I’ve bought a indoor hydrangea and transplant it to other pot. I’ve left it outside on winter and now is coming back ❤️ can’t believe it!

I buy many “gift” hydrangea for early color. They won’t bloom all summer the first year but come back the following year and are beautiful and healthy. I’m in zone 8. I have many Endless Summer...great continuous bloomers.

I have about 115 hydrangeas, four of which were gift hydrangeas, the first being one I had at my mother’s funeral in March 2001. It took three years, but that hydrangea did bloom. They can survive outside, at least in Zone 7b they do, but they prefer very deep shade and have absolutely no endurance qualities. They do best in larger containers that can be brought into an unheated garage for winter. They will be the most vulnerable to heat, cold, and disease. A late spring frost will do them in.

Hallo, Two years I did receive this type " Blue colour Gifts hydrangea" didn't survive, one kept in outside garden and another one inside the room. Very 😭; today got the right answer. Thanks 🙏, Zz, Milton, Canada 🇨🇦

When can I buy and plant hyndrangeas in Connecticut?? I think it’s zone 3?? Actually I will plant in pots on my porch because the 3 I have in the ground are much liked by the deer😟.

And why exactly wont the gift hydrangeas grow and rebloom? Even in a big pot that's brought to the garage for winter?

In the perfect climate they will. In general though, they are genetically not equipped to return and rebloom.

The landscape hydrangeas go through a breeding process, and are trialed in outside gardens for about 5 years before they reach retail. So they have bred into them, specific characteristics like size, color, hardiness, sun tolerance. The gift hydrangea is a generic hydrangea, bred only for beauty. They can survive as landscape plants, but only where weather is not extreme. In my experience, they do best repotted in large containers, where they can be moved to shade and protected areas, and brought into an unheated space to overwinter. They take a lot of work and overall will not be hardy or robust as the ones professional breeders have created.

    This is false.
7 of my 9 hydrangeas are "gift" hydrangeas.
The first summer is rough but they pick back up. This is sooooo false, this video.

      What zone are you in?

@@Rouseinthe_House I'm in zone 9. One of the hardest zones to grow them in. I also lived in zone 3 and was able to make them thrive. Two different extremes.
