This is a very pleasant surprise. I haven't watched Doctor Who since it aired, I think I'm honestly a little scared to rewatch it because I loved it so much and I'm worried it won't hold up. What do you mean by “since it aired”? New episodes currently are airing, with the 2024 Christmas Special coming out next week. As for the quality of the past few seasons vs. earlier seasons in the relaunch vs. older Who, that is a lengthy discussion.
I was not confused about this episode because I knew the show from my childhood. I was more interested is checking how well they were representing the character. By the way, 7:44 the first episode of Doctor Who ever, was in November 23, 1963. Nobody was paying attention to the show because everybody was watching the news about the hit on JFK. In order to get the show off the ground, they had to re-air the first episode and the second on the following week.
And with that, boys and girls, Mary is now a Whovian. Welcome, Mary, you have SUCH a journey ahead of you. I didn't really get into Who a lot until coming across an episode that was further down the line. But actually sitting to watch that 1 episode got me hooked. I backtracked and became a proper Whovian.
no i don't think she's a Whovian yet, she only watched 1 episode. Personally once she hits episode 8 is when i think determines if your a Whovian or not.

Just an early thing to point out - it might be worth getting hold of an episode map (for continuity with things like the spin offs (if you decide to do them) and the "minisodes" which i don't know if they're on the blu-ray but are on YT. The first minisode to watch is called Born Again and should be watched between 1x13 and the christmas special The christmas invasion. They designed the revival (it's not a reboot) so that the lore is explained as you go along, so don't worry about being confused initially. Hope you enjoy the journey!
I saw the very first episode back in the 1960s. Those Police Boxes used to be a fairly common sight in the UK. The style of the TARDIS was especially common in London.
Hope you stick with it, As others have suggested there are some s0-so episodes in this season, and in retrospect this was one of them. But there are some great things to come. Things will become clearer as you progress, but as you can imagine the showrunners are in no hurry . I have been watching since episode 1 in 1963 and some myteries still remain ...

I've been watching Who since the mid 1970's (It started in 1963.. the day President Kennedy was killed in the USA.) and I personally guarantee that you will LOVE THIS SERIES! ❤ In the first reboot season there are a couple of "silly" episodes, but they were just getting the feel for New-Who.. and it gets SO MUCH BETTER. You will be on the edge of your seat one week and crying your eyes out the next. You might want to consider doing 2-3 episodes per reaction because it's going to take many years to get caught up. EDIT: Forgot to mention, DON'T WATCH THE NEXT TIME'S at the end of each episode.. it contains SPOILERS for the next episode! I have no idea why they did this.

This makes me a little sad you stated with the "modern" series, but as they say better late than never.

I was lucky enough in the mid 70's and early 80's to see the 3rd, 4th and 5th Dr on PBS (public broadcast system from local colleges). Living way out in the country I would have to go turn the antenna to even get a fair video to watch. Most episodes were usually in a series of 5 parts 30 minutes each. The new shows are an hour or some movie length episodes but they are good too )
Oh this is exciting. But as a word of warning - for some reason there’s a subset of the Dr Who community that seem to take joy in giving spoilers. So be careful about reading chat unless you have someone checking and removing spoilers first.
@ there’s a few that seem to just plain not care that they’re spoiling - they seem to think that it’s more important that the viewer gets told all the plot lines ahead of time so that there’s no chance that they overlook or misunderstand anything and get caught unaware later. (Even though that’s half the fun of Dr Who for most people)

Don't worry, you don't need to have seen the 'Classic Who' to understand 'New Who', it'll explain everything you need to know as you go(heck u don't even need start w/ the beginning. MY introduction to new Who was starting with season 3, I didn't watch seasons 1 and 2 for a while). So a fun fact bout the TARDIS noise, it was created by dragging a key over piano wire (and some pitch altering and splicing of the sound).
Yay! A new Doctor Who reactor! I think you'll love it -- Christopher Eccleston, who plays the Doctor, is charming as heck. His casting was a stroke of genius that literally saved this franchise, which had been off the air for years. The entire cast of this return season was so strong. The Expanse is what you'd call "hard science fiction", basically meaning that on the spectrum between "realistic, could actually happen in our future" and "pretty much fantasy, but in space" it's quite far to the realistic side. Doctor Who is about as far to the softer side as you can get--but it can still be very clever about it.

William Hartnell had arteriosclerosis that affected his ability to perform. He died nine years after leaving the series.
Not cancer, Mr William Hartnell had Arteriosclerosis which he ultimately died from in 1975 at 67.

Don't worry, you don't need to have seen the 'Classic Who' to understand 'New Who', it'll explain everything you need to know as you go(heck u don't even need start w/ the beginning. MY introduction to new Who was starting with season 3, I didn't watch seasons 1 and 2 for a while).
So a fun fact bout the TARDIS noise, it was created by dragging a key over piano wire (and some pitch altering and splicing of the sound).

Yay! A new Doctor Who reactor! I think you'll love it -- Christopher Eccleston, who plays the Doctor, is charming as heck. His casting was a stroke of genius that literally saved this franchise, which had been off the air for years. The entire cast of this return season was so strong. There's a lot to learn about the Doctor's history and what exactly they are. I can't wait to see you discover the wonder. Enjoy!

Welcome! Only a dozen more seasons or so and you can get fully immersed in the endless "Best Doctor" "Best Companion" debates. I've been watching (and going to conventions) since the Tom Baker days. He was the Fourth Doctor, '74-'81. There were four more following him, then the show went on hiatus, then it was reborn with Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth with the episode you just watched. We're on the Fourteenth now. Have fun!
I’ve been watching Doctor Who since the Fourth Doctor-Tom Baker- in the mid 80’s. I am finally watching the “classic” Who from the beginning and just about to catch up to where I began all those years ago. It has been a long and wonderful journey for me. Yours is just beginning. The Expanse is what you'd call "hard science fiction", basically meaning that on the spectrum between "realistic, could actually happen in our future" and "pretty much fantasy, but in space" it's quite far to the realistic side. Doctor Who is about as far to the softer side as you can get--but it can still be very clever about it.
