  • THE FACETIOUS STORIES OF NASSR-EN-DIN-HODJA
NASSR-EN-DIN-HODJA or Nasreddin Hodja is a popular character in the folklore of the Greek, the Turks, the Arabs and other Eastrn people.
    Εxcerpt from the book:
"Both the Persians and the Arabs share this popular type of wise man and, as I have said, claim him as their own, and we encounter him in many ancient popular books of these two peoples, such as the "Thousand and One Nights" in the "Persian Mythology", which is something like the "Halima", and also in the works of famous poets written at a time when the Turks did not yet have literature.
When you ask the Greeks what was the nationality of Stratehodjas, they answer without hesitation:
    - Greek! . . .
They might even add that their grandfather met him because he was a fellow villager! Similarly, the Turks consider him to be a Turk and his home and place of action to be in Iconium, sometimes in Proussa, sometimes in Avri Shechir, etc. The Turkish people even believe that his tomb is in Prussa, and they even demonstrate it! The Persians declare him to be Persian, and the Arabs want him to be Arab.
So, who is this legendary Hodja? He is simply the people themselves, the people of the East, who have created this person in order to share all the folk wisdom. "
