  • This video introduces a new series of lessons I'm making to teach Chinese pronunciation using Pinyin. Pinyin is a method of phonetically writing Mandarin Chinese using the latin alphabet. In this series I will teach you to read, write, and pronounce Chinese words using Pinyin.
In this lesson you will learn what pinyin is used for, as well as be introduced to the components that make up a Pinyin word. Pinyin words are made up of an intial component, a final component, and a tone. In the rest of the series I will teach you how to properly pronounce all of the initials and finals in pinyin. Once you know how to pronounce pinyin and the four tones you will be able to properly pronounce any word in Mandarin Chinese.
I hope you enjoy this lesson series!
If you are interested in private chinese lessons, please visit my website harbinmandarin.com and send me a message.
    Thanks!
    Yishuang

Even though I already know most of Pinyin and came only for some letter pairs (like x and sh, j and zh) I'm watching this as interested as I could be; your way of telling information like a funny and engaging journalist and the little curiosities all well-organized are so entertaining! Simply put: your way of teaching makes me want to learn Chinese more than the language itself! Hugs from Brazil!! 💙

@@brauljo I meant I'm here more for the teaching style and personality than for the language! Since I'm learning a couple of languages already, I might not continue with Mandarin as of right now, but she's so engaging and organized that I don't mind watching a couple videos every now and then haha 🙏🏻

Actually the Yale romanization of Mandarin was first in 1943, by the Yale sinologist George Kennedy for a course teaching Chinese to American soldiers, and popularized by continued development of that course at Yale. The system approximated Chinese sounds using English spelling conventions in order to accelerate acquisition of pronunciation by English speakers. It's pretty the same system as pinyin but some of the spelling of words makes more sense to English speakers. For exmaple xing was written as sying, jian - jyan, tun - twen. There is an online tool i use whenever im having trouble with pronouncing certain words, i use it to look up the word to see if there is an alternative spelling for it.
Love you videos, very informative and easy to understand 🙂

This is an excellent description of pinyin. It helps me understand that pinyin is more than a way of sounding mandarin characters but is also a complete system. I eventually want to learn how to write and read simplified characters. I can now understand why learning pinyin will help.
    Cheers

Looking forward to this series! I'm learning Chinese casually by myself (I'm actually learning Japanese, Korean and Thai, but also got interested in Chinese lol), and have some issues with the romanisation/pinyin, like in the word xiàng liàn (necklace). The first "ià" is pronounced "ia", but the second "ià" is pronounced "ie"! How to know which one to say if you see "ià" in a word..? Why is "ie" written with an a... why not "xiàng lièn"? "Miàn tiáo" (noodles) is also pronounced "mièn tiào", but again written with "a" in both parts.... why oh why, so confusing lol
