sized chunks, or just a little in case one got destroyed. Being so blasé about the way he handled a whole half of his soul seems to reckless even for Voldemort.
      The whole division by two thing was just a theory I never bought and isn't really backed up in the text. If Slughorn meant half when explaining what a horcrux was, he would have stated "half", not "a bit". Keep in mind that at this point he had no idea that Voldemort was thinking about this process being carried out more than once, as he was shocked by the very notion of it when it's brought up toward the end of that conversation.

    • @edwardguest1404
      @edwardguest1404 4 роки тому

      jakerockznoodles he said to split the soul which suggests more that it is in half rather than a bit. Also you don’t have control of the amount of your soul you have split. You simply split it and then use that split piece to make a Horcruxe

    • @alexc5369
      @alexc5369 4 роки тому

      I don't think he can control how much soul is split with each murder, let us assume his soul splits in half with each murder, in order to work out what percentage of soul each horcrux possesses, we would need to know the number and order of each murder he has committed to apportion correctly. I will run through an example, let's say the only murders he committed were to create his horcruxes. Then the diary being his first would be 50% of his original soul, the ring would be 25%, the locket is 12.5%. the cup is 6.25%. the diadem is 3.125%. nagini was 1.56% and both Harry and voldy would possess 0.78% of his original soul. But as he committed many murders which were not used for horcruxes, his soul would still be split each time and could greatly change the above portions.

    Tom Riddle grew up a no-name orphan with no family history. When he came to Hogwarts, he found out he was related to Salazar Slytherin, a famous wizard; I think that was the moment he decided to finish his ancestor's work. He considered the chamber of secrets to be his birthright; it was, in many ways, one of the first things he ever got from his family. However, he couldn't take credit for being Slytherin's heir at the time, so he split his soul and left behind a diary to be passed onto a future Hogwarts student so that the chamber could once again be opened and the now fully-grown (and much more powerful) Voldemort could finally let it be known that he was finishing the work of his ancestor.

    I always assumed because it was one of his first, it made it the most powerful.
    But also, Tom chose stuff that was considered powerful, important.
    So, why the Diary?
    I think it was like his Marauder’s map, only it hid his thoughts, dark arts spells, secrets and maybe his own creations (potions, charms ect). Maybe it would spout charming lines and ‘helpful’ tips to anyone who didn’t know the password.
    That and he’d totally chose his own ‘grimoire’ as his first horcrux.
    Also, it’s easy to hide, and if he asked one of his loyal subjects (aka Abraxas Malfoy) to hide it, they wouldn’t realise quite what it was, they’d just recognise it as ‘Tom’s Grimoire’ and leave it hidden.
    Nice and safe for when he needed it.
    If only there hadn’t been that raid at Malfoy manor, Lucius wouldn’t have found it and dumped it into Ginny Weasley’s cauldron.

      I’m not sure where I heard/read this from but the ministry of magic was currently rummaging through Malfoy Manor for any kind of connections to Voldemort and he had to remove it from his possession in fear of having more trouble with the ministry. I know after the fall of Voldemort the first time Lucius tricked the ministry that he was under the imperious curse to avoid trouble. So him placing the diary in Ginny cauldron is a way to hide evidence of his connections to Voldemort. I’m not sure if he was aware of how important the diary is in terms of it’s one of the 7 horcruxes and also did it to spite the Weasleys and Dumbledore

    In the movie, Riddle said that he left his diary back, so someone later can fulfil Slytherins destiny. The dairy was the first Horcrux, so 50% of the soul. But before that one should answer how the soul works in Harry Potter. I understand it as some form of earth-bounding, an anchor so to speak. One Voldemort wanted to make even stronger while using the magical number seven. The Horcrux serves as body for a fraction of the soul so it cannot go into oblivion after death. It seems that only the whole soul can, there Voldemort could fly as dust after his death and not went to oblivion. But there seems to be still some connection because Voldemort felt the destruction of the Horcruxes and Tom Riddles Dairy seem to know current events.
    Maybe Riddle should have asked the Muggles how cloning works. Would be easier.

      Julian S. In the books Voldemort doesn’t know Harry has destroyed the Horcrux until they break into Bellatrix’s vault in the 7th book. He knows about the diary because of Lucius, but Voldemort doesn’t know about the ring and the medallion until they take the hufflepuff cup. That is one thing that always bugs me about the movies.
      It does make sense that he could feel the Horcruxes death since they are a part of his soul, but it’s clear in the books that Harry sees Voldemort search for the Horcruxes and finding them missing after they retrieved the cup and Voldemort was informed of it.

    😁😁 I appreciate the mention of the argument of the "amount of the soul" in each horcrux. My reasoning was that I don't think that math can be applied to a soul, that a split soul doesn't necessarily mean divided exactly in two, if a glass falls on the floor and by chance you break it into two, it doesn't mean that the pieces have the exact same size that's why I argued that the theory on the amount of soul in each horcrux was neither here nor there , also a soul isn't an object that you can measure. I'd rather think that the "amount" of soul you lose is proportinate to the atrocity of your choices. But however you look at it, there is no doubt that the diary is, together with the locket, one of the most important horcruxes. Since it was the first, it marked his decision of ridding himself of his humanity forever and contained the part of his soul that was still coming from a smart ambicious boy. Since then, we know that his soul has become more and more unstable and fragile, and progressively less human, therefore creating weaker horcruxes in Rowling's world. Great video, I really enjoyed this one!

    Awesome theory, and that makes complete sense. Yeah Myrtle was the first person he killed, so it would make sense that the first horcrux that Voldemort makes would be the strongest. Yeah and if he did put 50% of his soul into it, that is why it was a danger of him coming back if Ginny died. Yeah that would definitely explain why Voldemort was so harsh to Lucius (the prophecy was not really do or die to have, since he knew a lot about it anyway. But yeah if you count the diary, it would be the second major screw up for Malfoy). I had a random thought after watching the video. I wonder if subconsciously Lucius was trying to sabotage the possibility of the dark lord coming back, due to his life situation now being so fastly different (he was a lot of things for sure, but I think Lucius really did love his family and would really do anything to save them.), so that is why he gave it to Ginny. Yeah I think he knew what the diary was, or at least could guess how important it was, and I wouldn't be surprised if Voldemort gave him a bit of instruction for it. Lucius was at that time second in command to Voldemort, so he was trusted. Yeah for me I just cannot rectify how someone who was second in command to the greatest dark wizard of all time, could become the worst death eater of the bunch without a reason. So it would make sense that family would play a role in it, I really don't think Lucius was fully on board this time with being a death eater because of this. Just my theory but if Lucius kinda didn't want the dark lord to come back, because of his family or he was worried about his societal image if the dark lord was weaker this time around, then it would make sense why he fucked up so hard with the diary in the second book.

    I hate to beat a dead horse, but slughorn always described the process of creating a horcrux with “part of the soul”. Split also doesn’t necessarily mean split in half. Someone as great as Voldemort would most likely be able to gauge how much soul he wanted to endow a horcrux with. Though i do agree that the diary was probably the most important horcrux as it was the only one capable of actually reviving him (to our knowledge at least)

In it you speak about how he pushed the boundaries of magic further than anyone ever had. Dont you think this would be one of those cases? I mean hes already splitting his soul. Its not too much of a leap to be able gauge how much. This is all assuming the “half the soul” thing of course.

    I imagine before it even became a horecrux the journal was enchanted to hide it's contents from anyone other than Tom Riddle kinda like the Maurader's map. It also seemed to function like a pensive where yo out could fall into it and view memories as they unfolded. I also agree that it held the largest portion of his soul. There is no way around it. That's why Voldermort appeared so inhuman by the end, his body contained the smallest fragment of his soul aside from that piece in King's Cross which was not even capable of communication. What I really wonder is why Lucius didn't write on it and it take him over. I'm sure Voldermort wouldn't care to sacrifice his death eater. Also, like you mentioned, what if somehow two embodied versions of Voldermort existed? What a nightmare. And like, would they collaborate? Lol, strange.

  • @bxbomber7128

    Great video! I agree and think they would definitely merge. Voldemort did anything and everything so he thought would always allow him to "rise again". Whether he use a recipe, or a host body, what was left of his spirit would form into Voldemort again like in the Goblet of Fire. His soul was so ripped up from so many Horcruxes, he could never be handsome again, and 2 Voldemorts just doesn't make sense. I also agree with you as to why Voldemort was harsh on Lucius. But I also think he needed to make an example out of him. Lucius was once his next in command, and when he returned it was obvious that Lucius was not prepared, and didn't really believe that he would come back. Plus he told the ministry that he was under the imperius curse and basically denied actually dealing with Voldemort on his own accord and this was Voldemort's next in command. Death Eaters like Bellatrix and Barty Crouch Jr, never renounced Voldemort, and held strong convictions that Voldemort would return. His statement in the graveyard "not even you...Lucius" clearly made Lucius a marked man. He made sure that every time Lucius messed up, he would make an example out of him. I think sending him to retrieve the prophecy was almost a set up. He knew there would be a battle, because he sent the fake image of Sirius being tortured to Harry, and at that point he had very little faith in Lucius, and his abilities and loyalty.

      Its impossible for the diary voldemort and the main voldemort to merge as one being. What happens when you make a horcrux? The books explains that it splits the soul to a point it cannot by repaired by any magical means, the only thing that can repair the soul is an act of true remorse. Remember harry at the end saying to Voldemort he should show some remorse? Because Harry had seen his soul in limbo. For Diary voldemort and main voldemort to merge together the main voldermort would have to be remorseful in his actions he took creating the diary horcrux. He killed moaning myrtle to do that who was a muggle born of whom voldemort despised. Without being truly remorseful for her death, the 2 souls of voldemort would remain unable o merge together and thier simply would be 2 voldemorts

    This is a very well thought out video, but I do have one criticism/question. How would Voldemort be able to merge with his 16 year old self from the diary horcrux when , as far as I am aware, the only way to reunite a split soul would be to have remorse for what you did to split it in the first place? It seems like something Voldemort would never do.

    Well its lack of protection is a simple explanation really.
    All of the other horcrux's that voldermort made (aside from harry) play the role as a "safe" for a piece of his soul, so they have protection spells placed upon them. Simple to understand.
    The diary did not play the same role. As a horcrux, the role the diary played is as a weapon. The role of the diary is to eventually open the chamber of secrets. Since there is no reason to keep it protected, but to let it fulfil its mission, Malfoy was all the protection the diary needed until it was time for the diarys mission to begin

    I made an interesting observation about the size of each soul portion. I agree with you that the diary was the biggest part. It would make sense that when he started making more Horcruxes, his main soul would be less and less, which is why he looks so inhuman towards the end. I also think you're right, as none of the other Horcruxes would provide him with a replacement body. I would hate to be Lucius Malfoy when Voldy found out that it's his fault that the diary was destroyed.

    I got that question yesterday: How Wizards lived through some of the most known pandemic of the 20th century (like the Spanish Flu of 1918) I might be a fool for asking such a question, but i'd like to know. :) )

    Whilst I do agree that the creation of a horcrux halves the soul. It is also important to note that 'split' does not necessarily mean 'halve'.

    Mathematically your idea makes sense. I wondered about that when I read the Chamber of Secrets myself.

    2 questions.
    1) Do you have a video on how to make a horcrux? (Or at least the parts we know)
    2) Do you have a video on the order the horcruxes were made? (I know the first 2, and I’ll presume either Harry or Nagini was the last, but what about the rest?)

    Hey Dean did you know in chapter 5 of book 2 Ginny almost left the diary at the burrow? How different the year would’ve been if they hadn’t gone back for it.
    Hope you’re staying safe!

    You do k ow that you can split something into several equal pieces.
    Also if the diary was his first Horacrux why would he put the largest part of his soul into it? Since he wouldn't know if it worked properly or at all, I think it would have had the smallest object.
    Then again he could have used the diary as a way to bring him back, like that was part of the enchantment of the diary
