It’s definitely multiple reason. For me, fighting game is a new hobby of mine. I just started fighting games for about 1 year. When I saw UNIC, I was hesitant to get it. I was trying to look for content of the game and see if there are any character in details tutorials and anything where they talk about fundamentals of the game. For example, for the first fighting game, I chose was DBFZ. One of the obvious reason is the name Dragonball. But second, there were a lot of content where I can find people talking about specific characters, where people talk about fundamentals (such as neutral, blockstrings, and etc. - and although these implies into all fighting games - this is what attracted me to play the game). When I was looking at UNI, I was sure if it would be something I would enjoy and at the time, I wanted to learn fighting game’s fundamentals. I found combo videos and some tutorials from someone who talks about to an audience who has been in fighting games for a long time, so I didn’t know how to continue from there. This is why I was hesitant to play the game. After learning fighting game’s fundamentals, I came back to this game and I really enjoy it.

tbh i don't know why it's not as popular. as an undernight fan i know we have a strong fan base so it hard for me to think about why it's not as popular as other games like blazblue.

The real, honest reason? It's a sprite game. The last sprite games to make it work were BlazBlue and Skullgirls, both of which had other specific factors going on for them, and both still massively struggled against juggernaut 3D model competitors. Similar thing with Disney films really - people agree that the 2D ones look spectacular but they won't show up for a new one - and that's friggin' Disney.
Modern anime-style games succeed far more by using 3D models that affect 2D, rather than being actually 2D - see Guilty Gear and stuff like Genshin Impact. I can't tell you precisely WHY that's the case but it's very consistently so.

I think this is definitely a factor but for me this would never be the reason and I only just picked it up this weekend. The first time I tried it, I don't really know what put me off. I think it was just a new property to me and I was more interested in devoting more gaming time into Street Fighter versus spending time in something I'd never heard of. If you're familiar with the FGC, you know games will typical lose players pretty fast unless it's a mainstay title, so I also knew I'd be learning the game only to basically not be able to play against anyone. I'm an animator who prefers to work in and watch 2D for games and films/tv so I never really had a problem with that aspect.

Some friends I tried to get into it said that the art aesthetic wasn’t really it for them and that they didn’t resonate with any of the play styles. My grappler friend wasn’t too into Wald and the other friend likes Elt but feels that her playstyle was too tedious.

Even I think that the art style is kinda boring
