    I really liked this series. I have all the issues but I still hope Titan reprints this stuff eventually. Great video!

      oh! Good haul on getting them all on hand. Definitely a hard one to track down these days!
      I totally agree with you - Fingers Crossed that Titan catches the hint and see's value in doing that and puts these back in press in an omni or something!
      Thanks for positive feedback!

      Glad you liked it! Yep this is definitely one of those series that's just kind of out there but not often seen at all. I covered an entire con this weekend in Toronto and did not see a single one....ugh...

      It’s an amazing piece! I was trying to think back to what Bisley cover stood out to me the most when I was filming this and I think it’s likely his Terminator work he did - likely because that was probably the first time I saw the art and took the time to identify the artist.
      This cover however is simply stunning. I’m sure this is going in my “to be signed” pile.

    Oh yeah this is interesting!
    I've been wondering for such a long time about this series but I can almost never find ANY information or any issues at all. So thanks for doing this 😊
    Issue #1 has the same cover as a Swedish copy of Savage Sword has, so that's where I got to know about this series as it's credited inside.
    If you do get to meet that dude, you've got to make a video of it ;)
    And tell him to visit me in Sweden so that he can sign my copy as well ;)

      No problem! I'm glad I took the time to read through these and get the pleasant surprise! The cover of this one is the same as the Swedish copy of Savage Sword?!? That's awesome!
      Here's hoping someone over at Titan get's the idea to include these in an omni or something!

      Well in Sweden both the original series and Savage Sword was released as just Conan the Barbarian, and I picked up a copy recently with that awesome front cover and inside it was credited to the artist and that it was taken from Conan the Savage.
      Hey, tweet that to Jim Zub or Fredrik Malmberg, they listen!

    I did not get into CtB, SSoC, or the other conan comics until about ten years or so ago, so I did not experience the melancholy of those fans who picked up that final issue of SSoC #235 or CtB #275, when they originally appeared on the shelves of comic shops. However, since becoming a Conan fan, I have picked up reprints of the entire SSoC and CtB series and actual complete runs of the other short-lived Conan series that Marvel published in the middle and late 1990s, including issues 1-10 of CtS.
    I did not enjoy the 11 issue run of Conan. It felt like a generic barbarian named Conan who had nothing to do with Howard’s Hyboria. It was difficult to trudge through that unforgettable run and I shall never do so again.
    Conan the Savage was a mixed bag, much like the middle issues of SSoC, when it was not under the editorship of Roy Thomas. SSoC really got a much needed second wind when Roy Thomas returned in issue #190 and it is a shame it ended only 45 issues later.
    I am not sure why Marvel would end either run, only to relaunch them under different titles and resetting the issue numbers. If Conan was not selling well before, that stunt proved no panacea.
    In any case, if I recall correctly, the second story of CtS #1 was originally written for SSoC #230, but for whatever reason it was printed in CtS #1. The final issue, CtS #10 is chronologically the final story of Marvel’s Conan, being a direct sequel to Conan of the Isles. It was an adaptation of an Ashton Clark Smith story and it was supposed to be a springboard for a whole new set of adventures of Conan on the North and South American continents as they were in the Hyborian Age. Titan Comics has a new SSoC B&W magazine and Roy will be writing a story or two. As unlikely as it is, I hope his stories for Titan take place where CtS #10 left off.
    Thanks for putting out a video on this short-lived and underrated magazine!

    • @tennesseefats
      @tennesseefats  6 місяців тому +1

      Good point! I wonder if Titan will build off of that idea of Conan running around North and South America as they would have existed in the Hyborian Age.
      It would be a seriously fun story!

    • @senatortombstone
      @senatortombstone 6 місяців тому +1

      SSoC #166-169 features an adaption of the Odyssey, in which Conan tries to take a shortcut home from Vendhya by crossing the Pacific Ocean and bumps into South America and travels to the Arctic, before eventually making his way back to Aquilonia. However, this story takes place just after Prince Conn was born and it was not written by Roy Thomas, so it really does not fit into the overall continuity. That said, like many issues not helmed by Roy Thomas, it is still a fun story to read.
      When Roy returned SSoC and CtB, he jettisoned and ignored much of what transpired during his absence. For instance the entire story about Zukala in SSoC #189 (the issue printed before Roy's return) was subtlely retconned into noncontinuity in a panel of CtB #241, when Conan tells the Priest of Ibis Karanthes that he had only ever been to Zukala's castle once.

    • @tennesseefats
      @tennesseefats  5 місяців тому

      I can understand Roy making the choice to write off some stories. He spent a LONG time working on this character and the IP and although he had others do a lot of work later I'm sure there is just something personal in there for him and Conan.
      Those SSOC issues sound awesome. They are actually just after the original SSOC's that I bought as a teen and read in my first forage into Conan and the Black and White Magazines. They're in the box with the rest of the run I'm working on but I have not got to them yet. A Conan version of the Odyssey would be a great story! How they could pull that altogether with the canon would be another matter, but definitely the makings of a good yarn!

    Maybe im not such a technophile as a Conanophile but I can't find you on Reddit. Awesome video as always. It is one series ive had serious trouble tracking down. The Bisley cover served as major inspiration for one of my all time favorite miniatures (like D&D figures) that i painted quite a while ago.

      Oh no! That's odd. I know when I was in there and I did a test the other day it came up on the upper right hand side as a "Community" when I did a search for "SavageSword" but I wonder if that's a cookie thing with my browser...
      Glad you liked the video - this is definitely a hard series to track down!
      You painted this one on a figurine! That's awesome! Those things are so detailed, that must look amazing!

      Sorry for the delay, but I've been doing some poking around and asked an expert. Apparently this is the route to go right to the subreddit: www.reddit.com/r/savagesword/
      (assuming I'm going to be able to post a link in here...)
      I've been told that apparently some places require that you do have an account with reddit to request access and that is totally the case for this one.

      That Rune issue was a serious power issue! I'll be doing another video where I walk through the three part story and I'll get a little further into Issue 4 when I do that.
      Rune was just an amazing Malibu character and the savage nature of the character blended well to the Hyborian age.

      I heard the same thing. It’s a shame really. They bought the company, absorbed the characters, and then promptly folded all their titles and characters….malibu had some great work and if given time would have really done well with some of their titles. But I guess that’s just one of those “could have been” stories…

      BUT after noting that I had issue 10 I went digging and it doesn't seem to be filed in the right place....it's a never ending issue it seems with these later smaller series that I never seem to put them in the right place. Hah!
