"How did they kill Mami so easily?" -- a frequent question. After all, Mami is the veteran who can fight deadly battles as if she were dancing ballet: kill witches and look cool while doing it. So what happened? Remember that Homura said "this witch is not like the others", before Mami tied her up with her yellow ribbons. Indeed it isn't: it's a witch that has more than one form, a toy-like little jester and that enormous funny-faced worm. Mami didn't know that (and she gave Homura no chance to explain), so she was taken by surprise. Also, she was now, as she said, 'so light, so happy'. She got distracted. She became starry-eyed, dreaming about being a 'magical girl duo' with Madoka, about their happy moments together. And so she was less prepared, less 'there'. Her reaction time went down a few seconds; a few crucial seconds. If she weren't so happy, she might have paid more attention, jumped back when the big worm came near; she might have survived. But in Madoka Magica, happiness can get you killed, because it can make you become distracted and thus weaker. Many shows about magical girls (or boys) fighting evil and being friends also say that 'battle is dangerous, and you can get killed'. But we usually don't pay attention, because 'they always say that'. Madoka Magica says it also, two or three times in this episode. And then it shows you that the danger is real. If you live a life of battles, you can end up killed, like Mami, if you stop paying attention.
Homura didn't pretend to be trapped just to let Mami die. Mami is actually more powerful than her as a magical girl the way Homura is now. Homura wouldn't have been able to fight against her successfully in a fair battle. If anything Kyuubey was the one who let Mami die on purpose.
@STEVE LO They fought in Rebellion and in spite of Mami not knowing her ability she did manage to fight her and even dominated so I wouldn't be so sure time stop is sufficient of a game changer against another magic girl.

"This episode was moving so slowly, then it became fast, it all happened so fast..." Indeed. Some people complain about this. Personally, I like it, because it mirrors what it is trying to say -- that life is nice, but it can be suddenly cut short when you yourself least expect it. This is an episode about transitions: about coming out of the cuddly "cute (magical) girls doing cute things" part of reality and redefining it to include the reality of what it actually is like to be in a world where some people spend their lives fighting horrible abominations. The border between these two phases -- 'happy life' and 'you can really die' -- feels like a sudden change of pace. Just as a real "tragedy-out-of-nowhere" -- why did my wife have to die in that stupid car accident? -- makes you feel dumb, as if life itself had suddenly shifted gears. In this sense, I do recommend paying attention to the ending song, and the animation that accompanies it. In many ways it is representative of the true nature of the show: of growing and understanding that the world is not a happy place, and that things don't work as they 'should.'
"That's it?!?" Yeah, that's it. The hype makes it sometimes feel disappointing, especially if you don't empathize with Mami very much, and if you can guess that she is going to die. Which is why my rule of thiumb is: don't pay attention to the hype, look at the show with a fresh mind, and react to it spontaneously, as your heart sees fit. People are different... To me, it was quite heartbreaking (perhaps because I once knew someone whose personality was very much like Mami's); but to many others it was 'meh'. Different tastes...
I'm glad you have so much interest in our reaction, but it isn't necessary for you to answer all our questions. And I know you put some time into this, so props to you, but many of our questions are rhetorical or are something we can answer ourselves after thinking about the episode for a few hours (we don't instantly understand everything, especially in a show like this). We're really just saying whatever pops into our mind at the moment. Thank you for your comments though :)
Silbido Herz It is indeed my very favorite show. I hope you'll enjoy it too... as you'll notice, sometimes I wax lyrical on my favorite topics or tropes... For instance, I like it very much that the title of Episode 3 is "I'm not afraid of anything anymore" -- as if foreshadowing that losing one's fear means becoming careless, which was Mami's greatest mistake.
"What happened to her body?" Obviously the big worm ate it; we saw this happen while Madoka and Sayaka looked on in utter disbelief. Some people speculate that the big blob of some dark gooey substance that falls next to Homura when she defeats this witch is what remained of Mami's body. Anyway, since whatever remains of Mami's body is in this "parallel dimension" ('labyrinth') defined by the witch, it will simply never return to the real world. This will be discussed in the next episode, by the way.
Part of Mamis wish originally was based on her remaining alone, friendless. Once she accepted Madoka as her friend her life was over. Mami simply got tired of being alone and death was acceptable to her now. To have a friend again cost Mami her life and she knew it would happen.
I only recent saw this mentioned: but if you watch the ending closely, you can see that Homura is the only one turning after Madoka, a hint of what is to come...
Actually I took Mami’s death differently. From her facial expression she seems like she saw it coming she just didn’t dodge away cause she was ready she was happy and satisfied with her life.
As the others said, it's frequent (though not sooo frequent) that people guess what is going to happen at the end of the episode. SF Debris considered the first three episodes to form a single arc, centered on Mami Tomoe; I like to call it the Arc of Innocence, because it's about magical girls as a glamorous heroic activity. With Mami's death, this façade is broken, and the truth begins to emerge; battles that look like choreographed ballet dances will no longer happen, and the new ending song (which you shoud look at someday; it is quite interesting, as is the eerie scene of Madoka running past other girls, towards...?). Now begins what I like to call the Arc of Courage, centered on... another girl, where the show examines what courage is, for magical girls. Mami's theme song, Credens Justitiam ('Believing in Justice', or 'One who Believes in Justice'), is one of my favorites. Rather than jokes about her decapitation (which there are hundreds of all over the internet), I prefer to link here to a little clip of her song, with a little accompanying video about her life. Even though I could see her death coming, I was still taken aback by how it happened. RIP, Mami Tomoe; you will be missed. ua-cam.com/video/dE-QXsqf-9E/v-deo.html
Credens Justitiam is by far my most favorite soundtrack of Madoka Magica. It simply conveys so much about Mami and has such a nice flow, while also staying very close in theme to sis puella magica to convey that Mami is the closest to the ideal of a magical girl.
I wish that Shaft would have made this more... surprisingly xD Cause like 90% of the watchers can dee what's gonna happening. But thanks for the reaction anyway, you're gonna be surprised what will happen in that anime. ^^
