    This was a really practical discussion, Pete. I’ve always been a casual X-T shooter but I grabbed the X100VI with the expectation that I’d feel how you feel and we’re both not wrong. Despite that, it’s nice having an X100VI to grab and go and I find more comfortable using it on the street and in public places like restaurants. It’s more fun than my X-T cameras in some ways but my X-T bodies are also more fun in others, especially with shortcuts and settings. I will say that the X100VI’s photos look better than my X-T5 with the 23mm f2 lens but I think that’s to be expected and I feel like I’m more intentional with my photography with the X100VI. That makes it worth it to me and I recognize I have the privilege and luxury to have so many cameras so I don’t take that for granted.

    Having owned many Fuji cameras since 2012 and currently own X100V and the XT5, I agree with your conclusion about the XT5. I am currently using the XT5 primarily with small Voigtlander manual lenses which creates a form factor not much larger than the X100VI. I acquired the X100V when was introduced in 2020 and used it extensively for family events, hiking, biking and international travel, sometimes instead of the XT3 or XPro 3 I had at the time. This changed when I bought the XT5 in May of 2023 and paired it with the Fuji 27 F2.8 pancake. On a trip to Madeira this winter, the XT5 and 3 small Voigtlander adapted screw mount manual lenses (full frame equivalent 24, 50 and 112 mm) persuaded me that I do not need to get the X100VI to have a light, compact system which meets my requirements. Further if I want more reach and autofocus, I can use the XT5 with my Fuji 90 or 70-300 zoom.

    Enjoyed your video and I think the comparison with the XT5 was a valid one. I am fortunate that I have a XT5, a bunch of lenses and just this week my X100VI arrived. Why both, you may ask, because I feel it compliments the XT5. I'll always have the X100VI in my bag but I don't always want to carry around the XT5. I still have that wonderful sensor, great jpegs, IBIS, improved autofocus and the ability now to crop without losing too much resolution.

      I have also ordered an X100VI and hope to receive it soon. This will be an addition to my existing kit of X-Pro2, X-T2, X-T3, X-T4, X-T5, X-H2 and 2 x Nikon Zfs. I love both Fuji and Nikon cameras and both manufacturers have great after-sales service. Luckily, I am in a position where I can indulge my passion for photography and the GAS aspect does not adversely affect me.

    A really fair review I'd say. Personally, for the difference in size and weight, I'd always go for the interchangeable lens system. An X100VI is 521g inc. card and battery. An XT-5 is 557g inc. cards and battery, body only. The dimensions aren't massively off either (128x75x55mm vs 130x91x64mm in case you're wondering). Stick an XF23mm f2 on the front and you're only adding 180g.
    Then factor in the pricing and availability. Pay £1600 here in the UK for a space on the waitlist for the X100VI, or head to MPB and get a 'like new' XT-5 and the 23mm f2 for a combined £1700 (even brand new from Fuji that combo is just shy of £1900). That would be my preference, but to each their own.
    Interesting comments on the rest of it though. I bought an X-H2 recently (I prefer the body/layout to the XT-5) and despite the AF tripping itself up every now and then, I've never been so pleased with my in camera results. I shoot raw and jpeg to different cards but am continually sharing the jpegs straight from the camera. I can't remember the last time I felt the need to grab the raw and tweak it. Acros+G has become my favourite film sim (with classic chrome a close second), and I think it's this ability to get pleasing results immediately that's making me accept the camera can be annoying in other areas, but that the grass won't necessarily be greener on the other side.
    Great work as always and good to hear some honest opinions. Fuji discussion often seems to be 'it's the best' or 'it's the worst' with nothing in the middle, so it's refreshing to view your content.👍

    If you are traveling person and love to have a quality photo and video this is the perfect camera without doubt . The XT5 is more for a semi pro camera as you can have many lenses to choose . I had the xt5 as well but as a pro it’s not suitable for me as I prefer full frame canon R5 and medium format fujifilm gfx 100ii for my work but when I travel the x100vi is the one I take with my family and the rest stay home .

    The X100v made me switch from Canon to Fujifilm. I absolutely love this wee camera and have taken some of my best shots with it. When the X100vi came out, I was faced with the decision you cover in your excellent video. Upgrade or treat myself to the XT-5? I ditched the Canon gear and now am lucky enough to own an X100v and an XT-5. They are completely different cameras. If you can, get both!

    I just picked up the Voigtländer 27mm and 18mm pancake lenses. Paired with the X-T5-- a setup not much bigger than the X100vi. However, the magic of the x100vi is the leaf shutter and flash sync speed.

    Hi Pete. Great video. I shoot all manual and I am a man of a certain age so can’t see the dials at night, so I use the command dials to control shutter speed, aperture and ISO. Way easier to do.
    I understand your comparison with the XT5. I also own the XT5, but I don’t feel like that’s a point of comparison. The use case of this camera is apples/oranges different from the XT5. I think prospective buyers should be looking at it for what it is: Point-and-Shoot.
    The XT5 is much larger and more serious. It’s also way less clandestine, which is important for street/candid photography.
    The X100V filled that spot. The VI expanded the V’s capabilities.
    Like you, I prefer my XT5 for photography, but there are situations where bringing it with a couple of lenses isn’t practical. The VI at least gives me some of the juice of the XT5 but in a simpler, smaller pack.
    Nice breakdown though.

    Great video and thanks for sharing such comparison. I have 2 X-T5 bodies , 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR , 56mm f/1.2 R WR
    I had X100F and X100V in the past. Especially X100V was almost perfect only having no IBIS. I sold them and bought oneX-T5 and i am glad I did. Then after I went for second body of X-T5 as i am doing semi pro photography from time to time. X-T5 is great camera with a lot specs and absolutely a camera for pro works. There are a lot of photographers on youtube you can see their pro works with X-T5 and great XF & 3rd party lenses.
    I watched a lot review about x100VI and concluded myself that in my opinon FUJI made a mistake and used 40mp sensor in X100v without altering the 23mm f/2 lens. They still use old lens they used for x100v and I think they should have updated lens too. In some reviews I also noticed same point and it is true. I guess It is same like you have older version of 23mm f/1.4 and against 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR (or similar situation like 35mm against 33mm R LM WR etc etc ..) Lens on the x100vi and tecnical updates inside body do not match.
    Anyways, I totally respect people who like to carry a small body for travel, street, daily pictures etc. but in all cases X-T5 rocks !

    • @PeteCocoPhoto
      @PeteCocoPhoto  7 місяців тому

      The older lens is a concern for a lot of folks. I was very pleased with the image quality from the X100VI but didn't do any specific tests. A while back I attempted to test the "optimized" lenses but there's no way I could figure out to do this well outside of using the lens on a 40mp camera and judging it on it's own.

    I love that 35mm lens on the X-T5! The X100VI is not the camera for me. Love my X-T5! It has two card slots and they’re UHS-2 where the X100VI has a slower UHS-1 single card slot. No backups!

  • @NicolasBENOIT-l5f
    @NicolasBENOIT-l5f 7 місяців тому +1

    Very good analysis of your experience on these 2 boxes, thank you.
    Excellent idea to have compared 2 cameras with similar technologies but a completely different approach to photography.
    I had the X-S20 (since July 2023) which is smaller and lighter than the X-T5. I've had the X100VI for over a month (I was lucky!). In fact the difference in size between the X-S20 (or the X-T5) is really felt when you put the X100VI in your jacket pocket.... the others don't fit! Even if visually their formats seem similar in reality there is a very big difference.
    After having received and used the X100VI sufficiently I decided to resell the X-S20 (with its 16-80 and the 23mm 1.4 LM WR) because the X100VI is exactly what I was looking for. I was looking for compactness, but while staying with Fuji because I find that it is a brand that has a soul. In addition, I find the adjustment dials on the X100 (or X-T) more natural and pleasant to use than PSAM.
    The X100VI does not have an interchangeable lens but this requires you to be a little more creative, and you can still zoom in the image thanks to the 40Mpx, or add one of the optical add-ons.

      @PeteCocoPhoto  7 місяців тому

      Yes, I did play with the hybrid viewfinder a bit but I found that I still preferred the EVF mode. Part of the issue is that they companies only loan us the camera for 2 weeks, so it's tough to get it all in there, esp when this is not a job but a labor of love I do in between my 2 real jobs LOLOL

    Great video mate.
    I recently had the Vi vs T5 discussion with myself, and I went with the X100, mainly because I believe it will give me a better user experience in the street.
    People say that the T5 is more practical because of the interchangeable lens option, however I don’t see that being any more practical than the X100, given that a wide conversion or telephoto conversion lens on the X100 is just as simple as placing a different lens on the X-T5.
    Either way both cameras are fantastic.

    I would say the X100VI is for people use to use Full Frame bodies and lenses. They are surprised by the weight, size and image quality. If you are a Fuji shooter with an XT5, a XE4, an XS20… X100VI does not make sense. I was one of the first buying a X100V back in spring 2020 and I was bored of it in 6 months. But I’m in love now with my XT5.

    All that being said, if the 1 lens is perfect for someone in the X100vi, I’m sure you’ll love the image quality. Just keep in mind the price if the X100vi and the lack of changing lenses. I’m a primary telephone kind of guy for landscape/wildlife photography, so it’s not for me.

    Actually this is a very important video as I was wondering between the two for a while now. I was confused between the slightly larger body of XT5 but lens, battery advantage and the X100vi for the smaller body, value and simplicity.
    Especially here in India, X100VI would cost the same as XT5 with a small 27mm lens (TTartisan) as a starter. So I have been confused as a medium level photographer who's gonna shoot family, travel and some occasional video and all. Haven't bought a camera in a decade so anything will be nice for me hahah.

    I was initially very keen on maybe getting one but my logical brain kicked in. What would I use it for? yes you can change the focal lengths with the in camera crop mode but ...that has negatives. I love my XT5 and I concur with what pete says its. If you only shoot family, street and maybe holidays get the X100Vi. For me it comes back ti what tool do we need. We fall in love with with the idea of camera being more than a tool and that might sound cold but after a few weeks you'll find its a tool. Many people have complained about the fact they upgraded it with 40 megapixels and in body stabilisation but if they had not done that then essentially they would've just rolled out the same camera and what would've been the point of that. I do think the upgrades from the previous model are very significant and I did briefly try the old camera .... A mate of mine had one and I did like the previous model and it was fantastic, but this is definitely a significant upgrade to the previous model. Many people talk about the cost of cameras and the point I make with cameras is that if you spend say $2000 on the camera but you use it for 2000 hours in the next say three or four years then for entertainment value it's actually a really ch form of hobby and entertainment so don't always look at the cost of a camera look at what you're gonna get out of it and that would be the same for the actual camera itself. What are you going to get out of this camera? As opposed to what does the camera do, thank you for your video as always!!

    The x100vI offers me things that my interchangeable lens x-pro3 doesn’t. Built in ND filter, Ibis, flash which means I don’t have to carry more things. Of course the 40mp sensor. So it is an excellent companion.
    The X100VI is not supposed to be a Swiss Army knife type camera. Comparing it to an x-t5 doesn’t make sense. If you prefer to shoot 50mm and 75mm equivalent then now you are talking at least $2,500 for the x-t5. That’s more than a couple bucks.

I take it everywhere with me and with 3 lenses I can cover any event, portrait sessions, concert, sporting events and most importantly family moments that I come across. Much, much prefer the sensor of the x-t5 over the previous generation for colour rendering and other things, and with the X-100v I aim to shoot jpegs, and keep so mamy more SOOC than with the V when I would be editing raws so much more.
    Im my case, I will probably now sell off the 23 1.4 LM WR, which I never really took too with the combination of being very sharp and distracting out of focus areas and rendering. Sure, the x100vi isnt as sharp, but its really impressed my compared to the V when cropping in to details.
    But I think it depends what lenses you would otherwise use on the x-t5 and whether you only see the x-100vi as a compact camera or truly appreciate the whole new world the leaf shutter, nd, flash and viewfinder provide that the x-t5 just cant. I think in a lot of reviews of the x100vi this is overlooked a lot. Its not just a compact camera with a built in pancake lens, it offers a whole lot more.

    Great vid..even if from the cuff. lol. I found the 6 to struggle in AF as well. Not as bad in low light situations. That being said, being primarily a GFX user, I really feel the 6's AF weighs heavily on contrast detection. I dont feel phase detect is really coming into play. Phase detect is new to Fuji and although they have come leaps and bounds, they have a lot to learn from the likes of Canon and Sony. Good stuff! see you on "X"

    Great video! Like and subscribed. Love the form factor and the look of RR style that X100 series offers but having ability to change lens is more important and practical to most people. So X-pro4 would be the best of both worlds if Fuji could release one. Doing manual focus using fly-by-wire lens is honestly a poor experience. Need a true mechanical manual lens to achieve the real deal. Again x-pro4 would be the better option if there is one. If I have to choose between X100 VI and XT5, XT5 wins…

      Not all Fuji compatible lenses have poor UI for manual focusing. The Viltrox Pro lenses (27 and 75) provide a very good manual focusing experience with the Fuji XT5.

    I love the X-T5 and my other camera is the x-pro3. The x100 series has no real appeal for me because it’s not much smaller, it isn’t as robust and has no interchangeable lenses. I understand the hype for it, it’s a beautiful camera but it has nothing I can’t replicate with one or both of my cameras.

    Well Pete, you’ve got me rethinking my pre-order on the X-100vi. I have owned an X-T5 for nearly a year now and it is my main camera for landscape photography. I pre-ordered the X-100vi on February 21st and still have no idea when I will receive this camera. Could be Christmas based on the lack of information from the camera distributor. I ordered the x-100vi as a daily carry camera that could be a backup to my X-T5 and dedicated use for personal videography on vacation. Your experience is making me wonder if I should maybe consider other Fuji options such as the X-S20 or X-H2. The fixed focal length on the X-100vi is the only negative for me. PICK ME PETE 📸

      @@PeteCocoPhotothat's right. I thought 16-80 zoom will be enough but it is only f4, then 33 F1,4 lm wr because it's just great, then viltrox 13, because we need wide fast prime, now 18 f1,4 lm wr, because it's also fast and great. And now thinking about 56 1,2 for portraits of course. So you should have said, that xt-5 can be much more expensive than x100vi because of this.

    Fujifilm missed creating the best camera ever. X100V with changeable lenses. It would come in the box with 23mm lens so it would be the same as currently but then people could switch lenses.

    • @TerraThink
      @TerraThink 7 місяців тому +1

      It's not that easy.
      It's only as compact as it is because part of the lens is inside the camera.
      Then it's a leaf shutter and I don't know if the rest o Fuji's lineup has that...
      The built in ND filter is also a part of the complication.

    It's disingenuous to say the XT-5 is "a little bit more" money. If the argument is that the XT-5 is more "robust" for its interchangeable lenses, then what's the average cost of two lenses? Let's say $450; so that's $900 then. That's NOT "a little bit more" money. So now we're averaging $2,700? C'mon. This is why the X100 line exists.
