I am exactly the same as you. I managed for over 38 years with all electric saws. I had tried other peoples cordless not impressed. Then about two years ago I bought a compact cordless saw. Now I have a full size right hand top handle and a rear handle left hand. I no longer carry my old faithful 9 1/4 Hitachi that I have dragged around for nearly 40 years. The technology has in my opinion finally made them viable as an every day tool. The big rear handle does have a big appetite for batteries when ripping but has plenty of power for most things. Never thought a majority of my power tools would be cordless given I started in the days of Yankee screwdrivers. But here we are.

Deffo feel the same Dave. Despite being around since the mid 90's, battery cordless circular saws have only really been up to prolonged, professional use for the last few years. Like you, I used my faithful, 110v Hitachi 190mm saw up until the beginning of this year👊 when I replaced it with a DeWalt Flexvolt one. As I said in the video though, my little Makitas have been surprisingly good and so get a lot of use💪 Great comment and thanks for watching 😎 Have a great weekend 😀 Del

Thanks for the video. I was trying to decide between the DHS660 (XSH04) and XSH06PT (only cos I can currently buy the kit with two 5.0Ah batteries and two-port charger for about S$409 (about £224) compared with paying about S$200 (about £109) for the bare tool version of the XSH04). But after watching this video, I've decided it's best for me to get the XSH04 and purchase the batteries and charger separately - mainly cos of the size and weight. In case you're wondering, yes, it will be my first Makita tool.

I'd actually love a discussion on pencils.
I've gone back to regular carpenter pencils.
Those newer tracer style types with the replaceable lead are OK when in my workshop, but on the job I can't get on with them. You're forever sharpening and replacing the lead and it's not as easy to do quick and easy scribes with them.
I've gone back to regular carpenter pencils.
I bought loads of those normal yellow and black hb pencils a while ago which was a mistake. They've changed the make up of the pencil so it's a bugger to sharpen with your Stanley knife. It's like a weird plastic type material.
I used to just use those pencils you can nick from screwfix but they fall too far down into the pocket of my tool belt. Infact a few of my smaller pockets are blocked at the minute with drill bits and stubby pencils.

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  3 роки тому

@@flyingjackcarpentry9394 Hi Kallum🖐 I broadly agree with your assessment of the various pencils we use as carpenters👍I still get on OK with the black and yellow Staedtler pencils with a proper pencil sharpener, and use a proper carpenters pencil on heavier, roofing work👍Great comment mate😎 Cheers

@@thetallcarpenter I've given up on carrying a pencil sharpener. It winds me up too much trying to find the buggers.
I'd rather get some decent quality carpenter pencils.
My mate bought a box of these black ones that say 'Barbarossa' on the side so I've been nicking loads of them.
A discussion on Stanley knives would be cool too.
I use the big Stanley knife with the brass coloured wheel on the side coz it fits in one of my tool belt pockets just right and I like you can get some two handed pressure behind it.
I've got the good looking bessey knife and the fancy looking wood handled Stanley. The bricklayers have nicked and ruined all my cheaper bog standard ones and I refuse to by anymore.

Great review. Thanks for sharing. Do you think this model is precise enough for precision cutting / cabinetry? Am guessing roofing doesn't require super precision?
I noticed some UA-camrs (eg. JSK-Koubou) used a Japanese model HS474DZ which is 125mm 5400rpm 18v, has brake. The base is actually adjustable past 90 so no worries about dialing it in perfectly.

I have the DHS680Z model. One key difference that I have noticed with your one, is the way you slide the battery into its housing. Rather from the back (behind the handle) like most Makita products, with your one you have to slide the battery to the side. Out of curiosity, how often do you use the positive stops on the saw?
