    WHO AM I?
Hey there, I’m Cinzia DuBois. I’m a part-time, self-funded PhD student and UA-camr, Podcaster and writer. I’ve been creating videos for over thirteen years. On this channel, I talk about dark and ancient history, literature and folklore. I discuss productivity, personal development, PhD, academia, and mental well-being on my second channel.
    ❗️DISCLAIMER
I am just a random student on the internet who loves reading, especially about ancient history and classics. My videos aim to make classics and ancient history interesting and accessible to everyone. I am not a professional or qualified educator, “expert”, historian or classicist. However, I ensure that all the information I use in my video scripts has been collated from numerous credible sources. Additionally, I am dyslexic, and I will mispronounce words. This does not stem from willful ignorance, and I try to research how to pronounce words before filming, but I often misread my phonetic spelling. In light of this, please do not rely on my video for an authoritative or reliable source of how to pronounce certain words.

I was blown away the first time I ever heard that the Dullahan was a headless horseman-type monster. I had seen the character multiple times in the Castlevania games, but I never realized he was a headless horseman until much later. Up until that revelation, I mistakenly believed there was only one headless horseman in all of mythology, that being the one from Sleepy Hollow. But later I would learn that the Sleepy Hollow horseman was just one of MANY headless horsemen in mythology, which also included the Dullahan.

So Cool, one of my favorite horror stories of all time... Here in Colombia, we have a similar one involving a dead priest who lost half his head.

Cinzia, your videos are making this year an especially fun spooky season! I already know there will come a time in the future where content like this just won't be made anymore, and I'll fondly remember what a treat it is to cozy up to a new Lady Of The Library episode on a cold October night.

I just heard the original Scottish version of this story. It was about Ewen of the Little Head. It is similar, but not quite. Then there was Irish like you said.

I am 57 and remember my grand parents telling me of how their family members (in rural North Carolina) believed in the Death Coach and claimed to have heard it before the deaths of loved ones.
All of Scotch-Irish, Irish, or Highland Scots descent.

Love this! Though just for another time, Ichabod is pronounced Ick-uh-bahd. “Ch” as in “chaos”. :) Otherwise, really like these vids. There’s so much I hadn’t heard even though I know the Irving story and a little about the history.

the Dullahan in his coachman guise reminds me of the Cornish/Breton personification of death the Ankou who is said to be the first person to have died that year or the first stillborn son of Adam and Eve whom in his role as the Grim Reaper picks up & carries the souls of the death in the back of his wagon

I like how you have the image of Saturn when mentioning Crom Dubh. I appreciate your subtle acknowledgment of the correlation. I heard in another video that some Romans believed Saturn went to Brittania after Jupiter took over (Instead of Elysium or Tartarus). I'm not sure what their source was, but I could see Romans interpreting Crom worship as Saturnian. Of course, I'm aware the whole sacrifice thing is controversial too. You should make a video about Crom Cruach/Crom Dubh. It's such a fascinating topic and there isn't much accessible content about him.

There is an anime called Durarara that has a female dullahan as one of the main characters. Someone manages to steal her head from her and they carry it away to Tokyo. She goes there to search for it. Her horse takes on the appearance of a motorcycle to fit into the modern, urban setting. Her name is Celty. 😊 It's so fun.
