  • Karyn Garvin’s talk, “Saving a Dogs’ Life” will appeal to dog enthusiasts from all walks of life. She brings a unique clarity to the distinction between Separation Anxiety in dogs and another condition referred to as Containment Phobia in dogs. The concern is that thousands of dogs die each year as a result of being misdiagnosed and therefore treated incorrectly.
Karyn has been a dog behavior specialist for over 39 years. This talk is based on her most recent book, "Separation Anxiety Versus Containment Phobia: Why is Your Dog Destructive When You’re Gone?”
Karyn Garvin has remained true to her career as a professional dog trainer and behavior management specialist since 1978. Over her long career, she has taught over 40,000 private lessons with dog owners learning how to train their dogs. Karyn has also authored three books on the love and training of dogs. What drives Karyn is her commitment to saving dogs’ lives. It is still true today that a huge percentage of dogs that die in shelters each year are owner-released because of behavioral issues their owners did not know how to manage. She owns her own business: Garvin’s “Divine Dog” Training in Tucson, Arizona. She lives with her girlfriend, their six dogs, six cats and one African Grey Parrot.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I am so grateful that I searched and did again, then found Karyn.
Let me tell you, she is so kind, very educated, and most importantly, keeps me focused. I have so much that I have learned in 2 lessons.
My Sandy, is truly a “feral” pup. She is a terrier and about 1 yr. Being a rescue it’s never truly known.
Karyn’s instructions are clear (I take notes)her lessons have taught one of the most important aspects of training is having the right tools and my cup runeth over with patience.
This is a fantastic XTed Tucson. The very best I have watched ever.
Thank you so very deeply, Karyn.

This is really interesting. I recently adopted a GSD x Collie and we thought he had seperation anxiety because whenever we shut him in a room he finds something to chew (no where near this bad)... luckily he seems to actually be better in the crate?? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Oh wow. I got a second dog to help the first one chillax. That was foolish. They're both crazy emotional & stressed when I leave (they don't care when their papa leaves 🤭) and when they're home alone. Actually the puppy has never been home alone. He howls, barks, cries non-stop until I get home. When I do get back he jumps on me, bites me, piddles on the floor, tries to swallow my hands. It's so upsetting. Thank you for this. I'm definitely looking into your training!

i am so glad that here in germany there is a no kill policy. if the dog does not get adopted they live out their life at the shelter.

Outstanding talk, Karyn. I referred a friend of mine to you (Natasha) because I believe containment phobia is what she's dealing with in her pooch. You are an excellent speaker, as well. Nicely done!

Why do the good useful "TED Talks" get a few views, and the babbling useless ones get millions? This was informative and important.

At the same rate dogs are bred they end up in shelters and put down. Reckless breeding is the problem.

I hired her for 1,600$ to help with reactivity. She spent the first 3 lessons on siiiiit. staaaay down. Now mind you the dog knew all his commands and that was not what she was hired for. She was on heavy opioids and would just sit in our living room chatting and after feeding her and her ego she went home. She was never on time and never spent more than an hour here. She did nothing she was hired for and the dog was EXACTLY the same as before she stepped into our lives. This is a manipulative dishonest person...tread carefully
