Critical Role C2E121 Animation | Lucien's Oracle Card Reading

- Thank-you for watching!
The audio used in this video does not belong to me, it belongs to the cast of Critical Role. I did edit it to remove some dice rolling and silences, and tried to take out the burps from Sam but Audacity can only do so much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I make no money from this video.
Turn on subtitles for a good time.
Program used: Krita for the art, iMovie for editing
Fun facts about this project! :
The first frame originally read “Hey everyone, I just got into art school and am feeling super inspired , and wasn’t this scene just amazing!?” but uh,, that was six months ago lmao
And then the finale aired yesterday so……. ;-;
There are plenty of hidden details, see what you can spot!
For example, I did each card in a slightly different way to reflect Molly/Jester making them at different times: an inky oily painting for History, watercolour for Tyrant (I head cannon that Molly’s handwriting is crud because no memories- it’s on purpose!) and a pencil drawing from Jester.
This was a weird project for me to not only get obsessed with but also finish, seeing as I both: never finish stuff, and: specifically don’t draw human faces bc I can never get them right the second time….
But I guess that’s the power of an incredible DnD moment!
Like mentioned before, I did this over six months, so really let’s call this a “how many times can I draw two characters differently” challenge.
PS Molly’s tattoos and accessories aren’t there because I forgot to draw them but also let’s say I headcanon Lucien using a glamour to cover them up and sold the jewelry!
Much love, stay safe, and is it Thursday yet? (heart) - Розваги
"Can't blame the cards, you made 'em, motherfucker!"
Mollymauk, inside Lucian's subconscious
I like to think that's at least part of the reason Lucien didn't sleep, Molly was just running around inside his head and banging saucepans together.
"I'm not resting because of you, you not rest 'cause of me!" *clangclangclang!*
@@TraineeHerothis is 100% something Molly would do and I am living for it
@@skylark7921 He'd probably be buck naked, too
@@TraineeHero oh absolutely. Maybe a strategically placed gaudy tapestry, or maybe not who’s to say
@@TraineeHero With his omelette- covered junk just swinging, dripping rest of the eggs and whatnot. Sorry for the image, but that's a first thing that came into my mind.
I love Artagan helping her out by showing “3” for how many cards Lucien is supposed to pull
Thankyou- that pause was just long enough that I thought our girl could use some help 😅
I can imagine Sprinkles sitting on his shoulder showing 3 fingers . XD
That was an immediate like on the video from me!
I love the look on his face
“Facing you is death.” How true that was.
She had the power to make Gods, of course she would have the power to meandering with fates
XD
Yet it was also rebirth.
I got genuine chills when she said it because I realized it too.
Especially since Lucian's whole life is made up of death and rebirth.
@@CatCheshire Artagan isn't a god though, and Sehanine literally killed the Cult of the Traveler
Jester was facing Lucien when they did the card reading, she also did the final blow in their last battle. She was his Death card.
And yet when Lucian died, Kingsley was born. In the language of tarot cards, Death symbolizes a great change in the person's life. All the dogma and crap about the death card and number 13 being unlucky is a load of horse dung.
I got chills reading this
Thanks for the spoilers dude
@@naru3290 It's your own fault for looking in the comments, so don't blame them. You know the rules, look in the comments at your own risk!
@@naru3290 Why were you reading comments?
It's scary how accurate this prediction actually was
fate is funny like that sometimes. Jester is my favorite character of this campaign and I enjoy them all but she has a thing about her and how Lura plays her that makes her stand out.
When you think about it, Molly had an accurate prediction for Jester early on too, with "A Destiny Forged". There are other things that I mentioned in another comment on another video, but the stuff with Artagan at the volcano was really where that prediction started to come into full bloom.
Honestly my head Canon with how many crazy stunts she pulled is that eventually, by a combination of him getting bored and actually starting to believe she's a god of tricks, Arty hands the mantal of the traveler to jester and she becomes an actual god within the Pantheon.
Crazy how jester is the one that kills him
It's like she knew 😁
@@kirstylister1341 JESTER KNEW THINGS JESTER KNEW THINGS!!!... She was just brilliant... AND she saw into the futur... And she was basicaly a GOD!

"Some people think that death means a rebirth..."
On so many levels this came true. Matt must have planned for this to come back, he must've.
The script writers were on point this camapign
@@PyrotechNick77 yes they really thought about every hour!
I’m pretty sure it was Talesin who came up with the alter ego of Kingsley. The body of Molly was revived, but who came back wasn’t Molly or Lucien, but someone completely new.
A total rebirth
if I remeber right the cards were pulled at random in real life during that moment. I'm pretty sure there was a dice roll connected to a chart laura had, hence why she was so in awe with the predictions.
@@1rotzy Just want to point out that, to Lucien, the cards ended up true as well. Him absorbing the city was a kind of "rebirth" to him. It was casting off his previous form and becoming something better
“Facing you is death”, she was facing him and she was the one who killed him, I’m always so surprised of how accurate that reading was
"And now I've thrown him off his rhythm." - John Mulaney - JJ Bittenbinder
Lmao Lucien, freaked the f out, just yeets the cards out into the snow and runs back to the Tomb Takers "STREET SMARTS!"
*Picks up a threshold crest and throws it*
"yOU WANT IT?! GO GET IT!"
Artagan: "I was over on the bench!"
Fjord in his protective state: "So you saw what happened and you did nothing?"
Artagan: "Yeah cause I was sitting over on the bench."
Too f'ing perfect. Cue the gif of Matt Mercer saying "I love Dungeons and Dragons!"
Cue me saying that along with him!! ☺️☺️🤓
Thankyou 🤗
I think the thing I love the most about this sequence, even more than how terrifyingly accurate the prediction ended to be, is how the ambience gradually changes alongside the reading. At first it's all fun and game, clearly Jester has no idea of what she's doing and this is just to pass time... But when she the second card is drawn, and it's the tyrant, something changes, it becomes accusatory and Jester engages serious mode. And then Death is drawn, and every thing is super tense. It's a threat. Even as Jester is pointing out that Death in Tarot means rebirth, it's clear that she's not thinking about Lucien's rebirth and he knows it... And he's scared.
mhmhmhm, such a good scene
And her clear ineptitude at the beginning shows that it’s not an act. Not the tricks Molly pulled, but a straight, honest reading.
And then Jester was like: "And now I'm in your head."
"oh hey molly!"
Woth her Message spell, that's definitely both a promise and a threat.
What makes Lucien such a compelling and great final antagonist for me isn’t only the fact that he’s essentially a twisted corrupt Molly, but that the party takes the time to know him. To understand some what where he’s coming from and what kind of person he is compared to Molly, even if it was through the Nein being held against their will. Lucien is still an evil bastard, but he’s a person with goals and moments of weakness like everyone else. We would have never gotten this moment if the party didn’t decide to try to understand their enemy while they had the chance. Stuff like this is awesome to see in D&D
Too many people focus on the chance card reading of 'facing you is death.', but the 'Present' is far more important, symbolizing the constant battle of control between Lucian and Molly.
All three of the cards were amazing, but the 2nd one feels the most important to me.
This is why I'm thinking Matt knew what numbers he wanted to pick, and the rest was just theatrics. Not that it's a bad thing, it still made for a great moment, just that it's reproduceable.
You never know with these things: I was running my own game years ago, the party found themselves in a very very high stakes poker game that they lost, without any money left one of my players decided to gamble his soul, my villain accepted and was prepared to chat but I just playing drew a full house, my player drew 4 of a kind . Sometimes, strange occurrences happen
A good tarot reader doesn’t need to slight of hands the cards. Every card has layers of symbolic meaning. A good tarot reader first reads the person they’re working with and weaves a story from the cards in front of them. The cards are always poignant because the story teller makes them poignant. Props to Laura
I love how you made the “Death” card!!
Thankyou so much! I really wanted to shock Lucien, why not have him see literally his own death 😆
Thankyou very much Tahlia. I was so impressed -i can't begin to imagine all the work that went into its production.
Donald
I straight up laughed when I saw that card
Using Molly's coat for the Death card was genius!
Foreshadowing usually doesn’t happen like this is dnd but god damn it’s amazing when things line up perfectly with the last couple of episodes
The simple choice of Lucien using Jester's dress works volumes! It accents Jester's disarming charm by making Lucien approach her. It demonstrates Lucien's brazen confidence in his using her dress as a table. It even created a dark background to contrast with the colorful cards later on. Very skillful move.
Thankyou very much! Initially I did it because I figured a blue background would look nicer that just boring grey snow, but it does also work for the characters like you said, esp to accent Lucien’s boldness so it turned out better than I’d planned ☺️☺️
I absolutely love the detail of Jester's arm popping up from behind Caleb at the beginning, it captures her charming personality perfectly!
Thankyou so much! I remember in the ep when she spoke up a few comments were made like “oh my god, Jester just appears out of nowhere into the conversation!?” And thought it’d be funny to actually have that 😅
I love that he puts them on her dress because they're sitting in the snow.
You made me laugh with Artagan, cry with the death card, and awestruck by how you used the color. Amazing work.
By the Light, what praise!!! Thankyou 🥺🥺🥺
@@tjmakes_ by all means, thank you for putting in months of effort!
Wait wait wait… in the final battle, it was always Lucien’s hand that went against his will when the party tried to remind him of who he once was. Could that twitch have been a hint that Mollymauk was listening?
In general I think anytime lucien reacted funny (a random laugh , a sudden feeling to not go as hard on the 9, his desire all along to have them follow him) was a hint towards mollys memories.
Molly was in there all along. It's why after Lucien's ascension he couldn't remember why he kept the M9 alive for so long.
I also wonder if it's a subtle nod to Taliesin's hand tremor.
If you listen, you can hear Sam whisper "he's in there!" excitedly during that part.
It's been a year since I commented, but I've read the Nine Eyes of Lucien and I can confirm that it is in fact Molly who made Lucien twitch. Throughout their travels with the M9, Molly was speaking with Lucien in his head.
This animation is great! it's only missing a picture in picture of Tallesin losing his mind because he remembers what all the cards mean when the numbers get rolled.
In my mind's eye, Taliesin going nuts over the Tarot reading is the spirit of Mollymauk floating over Lucien's shoulder jeering and cheering.
The little twirl as Jester sat down on the snow was the sweetest touch!
I always find it amazing that everything adds up. The death card usually means a change or a new beginning in someones life to be exact and when Lucien died, Kingsley rose and began the new life.
Jester is a legit tarot card reader! And you have depicted the moment so very beautifully. Long may he reign
Actually Caduceus was right next to her (not physically cause social distancing) telling her what each cards meant and she went from there.
Every time I see this, I just sob. When it happened in-game, I just kept crying "MOLLY! MOLLY!"
0:27 I'm laughing so hard at Caleb's thoughts in the captions. You damn blueberry...
I watched this moment live. I have never gotten chills so intensely in my life. The dice told a story that night, and jester (Laura) was their instrument
The Somnovum Arc was one of my favorites in all of C2, and this moment even more so. I was already excited to see how Lucien would interact with Jester’s reading with like, the metaphorical specter of Mollymauk all around them. Then the instant the Tyrant card was pulled everything shifts in tone, that random dice roll worked so well with the story, and Jester’s change in tone perfectly compliments it. And then the death card is even better I remember standing up and breaking out in giggles it was perfect. An Iconic moment that made me feel the actual magic of the story, and it’s so cool to see it visualized. Also those card designs are beautiful!! Thank you!!
I just realized, watching this, that Luciens plan was a sort of rebirth as the city. The randomly drawn card turning out to be such a great foreshadowing for Lucien's rise and fall, alike.
The fabric is so detailed with lines and how you had it move with the motion. It added a wonderful aspect to the video.
Thankyou! Future animation swill actually be more detailed/ higher frame rate, so hopefully they’ll look even better 😊
The Tyrant card??? With the color symbolism??? TOO GOOD
1:10 I like how the traveler is just behind Lucien, holding up three fingers as if Jester needed divine intervention to get the number of cards right.
I know Tarot is all vague BS that has meaning projected on it by the one who's getting the reading... but seriously, show me ANY sequence of cards from Jester's deck that would have been more perfectly fitting and prophetic than that.
ON top of the fact that she said "Facing you is death" and she fucking killed him in the end
@@zach1972 just tried to like your comment and accidently un-liked it because I had already liked it months ago.
@@Stephan-wf1ec Thanks king
I remember after this sequence the whole table was freaking out about how perfect that reading was. (the card depended on Matt rolling a D-20 so it was completely random). Taliesin was so proud of Laura.
If they had written this reading, in a script, it wouldn't have been so perfect. Amazing animation!!! Loved Artagan there to help Jester up!!!
watching this one again after the nine eyes of lucien book and knowing he had a full mental breakdown over the cardreading is so cool
I have interest tarot cards and reads. This was the most interesting use of it in D&D! And the universe told Lucien's fate and The Mighty Nien saw it through.
Als Jester helped out with the last card.
And the fact that Laura didn't choose any of these cards. She rolled for them!
@@xAlecto It wasn't even she that rolled. It was Matt
its so cool that Matt interpreted the tarot card readings and interwoven it in the story.
I think one of my favourite parts of this moment is Tal reacting to it. He's so proud!!
This animation is beautiful too!!!
What an awesome interpretation of this scene! Also, thank you for your extra work on the captions-- it definitely enhances the experience.
Thankyou!! It was surprisingly fun adding them in 😂 (also, fantastic username 😉)
The addition of the Traveler holding up three fingers is SO GOOD 🤣
"Dreams are the mind testing its limits....... discovering its potential." -matt mercer (the somnovem)
This animati feels like a dream I can get lost in... So beautiful, congrats
Quite possibly my favorite non-combat scene in the entirety of campaign 2. IT WAS TOO PERFECT!
It's crazy how they make all sense they can make.
1. Flying tower is Aeor, from remnants of which he gets power.
2. Two dragons fighting is obviously Mighty Nein and Luciens group.
3. Death is self-explanatory.
The two dragons could also be Molly and him fighting over this body. At lest that's how I interpreted it at first.
These clips are basically passive aggressively saying
“I will rain Hell fire upon you!”
I will say this, out of all of the Mighty Nein, Jester is the most unsettling of the group cause of how disarming she is.
SPOILERS AHEAD DO NOT KEEP READING IF YOU DONT WANT TO BE SPOILED.
I know everyone’s talking about how perfect the “facing you is death” part was, but the part after it - “death isn’t necessarily a bad thing, sometimes it’s a rebirth” - is absolutely perfect because mollymauk was reborn
Often CR animations are fun looking doodles, it's not often we see ones with beautiful detail as well.
man ive gotta say how much i love the arts for the cards, especially death, its strikingly... honest. it stands out from the other in that it doesnt feature the classic card symmetry its so singular while still including a nod to the life that comes from death.
Thankyou so much ☺️ actually, the idea of having Molly’s grave as the art for the Death card was a big part of me deciding to undertake this project! I figured dear Jester had a rather sheltered life, so losing Molly would have been especially traumatic.. so nothing fancy for his card/Death card, just the stark truth 😔
@@tjmakes_ i think you've done a really good job of capturing the deafening silence and overwhelming simplicity of the truth about death.
I originally saw this animation back around ep~40. It means SO MUCH MORE now that I've caught up to the present.
After the finale this is even more perfect holy cow-
that was such a beautifull moment... the animation too! omg it looked so good
I have captions almost perma-turned on. What a joy these were. xP
The hand twitch, though.
THE HAND TWITCH!
😳😏
This is awesome and I think that was such a bone chilling on point scene. My head canon is that jester went on to be a fortune teller.
I adoooore how you have Jester's eyes glance at Lucien's hand twitching and then back up. The timing was perfect
Thankyou so much! That’s my favourite detail that I added into this exchange- Jester is so much smarter than she lets anyone see and she definitely noticed 😉☺️
Just finished reading the book, brings so much perspective to the final episodes and adds so much,
I miss molly :(
Love all the small details in the eyes during the readings
This is amazing! Laughed at the Artegon part, and great facial expressions too
Nice touch with Artie holding up 3 fingers.
Shout out for the closed captioning. It was delightful :)
Oh yes... He had a dream. He became a Tyrant for it. And then...
That scene, this episode, all of that was just perfect. I trully can't believe it was so good.
Your expressions in this are amazing! You did a really good job with the subtleties of what the slight change of a mouth or eyebrow raise can do!
I WAS FINE UNTIL FIGURING OUT THE DEATH CARD WAS MOLLYS GRAVE, That's when the tears came flowing.
😈😚💙
That is amazing!
Gives such life & visual representation to the narrative. Favourite part is the flicker in Lucien’s eyes at the tarot card reading. And the detail of the cards at the end. When is the next one coming & what will it be?
Thankyou so much! I’m working on getting my art looser and more expressive, and Laura Bailey’s voice and acting for Jester is perfect for practicing that 😅
The next one will be sort of a “levelling up compilation” remembering where the M9 started from, and the badass moments they’ve had, all set to what I think is a very fitting song 😉
It’ll be about as long, more frames but less rendering, so probably still a bit of work to come!
Thankyou again 🤗 💕
Honestly, this whole scene was just so perfect.
The captions are brilliant

I love how Cadeucus, on a whim, rolled for Divine Intervention, and fulfilled the interpretation of the Death card, for his original character of the campaign. This is what makes Dungeons & Dragons so great. You can't make this stuff up. The dice tell the story, with the characters acting the story out.
Highlights of this:
Jester's little twirl in the snow as she sits down. It's perfect.
In the captions: (Beau: activates you-wanna-go-regard-mode)
Molly's coat on the Death card. Chills.
Amazing, thankyou for your attention to my lil details 💕 🤗
The rebirth is such an amazing quote, knowing things now!!
Facing you is DEATH
Jester: I'M DEATH, STRAIGHT UP.
your quite good and i love your interpretation of Molly's deck
Gosh the facial and body expressions are so emotive and natural I loved this so so MUCH
Laura Bailey was so on point with Campaign 2. Jester really stole the whole show, multiple times. I can't wait for the animated series to get that far, it's going to be so amazing.
I love that the caption says, 'speaks in clanging'
This was awesome and a great example of how fun this game can be it all comes back around in the end.
This is stunning!! You captured the emotion of the scene so expertly~
😍💙❤ loved how you did it, the expressions and subtle things 😁
Your art is amazing! And thank you for the close ups of the cards at the end, they're beautiful!
i remember shitting myself right alongside talyson when this happened live.
Its fantastic. Thank you! the tarot card reading parts are my favorites.
This is absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for this -- beautiful art and animation, and the little nuances are so thoughtful! I can't wait to see more from you.
What an amazing animation!! I love the colors, the expressions, and the artstyle!
Beautiful animation! The small bits, the soft smiles and tilts of the heads, make it for me! Thanks so much for creating and sharing this with us! :)
Oooh!!! That was so good!!! I love how you drew everyone, I love how you did the motion of all of it, I love how you drew their expressions, and I absolutely love your tarot cards!!! All of this was amazing!!!
That was an amazing animation. So detailed! And I love how you actually have backgrounds and colored everyone to make them stand out.
This was very well done. I hope to see more animations from you. Especially if they are critical role related.
Beautiful, wonderful drawings. Very powerful scene and you've brought it to life spectacularly! It's just fucking crazy to me that they actually rolled for these cards and not only did they match what had happened, but what was to come! :O
Well done! My favorite part was the facial expressions ^.^ keep that skill ~ it’ll serve you well
This is my favorite Critical Role animatic
I don't know why but every time I watch this i just think "facing you is death" then the man gets killed by one of the members after she finishes saying it
Closed captions were great! I am a hearing person but I thought it gave a good sense of the mood and style of the scene!
Please make more!!! This is one of the best animations I have seen. Love your style
Thankyou so much, that really means a lot to me 🥺🥺🥰🥰 I’ve already started the next one, and it’s semester break starting this week so I’m looking forward to getting a lot done 😁
"Facing you is death"... Jester is facing him. She deals the final blow against Lucian, the Neo-SN. Something must die in order to be reborn. Lucian dies and Molly come's back. They found Caduceus in order to 'bring Molly back". He assists Jester with his grave channel divinity and she slays Lucian with it. Caduceus is the one that 'brings him back' with Divine Intervention. Some things just write themselves.
Wow! All the little details in this are amazing, from arty's little appearance to the designs of the tomb takers, to say nothing of the expressions on lucien & jester. Absolutely phenomenal work!!
You’re too kind! Thankyou so much! 😊😊*socially distant hug*
I loved the backgrounds. Especially the transition from nightsky to daybreak behind Jester. Beautiful animation!
Thank-you 😊😊 ((definitely not any symbolism about Lucien being in darkness and Jester being in the light 🤭))
Lovely illustration skills.
