The way that Ashok behaved like his friend, bonding with him and all, and then later all of a sudden would show him his place as a lowlife servant was really disgusting
Shows how the Indian upperclass can never really reconcile with the lower class. Ashok is Westernized enough to care about him but still Indian enough to care about his social position. Pinky is the closest we get to a genuine caring person (and the furthest from a typical Indian) but even she has habits of the upper class (giving him a strange amount of money when she left).
The way I see it is that he doesn't treat Balram like his father or Mongoose did because he had Pinky by his side. He knew Pinky doesn't like this kind of behavior, and he knew in his heart that this is unacceptable way to treat someone, and when she left he got no one but his toxic family that encouraged his bad side. I really like his character as he portrayed how much other people around him can influence his mindset.

The newcomer overshadowed the amazing Rajkumar Rao. A vey good thing which should be appreciated is that there are no songs in the movie. Production design is good. If it is not titled as 'white tiger' and branded with some other name which is apt enough, then it could made a little difference. All and all it's a worth watch.
One thing that gets overlooked is the fact that his rural family has grown to 17 members, which also portrays the sad reality of Indian people who despite having such poor income decide to have a lot of kids which in my opinion is the greatest vicious trap of poverty.

Loved the movie and loved the fact that for the first time, A rated actors like Priyanka Chopra and Rajkumar Rao are not playing the read roles but characters of the book. The story majorly revolves around Balram Halwai who comes from village to city and how his pure intentions has turned ghastardly while being in clutches of his masters and how he stood up for himself and created fate of his own is gripping. Since I've read the book long back, so I'll say that all the major parts of the book has been covered while throwing light to a poor man's fate, or a servant in India. The movie has done justice to the book to a great extent. Reel life Balram has totally done justice to the character of the ficticious novel.
I read the book when I was in school and it was so captivating and amazing that I could never forget Balram. The movie does the justice to every role. It amazed me how a director can actually make us believe that it is not a movie. We engage, we become one amongst them, it feels like we are watching them in our lives. Great movie. Great acting by everyone and great direction.
A tragic tale that seems to purposely shed a negative light on the caste system and the gruesome odds of moving up in society. Barlam himself had to become maniacal to finally break free and get to the top. But the lesson is that that shouldn't be the case in a healthy society.
More than anything, I felt a sense of pride as an Indian, watching this. None of that stereotype, or overplaying Indian ways, accents, mannerisms. It was very real. Finally, an 'India film' that is simply a very powerful statement on humanity that could play in any cinema, anywhere, without having had to sacrifice all that is authentically Indian in this story. Adarsh Gourav plays a very difficult, multi-layered character that puts him on the world map, more than a clear stand-out in the world of 'Indian movies'. Gourav pulls it off like a pro, bringing nuances and facets of the character to life so incredibly well. Priyanka Chopra also does a fantastic job, again with a role that would have suffered portrayal by caricature in the wrong hands. More than justice has been done to an excellent novel by Aravind Adiga.
Many great movies are made in India but they never get the adequate attention they deserve, but this movie is being watched a lot globally which looks like breaking the chicken coop for India Thank you netlfix
The movie was good but it wasn’t perfect. I felt that the 4th act of the film was rushed and didn’t really provide that impact I would have wanted during the ending. I wouldn’t explain too much of this because I don’t want to give out spoilers. The movie also seemed to have dragged a little during the 3rd act which I felt lost a little momentum. On the plus point, cinematography, score and performances were brilliant! I wouldn’t complain if Adarsh Gourav and Priyanka Chopra-Jonas receive Oscar nominations for their work as lead actor and supporting actress. I also liked the original song from the film ( Jungle Mantra by Divine) which might get nominated at the Oscars as well. Overall the movie was good. I would give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 out of 5
I think the ending feels rushed because it’s basically just the epilogue. The movie effectively ends with Balram’s decision. The plot is about creating the conditions for him to break away from the servant mentality. It’s not about what he does afterwards. In fact, I think it’s nice that we are allowed to know what Balram does with the money, another director could just have ended it with Balram screaming at the wheel and leave us with the mistery
Now that you mention it, it was slightly puzzling when Balram refers to Ashok as "my ex" at the end of the movie. I supposed the implication was "ex-master," but then again you won't normally call your former employee/boss just "ex" because that would sound like an ex-spouse or ex-lover. I haven't read the book yet, but maybe the choice of the word was intentional? Balram's English in the email(=narrative voice) is quite perfect, so I don't think the word was there just to indicate limitations in his English proficiency.
"The White Tiger" is a drama film which is released today on OTT platform. The story is based on Aravind Adiga's Booker Prize winning novel. The plot revolves around casteism in modern India. Audience will get a vibe of "Slumdog Millionaire" while watching this film. Being a newcomer, Adarsh Gourav just stole the limelight. Priyanka Chopra Jonas was amazing. I had huge expectations from Rajkumar Rao after watching his performance in "Ludo". I personally felt that he could deliver much better performance here. Ramin Bahrani did a wonderful job with his direction. I didn't read the book so I couldn't compare with it. This movie is well acted, beautifully made and engaging. According to me, "The White Tiger" is a must watch movie.
I really hate the way the movie ended, it was so real, Adarsh wasn't a bad person, he was a good person, but the low life changed him into a bad person, this is so sad, because a lot of real people on indie have the same faith, if you have no money or food, people will act worse than the animal. the grudge will grow on you till the point no humanity will be lifted on you. And just like in real life, if you want something really badly, you can get it, but you will have to make a lot of sacrifices, and here, his entire family and his good part of him was the sacrifice he made.
To be honest I don’t think he became a bad person. He killed his abusive master and now that he’s a boss he treats his workers well. He takes all the blame for any wrong doing his employees make

he'd left his hometown for a better paying job, and in this scene his uniform and cleanliness really stands out amongst the rubble of his surroundings and the dirt on the other man, marking him as a higher-class and outsider. however, the irony is that both the one who seemed to be living in better conditions and the dirt-poor man stuck in worse conditions, still ended up in the same place in the end- taking a shit in the dirt. no matter how much balram tried to escape the 'darkness' and thought that he had done so when he landed his job, in this moment he realises that he actually hadn't escaped poverty at all, he was still just a servant to someone else, and still very much in the darkness. his contempt for the dirt-poor is shown throughout the film as he thinks he is better than them, but after the realisation in this scene, he is shown giving money to a poor man.
There was not a single character in that entire novel I was rooting for. In that vein, I suppose that means there's not a single part of India I'm rooting for.

The man he killed wasn’t totally innocent, he was corrupt, bribing politicians to prevent from paying taxes, doing his father’s dirty deeds. And Ashok did treat Balram like he was beneath him, he just acted like his friend from time to time, which really made Balram angry.

The part where the newspaper shows the family that gets shot kind of made me laugh. But in the end, I guess some sacrifices are made for the greater good. The nephew (I think) got a happy ending too.

Get what you mean. Overall a great job, but for character arc they could have spent more time on that transition period.

The part where the newspaper shows the family that gets shot kind of made me laugh. But in the end, I guess some sacrifices are made for the greater good. The nephew (I think) got a happy ending too.
