So glad I found this today. I've loved Towner and Oregon for 40+ years; Oregon in particular was a favorite of my first wife and mine. Today is the anniversary of her birth, a date I've honored alone since her passing 30+ years ago (she was only 35); this performance brings back wonderful memories of those long-ago days. Thank you for posting it.
I saw Oregon in concert in 1978 and again in 1981. I saw Ralph Towner in a solo concert in 1981 at the Great American Music Hall. For years I would put my headphones on, start an Oregon album and lay down on the floor and just drift on their sounds. Such magical music!
Wonderful recording from Molde jazz 1975 with Ralph og Oregon who are probably somne of the most creative musicians and band i our time. Long life to Oregon and the music of Ralph Towner. Thank you for this video!
In my opinion one of the best film documents of a live performance by a truly style-defining, highly innovative and virtuoso jazz group. The tragic and much too early death of Collin Walcott marked the end of this phase of the group, which in my opinion could no longer match the creative power of this line-up. Many thanks for this contribution on youtube!
Memories of Oregon's 'Winter Light' days! This has great sound and resolution, a reminder how great (RIP) Colin Wolcott was on tabla and sitar. Ralph, Paul and Glen outstanding as always and this music is as timeless as when it was released! Saw them in various formations over the years and met Ralph in Chicago a few years ago at a solo concert at a small club. Love the 70s eurolook of the audience!

This footage is amazing. The quality is so crisp, just like we are flying back in time... or these cats are young again... Some of my music heroes.
This was filmed in Norway … I saw them for the first time in 1975 in California … it was at an old biker bar called the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach … a memorable experience I remember to this day despite the “fine Colombian.” 😉 I remember there were two bouncers at the door checking ID, they looked like they could break you in half like a dry twig, but were the nicest guys … enjoyed a beer with them after the show. Ran into Colin and Paul in the men’s room after the show (after the beers) and Colin was saying to Paul, “it was something about the way she walked” lol. Good times, gone but not forgotten. RIP Colin Walcott🙏🏼
Wonderful memories , I met ralph amd gleen at django's record shop in 1979 in portland OR , the group played a lot at Marylhurst college in portland Music was always beyond what was around then. They introduced such a colorful sound to jazz. Now that I am 61 and far away from oregon, I still listen to them. Thx for the trip back to 45 years ago. RIP beloved collin walcott. you are missed a lot.
They were so open minded and had such an incredible variety of influences and sounds to choose from, I didn't really think of them as jazz; just incredible music with a world of influences woven in, always taking the listener on a cinematic trip, at least that's how it seemed and still does, to me; hypnotic music! Thanks for sharing thise great memories; what a time, when you could go to small venues and for the price of a film, see brilliant originals like these guys, and it's cool that you got to meet those two!
I never had the pleasure of seeing any of them live, but seeing Colin Walcott alive in their best line-up is a special treat. Though an unapologetic fan of jazz and music from Brazil, if I were pressed to assign a label to this, it might be modern 'chamber music'. 40 years in Japan now ... and with literally thousands of mostly jazz and Brazilian CDs in my collection, Oregon's 'Out of the Woods' is my go-to soundtrack when driving through the misty mountains west of Tokyo. Much love and thanks for posting this video.
Tokyo 20 years for me I guess. Saw Towner play when I was 17 in 1985. Oregon and Towner's other efforts were almost the point of driving though the misty alps in my Swiss years.
Standing out how a concert can become a unique magical moment when both artists and audience are capable to let it happen. Amazing show, amazing band, amazing music, amazing audience and an example of confidence, shared risk, communion and beauty.
The magic these faaaaaantastic musicians create in this live ,Is outstanding ,out of this world.they have a great connection with the Spirit of universe
Pretty much self taught unlike his trumpet and guitar. Of course Ralph Towner is a musical genius so I'm not surprised by anything he does including his incredibly prodigious amount of great compositions. He played jazz gigs as a piano sideman while in NYC for awhile. Very much influence by Bill Evans who he loved. His guitar playing is greatly influenced by a piano approach he says too.
Uno de los mejores grupos y propuestas musicales que jamás haya escuchado. Una fusión maravillosa entre Oriente y Occidente. Top. Sublime. Sus álbums Out of the Woods y Roots in the sky están entre mis más escuchados desde fines de los 70s. Beneath an evening sky, otra obra maestra. ¡Maestros!
Excellent quality and great performance of the original band with Collin Walcott, whom I first saw with the Paul Winter Consort and then bought all their Vanguard records as they were released and saw them a few times including opening for Gateway at the Bottom Line.
Many thanks for sharing. These people play the music which is unique and unfortunately not much known. Meanwhile they merit to be known. Personally I have never seen a video with them on stage before, so this is really a pleasure.
I had the album on ECM back in the day...wow what a remarkable albumn , I forget I think in was called winter solstice? Ralph was a remarkable musician
Thanks for sharing this great performance, Oregon was a one of a kind band, w/ a musical personality all its own. 16:16-26 - A Norwegian Rick Beato lookalike on the top right corner. Some really nice footage of mid 1970s Scandinavian youth. There to let the music take them on a journey, together. a journey to be experienced, shared, That is the 'real' purpose of good music IMO. Really cool.
Thank you so very much for this! The first time I saw Oregon was in 1975, at Amazingrace Coffeehouse in Evanston, Illinois (near Northwestern University) and I was absolutely mesmerized. I became a regular at Amazingrace, staying for two sets every night they played.
I've been a fan of Towner, Walcott and McCandless for years and I didn't even know the existence of Oregon until this very day. It was a nice surprise to me, this is truly awesome!! Thanks for uploading it, you made my day :)
alucinante!! no tenía idea que Oregon estuvo en chile. Bueno yo en ese tiempo tenía apenas 2 años.. hoy lo disfruto a través de estas maravillosas presentaciones que hay en internet. Saludos hermano!
All those bright young hippie jazz loving faces looking out optimistically at the vast panorama of their futures are now hitting their 70s many already passed like Collin Wallcot .
Weird photography. Why would you show a guitarist from the back of the headstock? How about a front view, so we can see what he's playing? Same with the bass -- do we really need to see the back of his head?

This is a touching story, man. I wish you all the best. Your friend in music, Bibi
And I'm sorry about your loss of your first wife. May you be comforted and healed.
I saw the original group a few times. This music meant so much to me for 49 years now and lately it seems to be even better than ever.
All Towners stuff seems to get better with age..fantastic catalog.

Great musicians individually...but collectively, this group was beyond great.

They created unique language and space of music. It will remain fantastic contribution to the history of music as a whole.

Magnifique " Orégon " ! ! ! ! ! , Ralph Towner , très fort au piano et ENORME guitariste , merci BibiAudiofil2 .
So GLAD I found this GEM! I had this album in the mid-70s upon its release: am still mesmerized by Ralph Towner's brilliant guitar playing!
an exceptional document of an exceptional band
outstanding music between Jazz, World Music, and Classical Music - balanced in a most fascinating way.
These are such incredible musicians, Paul's oboe is so sweet and angelic, it has that baroque tone.
Fantaaaaaaaaaastic group, immense musicians,One of best ensemble everrrrrrrr, magic music,no other words

Ralph was playing piano before guitar. He only switched to guitar in college!

Absolutely stunning and wonderful. I was so lucky to see them at The Hole Coffeehouse at the University of Minnesota.
Superior, thanks a lot!!!
Thank you! Amazing musicians, friends and thankful I can say that I've been able to record them in the studio. ❤
tell us more, please :)
Excellent quality and great performance of the original band with Collin Walcott, whom I first saw with the Paul Winter Consort and then bought all their Vanguard records as they were released and saw them a few times including opening for Gateway at the Bottom Line.
I love their Vanguard records and the few released at Elektra
@@BibiAudiofil2 My best one is "OREGON" ECM 1983
Mi grupo favorito de jazz... Siempre maravilloso.
Many thanks for sharing. These people play the music which is unique and unfortunately not much known. Meanwhile they merit to be known. Personally I have never seen a video with them on stage before, so this is really a pleasure.
This video is of excellent quality. Not only did I not know this even existed, I didn't know Ralph Towner plays piano either.
I had the album on ECM back in the day...wow what a remarkable albumn , I forget I think in was called winter solstice? Ralph was a remarkable musician
Also Winter Light is excellent (Oregon)
Ralph still is a remarkable musician, writing and performing beautiful, brilliant compositions. He recently turned 81 years of age.
'Solstice' was the name of that album. Incredible album!
And still his ! He just released an album At first light » on ECM (as of March 2023). He is now 83 ! Probably one of his best guitar solo album.

I saw them at the RNCM around 1990.
Gracias por subir esta joya que ayuda a sobrellevar la pandemia
I like this with tabla - ! (with al due reverence for Jon Christensen's ride cymbal)
Do you happen to know what type of cymbal that was he used? Its stunning..I'm thinking maybe a paiste 602?

Great.
So nice to hear Paul's voice when he was young.

My friend. The photograph is just fine. As a matter of fact I get the great music always via my ears I can't see it. That's why I often close my eyes.
Those fantastic musicians, not these, excuse me for my bad english
❤
