Hey....I really enjoyed your video....I enjoyed your "spirit" and your "humor".....lots of fun...and I loved your on site spectators...the two Puppy dogs....lol...they make for your best critics LOL....I hope to watch more....Thanks again....LOVED THIS...
Mr Ken from Orlando, Fl
OMG! I can't believe I found this!!! I fell in love when I saw your pop art kitchen on a post on pinterest. You're my hero! It looks fantastic! I too want to decoupage EVERYTHING now that I've learned how to. Thanks for taking time out of your day to make the video
Thank you so much! You made my day! And I'm glad you like my kitchen. (some people on social media really hate it and have no qualms about telling me!)
Thanks so much. Your instructions are brilliant and the chair is gorgeous. Had to watch it twice for a good laugh at your jokes along the way. Love the styling of your video as well!
Thank you for saying so! Some people (who aren't as fun as us) don't like the kitchen, so I appreciate your support!
Love the tutorial and you!! So well done and fun to watch... Thank you for sharing!!!
Wow, thank you Maureen, my new favorite person in the world!
Thanks, I wished I would have watched this earlier before I bought 2 bottles of Mod Podge. I will be returning one. I SUBSCRIBED!!
This is wonderful! Just got new dull, plain kitchen chairs. Now I know what to do with them!
@Phaedrus6 I've used the same technique for a coffee table. Just be sure to let the polyurethane cure a few days after you've applied several layers. It's a little soft at first, but when it cures completely, and you tap your fingernails on it and it feels hard, then it's "done." And then be sure to use coasters.
so funny i love all the little bubbles are the bottom. I'm going to be decoupaging my ikea computer desk soon and this was very very helpful!
@meighantosten Good question. I tried it once and I didn't feel like I was able to get as thick a coat on with the spray varnish, especially at the seams of the poster. That's where you want to make sure there is no poster peeling away from the chair. I paint on extra polyurethane on the edges. I feel like one coat of painted on polyurethane is equivalent to lots and lots of coats of spray. Of course, with spray you don't have brush marks, but I've learned to live with them.
@texandziggy There are many ways to decoupage, and the way I learned from the book "New Decoupage" is just one of them. I like how the wet paper is so workable, and how it seems to soak up the glue. However, I've also used Mod Podge, and for that, I put Mod Podge on the surface, place the dry paper over that, and put Mod Podge over everything.
Genius! Jonathan, how are you not selling these and becoming wealthy? After viewing this I checked out decoupaged chairs on Etsy and found nothing that comes close to what you did here. Seriously, can you tell me if there is a real market for these and who is selling chairs the same quality as what you've shown us here? I will study every second of this video, master your technique and start a side biz. That's how good I think these chairs are. You're a genius.
Looove this so much that am now going to try it. Am guessing decoupage paper will work just as well? Probably won’t have to soak it, if it is papery thin. Absolutely love seeing decoupage and want to try it.
Good question. I've done this on tables, but only coffee tables and side tables where food and drinks weren't on it. Perhaps with a lot more coats of polyurethane, and the high gloss version. (And lots of placemats and coasters.) Actually the place to watch is the edge of the poster, to make sure it is well sealed so it doesn't peel up. Perhaps do a little table or even a piece of wood/fiberboard and test it with foods and drinks. Thanks for watching!
Hi Jonathan, you are fab with your presentation making it fun and inspiring all at the same time. I'm dying to use your ideas... can... NOT wait..!! Brill ;) x
OMG! He is soooooooo Funny!! He should have his own Show on Network TV---Excellent stuff!!
Sorry your poster ripped. I too tried it with a thinner poster, and while it survived the bathtub water, once I got it on the surface, it did not survive the glue. One thin paper that I've used that has worked is laser copy paper, i.e., the paper you get when you photocopy something at the copy store (not inkjet printing at home). It goes in the water for just a couple of seconds, and goes on the surface really well without bubbling. I've done that for decoupaging toilets.
you and your chairs rock! keep on smiling :)
Would be trying it with some classic movie posters, really neat idea. had so much fun watching it you are so handsome and funny
The thicker posters do get bubbles, but because the paper's thick, it's easier to squeegee the bubbles out with wet fingers and a wet brayer. You have to keep a constant watch. One minute there isn't a bubble, and then a few minutes later one can appear. So I watch it until it's dry. But you know what, I have a couple of chairs with bubbles on them and no one notices. It's art. It doesn't have to be perfect!
oooh johnothan you are tres clever and you're right never put a valium in the water - why waste good meds - there's plenty of mothers out there - counting down to summer vacation - ha ha how proud you should be - fantastic video and idea - looking forward to many many more
I really enjoyed your video. I'd love to have you show us how to decoupage kitchen cabinets. I do much better when I see something done first! Thanks!!!
I so love your kitchen! especially the Marilyn poster. Do get bubbles in your poster when you podge them? I used a thinner one because I loved the image and i got little bubbles. So people please get the thicker ones like he mentions in the video. you cant seem them but I know they are there.
THANK YOU!!! This is a really great video! Wish me luck!
Excellent and very professional tutorial! Also inspiring, now I would not sleep with so many ideas flowing. How about covering closet doors? Thanks for sharing! ;)
I'm getting ready to decoupage the top and sides of a nightstand. Your video was very helpful but I have two questions. First, if I use something heavy on the corners of the poster for a few days to flatten it is it still necessary to dip it in water before I apply the poster to the nightstand?
Second, most decoupage tutorials I've seen include applying a layer of glue (ModPodge, etc.) to the top of the poster as well once it's in place and before applying a sealant. Is this step not necessary?
You are excellent...good information, lively and to the point! thank you ❣️
Thanks so much! Yes, closet doors would work, though you'd need a big poster. For big doors, another idea is restickable artwork. You can find them at the muralsyourway site.
Thanks, I'm glad you were inspired!
Love this!! Could I do this to my glass-top coffee table?
Wow thank you! You make me blush.
Love this! I would like to use an original photo to do one of these chairs as a gift. Should I have it reproduced as a regular poster, or made to a banner? (made of canvas)........
Thank so much for this! Loads of great tips. Enjoyed very much. K
@Cupycake68989 Actually, not all posters are created equal. Really thin posters can rip easily. I always use posters that are designated as "fine art prints" when I buy them online. Most museum posters are of this quality. They're thicker. Hope that helps.
Outstanding!!! will have to try this sometime...Very Cool
I'm looking to decoupage my vanity desk and I wanted to use old pieces of the new yorker, can you tell me a good source to find recycled ones? What's the website where you get your fine arts posters?
Absolutely incredible. Thank you.
Sorry for the late response! Yes, I've seen it done on glass coffee tables. In fat, I've seen it done in reverse, so the image is on the back showing through the glass, so you don't have to worry about it coming off.
@porcupinemamma You can get a rubber brayer at any art supply store. Hugs to you!
Thank you! I did get some citristrip and take the poly eurethane off of one of the drawers. I worry about getting it wet cause I heard it would warp the wood. I decided to try and leave the parts I did well and try to redo the top and the drawers which I feel are bad
A rolling pin can work like a brayer and I really really loved this video----Thanks
I want to decoupage a poster onto a coffee table and I'm wondering if I have to use anything special or would the same technique you go through work?
Great video, I love the results :)
Fun stuff. Where do you sell your stuff and what are the price ranges of your work?
Hi I did this with a one piece chair from ikea and a thick music poster but I got a lot of air bubbles, the brayer wasnt much help, whats the best way to avoid this? And any tips on doing this with a one piece chair? Thanks a bunch
Thank you for watching! I really appreciate it
Mr. Ken, thanks for watching my video. Aren't those two puppies the best two spectators? They remind me of the two old men on the Muppets! Their names are Fosse and Gershwin. Anyway, I really appreciate your note. Thanks so much!
Could you use this technique for a dining room table and eat and clean it daily??? Love ur vid - just found u...
Sure ain't my grandma's decoupage! Thank you for sharing. You are brilllllllllliant!
BTW, where would I purchase a braire (not sure of the spelling.)
I think a poster might be easier to work with. A banner might be too thick. Just as long as the poster was on a sturdy enough paper stock that didn't rip. Good luck. Hope that helps.
Hi could you tell me what was the finishing coating you used?
I use Benjamin Moore Stays Clear Low Lustre. It is acrylic polyurethane, matte finish, and there are other brands of it.
Love love love it!
Thanks so much! I have thought of making these to sell, but I would have to sell them for a lot of money to make it worth the time, and I'm not sure about people's price points. If you're able to make it work, good for you! Let me know if you have any questions. Best wishes!
Very nice and your hilarious in that on purpose corny kinda way.love it!!!
you're Amazing!! I love it!!
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!
such a great idea..i cant wait to try this out ;3
OMG! I decoupaged an entire dresser and I HATE it! I am having a horrible time removing it. Can you tell me how to take it off? I used elmers glue. I would probably love it but I did a bad job on the top. It looks horrible. Great idea but ii executed wrong on my end
Could I use a clear wood varnish instead of acrylic polyurethane?
I'm not sure. I've never used varnish, and I don't know the difference between varnish and polyurethane. The polyurethane does bond really well to the paper without warping it.
thank u for sharing this video :)
which glow did u use?
I used regular white Elmer's glue, and then Benjamin Moore Stays Clear acrylic polyurethane, low lustre. Thank you!
what was the name of the artist poster that he used?
Could I use walpaper adhesive?
Thanks Nadine. You're funny!
what is the name of that chair style?
I use Elmer's Glue and Benjamin Moore Stays Clear acrylic polyurethane, low lustre.
Oh no. Everything usually comes off when it's submerged in water, so perhaps if you ran a water hose on it. Once you break through the polyurethane with water, the rest sloughs off with more water. People who have decoupaged cabinet doors and then wanted to change them out did this. Sorry it didn't work out!
When you decoupage what type of glue & polyurethane is best
Cool!
Love it!!
Love it!
Also keep in mind that if you're going to sell it in stores, they would mark it up 100%, so the price to the consumer doubles. But there could be a market for it. Why not?
Amazing!
omg love it! ♥♥
@federicar01 Thanks! I'm sitting on one now!
U said we can use any poster right
$40 for a Vilmar chair from Ikea & $25 for a poster =$65 just to start. Closer to $75 w tax/shipping. Have to sell for $200 to be worth the time and effort. You're right; is that acceptable. Is it what the market will bare? I may try and do a pair and see. I'll let you know.
@meighantosten You should see my decoupaged toilets.
ahh I guess my poster wasn't as heavy but mine did not like the water technique; it ripped!
Thanks so much for your timely reply! I hope it works!!! (Maybe I can send you a photo of the finished project!) :)
@StyleWithASmileTV well to me nothing is more awedome than a fun and colorful room. unless u want it to be all boring and go with the color on everything
That's the IKEA Gilbert chair.
awesomeeeeeeeeeee
I was thinking more like Brooklyn Flea or the like (I'm in New York). I think the hipsters would love them. I know the struggles of trying to get into retail all too well. I sell my product, The You Doll Superhero DIY Kit online but hope to be in retail stores someday. Check it out for yourself and let me know what you think. (pets make great superheroes)
OMG! You are awsome! I think i Love you =o) LOL
But wouldn't it be weird to sit on a chair with a face on it?
Lol when I went to camp I had really short hair for a girl, every time I wash it, after it dries I look like a girl version of Justin Bieber! Eek
I'm serious--and I write scripts!! Think SITCOM!!
Your Welcome BTW..lol
Take Care-
In this video Jonathan you are better Justin Bieber
What a sweet guy. This is my first time watching one of his videos. Very easy to watch and informative.
