I took part im the morning ritual too in Koyasan when traveling there in 2017. It explained how in almost every temple it says "burned down in xxxx and was rebuild" 😝 Edit: stayed in Kumagaiji ryokan
It's an incredibly ancient practice from the Rig-Veda, much older than Buddhism itself. Pretty fascinating that it has been transferred so far from India.
Fire rituals aren't exclusive to India. There are tons of Great Fire Festivals in Shinto... basically Japanese incorporated Goma Ritual and Japanized it as they found any Fire-Related Buddhist Ritual to be too compatible with their own Culture
@@Flymoki13 Shingon Budhhism has transmissions of vajracharyas that were indian and went directly to china from india and then japan or chinese that recieved it earlier from indians also goma is a corruption of homa an almost exacty similar fire ritual which was tantric so is shingon so even though fire rituals are not exclusive to hinduism this one has it's roots and direct transmission from India.
