  • The Aurora City School District is revisiting the battle over requring masks.
Earlier this week, the school board passed a resolution calling students, staff and visitors to continue wearing masks when classes resume on January 4. However, it also passed a resolution calling for masks to become optional as of January 25.
Alison Dubsky says she and other parents are not comfortable with making masks optional next month. She believes the case numbers and the risks are too high for the kids.
"They're (Aurora school board) in charge of my child's education and they can't get their head around basic science facts and reality," Dubsky told 3News. "So if I can't trust them in something that is so straightforward, that we have the broad consensus of the entire medical community behind, how can I trust them to know what to do the proper research?"
School board members argued that hundreds of other schools across the state are choosing the same option and ultimately, it should be up to the parents to decide.
Aurora City Schools superintendent Mike Roberto gave the following statement to 3News:
"Based on last night’s resolution passed by the Board, we will continue to mask upon our return on January 4, 2022, and will continue to follow the opening plan we have in place which requires our COVID indicators to be lower (under 15 indicators in red) for 14 consecutive days before moving to recommend masking. The Board did pass a resolution for masks to be optional on January 25, 2022, but the Board has the ability to revisit that policy at the January 24, 2022 Board Meeting if our numbers don't improve. Our goal is to provide a safe learning environment where young people can be in the classroom with their classmates and teachers. Our current plan for required masking and the multiple layers of safety we have in place allows us to provide this service to all ACSD families."
Roberto added that because of increased numbers of COVID cases in extra-curricular areas, where masking is not possible, Aurora City Schools has paused all extra-curricular activities, including athletic practices and games, through December 29. The pause of activities could be extended if needed.
