Hey, my 87 year old father died last year and ever since this song was released 69/70, dad always said to play this at his funeral, that's what we played as our exiting music to the service. Couldn't let him down after being such a brilliant father despite his latet dementia and I hope he looked down with a smile on his beautiful face

There's also an error in his lyrics when he says "never been a sinner-I never sinned"-wrong!! that's all we do as humans-without Jesus we would never enter God's Kingdom-Jesus is the one who has never sinned not us-however he wipes away all of our sins when we repent and follow HIM.

@@robertthomas4016 A legendary tone such as this, is bound to have some legends told about it. I have no idea which are real and which are not. The particular one I heard, was he was using someone else's guitar that had an early and crude amp built in to it, sort of like Clapton uses. I do find it amusing though, that a Jewish guy wrote one song about Jesus, and basically retired off it in his 30s.

I read in an interview with Norman, there was an add-on for the guitar (instead of the pedals which was apparently the usual way - not a guitarist here so it's all dutch to me) a band member had invented, but he later disappeared and they couldn't reproduce it and so they were never quite able to reproduce the exact same sound again.

This song is on my daily play list. It always makes me think of my grandmother who we lived next door to. Gramma didn't have a mean bone in her body. She was very religious yet not in the sense that she had to join a building full of people to show her belief in God....she lived it every single day in everything she did. I never heard a radio play in her house. She didn't watch t.v.....she read her Bible, baked, took care of her home and watched the wildlife outside of her windows. She and I had a very special relationship. One of the things we liked to do with each other was pick weeds out of her front yard. One day I saw her in the yard, so I walked over. I had with me my handy dandy portable radio tuned into the one AM station we had where I lived. I turned it down, set it on the ground and joined Gramma picking weeds. I heard the DJ introduce this song so I asked Gramma if she would listen to it with me. She answered yes, so I picked my radio up, turned it up and stood beside Gramma. Within moments she was bopping to the beat....something I had never seen her do. She faced me, reached her hands out to me, so I set the radio down and we stood there dancing in place while holding hands through the whole song. Nothing like that ever happened again with me and Gramma but on that one sunshiny day, Spirit in the Sky had a 60+ year old woman and an adolescent girl vibing and dancing together in her front yard. It was beautiful. Thanks for your reaction and for reminding me of that happy day. Take care and be well. Peace.

As an atheist, I can say this is probably my favourite religious song. Followed by U2's "I still haven't found what I'm looking for".
    This is definitely a banger

You gotta hand it to Norman. He was able see that a Christian song would be more popular than a Jewish song. He also took the folk base and added some psychedelic rock and created a song that everybody loved. When you can get a Jew and an atheist to sing, "I got a friend in Jesus", you know how to sell your song. I guess its all about appealing to your target audience.

My husband knew Norm , he was a friend. After Norm became Christian, and this song was a HIT, the sludge of the L.A. Music Industry were really after him, & before they could drag him back to the 👹, his wife & he became kinda hermit ranchers up in the northwest somewhere...

Sweet...feeling the family interactions...LOL...great stuff. That is awesome. I'm an atheist. And nothing in that detracts from you and your families outstanding moments.
Love it. The only singular reason I even mentioned it, many folks are ignorant, forgetting that everyone else had a religion before this thing you have.
I don't care, just that you must know...everyone has a mother and father, they loved their children as deeply as do you.
Why did I comment? Because, you are a good man and father, and I have every hope that you do great things for everyone near and dear.
    All the best to you.
    Cheers.

When my dad passed away we played this at his graveside. It was his one request. Hearing it blasting out over the cemetery is my best memory of a supremely difficult time. I know he was up there rocking out to it. I will always cherish the looks from everyone there to honor him. At first complete shock, then total understanding because they knew my dad and that this is the way he would want to be remembered, rocking out until the end. My sister and I couldn't look at each other while it was playing, we would laugh every time we made eye contact. He knew the reaction it would get and it tickled his mischievous funny bone every time he talked about having it played. I miss him everyday, but this song always brings him back to me.
