It’s one thing to make something in a lab, it’s another to mass produce it and sell it at a competitive price. If the batteries they make really last longer than the cars they will be put in, then we really need to come up with standards on these battery packs, so that we can swap them into other makes and models of cars, instead of them going to waste.

    • @johncahill3644
      @johncahill3644 Рік тому +10

You make a valid point about standardization, but one also has to ask this: why should the car wear out before the battery pack does? An electric motor/drivetrain can easily be designed to last for those 2 million kilometers. As this EV market shakes out, I fully expect to see quick lube joints and small-parts mechanics to be largely replaced by local auto-upholsterers and vinyl wrappers (and so on).

If this battery technology turns out to do all they have claimed, it will indeed be a game-changer. But, forgive me if I suffer from "game-changer" fatigue. I would appreciate it if you could drill down a bit more and let us know if this is for real. Perhaps you can give us real-world examples of where this battery is currently being used. Are there any EV companies buying these batteries or have them on order? What about an interview with their CEO and a tour of the factory? Are there any articles in the research literature about this battery type and its strengths and weaknesses? There are too many unanswered questions to conclude that these batteries are game-changers. But I will stay tuned.
On another note, I agree with your take on the importance of President Biden pushing domestic development and production of batteries and associated high technology. While I have the highest respect for China's ability to produce EVs and batteries, of late, they have been saber-rattling a bit too much for comfort. The West needs to develop its own sources of domestic production. Our over-reliance on China is a national security concern. Increasing our competitive position will help balance the world economy so that other nations will have alternative sources of supply. This will help consumers speed the transition from ICE vehicles to EVs in the long term.

I like these heads-ups on battery technology, but they run a little close to clickbait. I used to plan technology acquiaitions for a Fortune 100 company, and I watched new tech closely. But, I had a rule of thumb when talking to business managers -- if it wasn't in production I didn't mention it. If it was in advance stages of development -- Aptera -- I might talk about it with the more tech-savvy execs, but I always made clear that the odds of actually arriving in the near future were slim. That's a rule I suggest for you. Less "gee whiz."

Lets hope that proves to be true; what I've been seeing; is lots of companies are trying to get around the law by brining in partly completed cells to the USA and then fixing them up a lot like Chinese parts put into a car assembled in the USA and then qualify for the discount. I sort of hate these companies that cheat the system.

The older generation of car companies have had to do a lot of sketchy stuff to remain competitive. The have to deal with politicians, media, share holders, Unions, parts suppliers who themselves all have these same problems, etc. Many of these groups have directly opposing needs. Keeping them all happy is nearly impossible without bending the rules, and loopholes have been put into those rules specifically so they can use them. Tesla is uniquely efficient. This would not be possible if they were unionized, had to deal with dealerships, had to deal with suppliers that all have their own special interests, so yea I agree that it sucks but that crappy system was manipulated and twisted over decades by all those various interests.

@@lengould9262 Nah, I just wanted to shed some light. I work in manufacturing and a decade ago, I had the same point of view you do now. Over time, I came to realize why certain things are the way they are. People get in the way of efficiency all the time for all different types of reasons. It's stupid and annoying, but it's just reality. ICE car companies have long been the target of environmental groups who are often supported by the media in there attacks. Compromises get made. Unions have a lot of political weight, so often get their way as well. Of course the share holders demand profits, so the company will fail if that isn't delivered. None of these groups are all that worried about the long term health of the companies they are hindering. Even the share holders often just look at short term profits. The people running the company are generally very high payed CEOs who may or may not be worth their expense. Squeezing something through a loophole left in a law is just enough for them to survive in a market that is extremely competitive where they've been losing market share since the 70's. Close those loopholes and they'll be owned by Chinese companies in under 5 years who don't have any of those same problems to deal with.

      @@andrewkaiser7203 Why?
Storage solutions can only charge and discharge at a certain rate. Usually, it's not fast enough either way to be viable OR useful. Even as a stopgap between one power source and another, it can't provide enough power to keep the grid up.
This is being proven daily in Australia, where citizens are seeing more power fluctuations (brown puts and blips) and damage to their electronics and appliances.

UNLOADING the existing grid is important.
40% of grid load is the 300million homes.
With every EV and rooftop solar sold the grid is effectively UNLOADED,
the electrical energy IS AT THE ENDS of the grid for all practical purposes.
When 50% homes of has an EV and a little rooftop solar system the grid will only need to supply 80% of todays electrical power,
when 100% of home with an EV and rooftop solar, the grid will only need to supply 60%
and if the homes feed in say 40% to the grid then the
grid power, from centralised plants, would be only 20%, this is tiny, small.
NOTHING but red ink for the power companies.
