    A horse stance done with proper and correct form can increase flexibility fast while still maintaining muscle,tendon, fascia strength. It’s better than forcing a split and getting injured. Give it a try.

    Excellent philosophy on kicking and flexibility (or the obsession that some have with static flexibility) I absolutely agree 100 percent, I’m a better kicker now that I’m older and slightly less flexible from a static flexibility standpoint then I was as a younger martial artist who was really flexible

    • @grantstevensma

      This is so interesting! Conventional wisdom would say the opposite - but as we know that doesn't necessarily mean it's true! I think the issue also lies in the fact that there's a large misunderstanding on even what a good kick is. It's so more than just a leg in the air and a bit of flexibility.

    • @Jesoteric
      @Jesoteric 3 місяці тому

      @@grantstevensma it’s more about dynamic stretching/flexibility, and even more importantly good technique, posture, alignment,balance, if you have those things your body will adapt to what’s necessary from a flexibility standpoint

    Great video man! appreciate the time & effort you put into this vids!, I’ve been struggling with my kicks lately in terms of pivoting. It’s gotten a lot better but still needs work and I have to put more emphasis on my strength training like those leg holds! & also flexibility I’m a little ambitious cause I wanna peform basically splits kicks standing on one leg!

    • @grantstevensma
      @grantstevensma  3 місяці тому +1

      Yeah man, you can certainly do this but it has to be balanced as the video suggests. However saying that, I haven't seen anyone off the top of my head that I've seen perform say a standing split kick like that, who also has good explosiveness. They're usually slow

    Excellent. I taught TKD for over 4 decades. I would say though, at 60 yo now, my personal routine focuses more on maintaining attributes such as strength, flexibility and endurance. When I kick the air it is at a medium speed, just fast enough that the timing and sequence of the kick happens correctly. I do far less fast kicking in the air. That is reserved for target and bag work. At some stage of your life, you own the technique you have practiced. This is why having great instruction from the beginning is critical to long term training.

    Amazing video I’ve seen a lot of MMA fighters with grappling backgrounds who are very strong but lack the flexibility and they’re training their kicks and kickboxing styles, but they are not doing the stretches at all especially after or for multiple sets for long holds and this is what simply it takes to achieve good for that atchetype

    Great video Grant!
    Those slow kicking drills are gold as warm up, my hips feel great afterwards. I totally recommend a few rounds before sparring or padwork, after some general warm-up though.
    One last thing, among all those stretches, I'd add some for the hip flexors such as a low lunge or a frontsplit variation, this way you get the legs stretched from all sides. Keep the good stuff up!

    Great video, great info. What are your thoughts on dynamic stretches(swinging straight leg forward, side or back)? Which I see you doing but not really mention in this video. Which I do think is important for some of the archetypes you mention, especially for those focused on strength and conditioning. Your thoughts? Slow kicking drills are definitely a game changer. Thanks for the great content you put out there.
