How did people not know he was British? He sounds almost straight up British on Children's Story. Later on he started to pick up the NY accent.

I love Slick Rick! He’s such a kind, giving person. He’s *AAAAALWAYS* by Fine Fare Supermarket by Baychester Avenue (where I lived for some years) and 233rd Street in The Bronx, giving out $100 bills. I’ve never been lucky enough to get any money from him, but he and my cousin are really cool and I chit chatted with him a few times or walked by his house and saw him or his mom. He’s really down to earth. Really lovely, cool, mellow guy. I’ve loved him since I was a child living in Jamaica and used to listen to The Ruler’s Back and The Art Of Story Telling, back when I hadn’t a clue that we’d become neighbours! Truly a Legend. ♥️🙏🏾

I'm glad he corrected the fake info that's been floating around for decades saying he was brought up in Brixton when in fact he was from Mitcham
They used to say Tooting but when you check it Tooting and Mitcham are next door to one another. In fact its one whole straight road from Brixton through Tooting, Colliers Wood straight into Mitcham. All my S.London dons stand up

@@N1NJAKIDD You can go that way but if you cut across to Oval Station its one straight road (it runs parallel with the route you're talking). I take this route on the regs 😀

Want to know a mind fuq...If you listen closely he always MCs in a British accent when in the early 80s, and 90s and early 00s. A lot of UK Rappers did so in an American accent.
He rapped with a half British/American accent. The way he pronounced O's in words like block/cop/shot was American.

His accent is purely American but the way he pronounces certain words you can definitely tell there's some British in there. When at 13:43 he said "2019 hiphop" his British accent when he says 19 is pretty prominent.
I'd still consider the guy American but it's great knowing he originally came from Britain.
