@@jerryhopper1685 it's a hot take providing what happens before our eyes, but originately these regions Russia is occupying are russian-speaking lands who asked the Ukrainian governement for their independance/being rattached to Russia, exactly like Crimea did, but Ukraine refused. While it still qualifies as a violent invasion, the (official) primary goal was freeing russian civilians. Therefore, they can't exactly bomb everything and kill everybody. Unlike USA in middle east, or Israel in Palestine, or, well, you know who, they're trying to incorporate the lands they invaded, not annihilate them. And that, the Ukrainian government knows it. They know they can use russian civilians as human shields. They've actually been doing it for a couple decades, way before the invasion. Putin actually offered a peace treaty, an immediate end of the war in exchange of the already russian-speaking, already independantist counties, but Ukraine refused, claiming that the referendum that showed these area wanted to join Russia were rigged (and maybe they were. I'm not pro-Putin, I'm trying to be objective. Honestly, all I care about is that we avoid a nuclear war. Maybe we should ask the local civilians again and make sure no one rigs the referendum, instead of fanning the flames.
