People tend to anthropomorphise too much with pets and misunderstand that what is good for humans isn't always the best for dogs. Constantly in awe of the brilliant things you do for these dogs matt.
I think it’s good you took the extra time to explain why you had to take the leg off. Sometimes people just need to hear a longer explanation especially if it’s something major. You may see it daily but regular people don’t and they may need to be shown the thought process and how it was the best available option. I appreciate it anyway so thanks for everything you all do to help all these animals!
Elmer was used to dragging a bad leg around, so it was probably a relief when it was gone. He already had built up the strength and balance he needed to function without it. Now there's less weight hanging there.
Elmer is a perfect dog, three-legged or not. He's so affectionate, good nature and as cute as can be. We have a rescued that looks and acts very much like Elmer, we love him dearly. Lucky is his new adoptive parent. May you have a wonderful life, Elmer! Thanks, Dr. Matt.
Dr Matt. You dont have to answer to anyone. If you amputate an animals limb then I trust that you made the best decision possible. You are the doctor. No one else really has any business questioning your decisions. Hope you have a great week.
keriezy Why wouldn’t you trust these experts? They wouldn’t be practising if they didn’t know what they’re talking about. Not only that but it’s illegal to practise medicine without a license.
I'm a human and many of my human doctors have misdiagnosed me and I have a very common skin condition. Always ask questions and be informed. There is no harm in asking him why he doesn't do prosthetics. The good news is that he's a good doctor and actually lets us in on the reasons why! Should Dr. Matt let people get him down? No, he is doing what his training tells him is correct for these animals.
i was actually thinking why carnt they put a brace on the leg,but unlike the negative comment's, i had enough faith in Matt and staff to know that of course all opions have considered and weighed up, cmon vets are some of the most educated trained people in a modern society, so we should back them, not second guess something we know nothing about,i certainly dont think my high school education qualify's me to second guess someone as decent and caring as Dr Matt
Just donated $10, I know it's a small amount but it's all I can afford to spend right now. What these guys do is amazing and I'm so glad these animals can find care from such kind people! Most of the dogs and cats my family ever had were abandoned, we took them off the streets, fixed them up at the vet and kept them or gave them to loving homes. These videos make me miss my family home and pets so much, but in a good way.
He would be much less likely to be adopted with the bad leg still intact. People will know that it could cause problems down the road and that surgery will be expensive. He is much better off without the leg and his quality of life will be improved greatly as well.
Plus, he was already used to not using that leg, so losing it wasn't a big deal. Animals are so much more resilient than people want to give them credit for, they want to think animals go through the same things humans do when losing a limb. Usually, by the time they lose the limb though, they've got so used to not using it, it's no different, and maybe even a relief to not have to drag the thing around any more. So, yes, it does improve their quality of life, for the simple reason that they can move around easier.
People here need to understand that many of these dogs and cats were facing euthanization.. would you rather the animal be euthanized or have an amputated leg and then adopted out? Dr. Matt tries his very best.. but he can't spend a fortune on MRIs and prosthetics (that will likely become chew toys) on every animal so although physically more could have been done, it just wasn't feasible under these circumstances. It's sad that Dr. Matt would have had to do an x-ray just to make the naysayers happy, even though he already knew what the outcome would have been anyways. He's the vet.. you are not. Let him do what he does and lets enjoy the fact the lovely pup was adopted into a new home.
I totally agree, although he may have done the radiographs. Folks have an unrealistic view of animal rescue. Millions of animals are euthanized every year. A. it was a good decision for this little guy. B. prosthetics? He doesn't need it. And the cost would be equivalaent to saving 100's of lives.
Kaitlyn Gatineau plus we have seen in past videos that he doesn’t do that. He usually just does the procedure despite the cost which we have seen him do several times in the past. If he has hope that it can be saved he usually will try to save it
I am now 70 years old, and have seen a thing or two in my lifetime. And yes, BTW hubby and I are donors to VR. In my experience, DISlikers, almost never donate/foster/adopt/rescue/advocate, or really do very much of anything. All they do is sit and disapprove. I hope they will be very happy up on their moral high ground. The rest of us down here can get on with the business of creating value in the world and supporting others (like Vet Ranch) who also do the same. Over and out.
Well your comment couldn't be more wrong. I dislike many videos and my husband is a veterinarian and we have an animal rescue and my husband does surgeries for free and we don't ask for donations. We are animal rights activists so please don't clump every one together in your opinion of those who dislike or make a ' negative ' comment.
UK DoctorFRCS I find it funny that you have to comment on this, she is helping and saving animals lives, she chooses to donate, Dr. Matt is not forcing you to donate, you can gladly refuse, thats your choice, all She is doing is helping. She only doing good
Provocateur Not cruelty because he trying to make him feel better. How would you feel if you were carrying around dead weight all day and it bled all day?It was the best option
I love Elmer!! I remember him from Off the Ranch and fell in love with him then. Thank you for giving him the extra attention and as always Vet Ranch ROCKS!!
Your investment into these abandoned animals is absolutely heart warming. You are a very kind person and caring professional. Your children have an awesome roll model.
Its better just to get it off, it wont only get sores but it could get tangled or stuck on something outside... i've seen it happen and i also saw a cat loose nails from a paw that she was dragging(she was born with it not working). What he did was the best option for the dog! Such a happy dog!!! He is so funny wagging his tail! Loll Happy that he got to be taken by Vet Ranch!
I know this comment is going to sound cliché... but I absolutely love Vet Ranch, and the fact that it is so obvious that you love each and every animal that comes through your clinic. You are all incredibly compassionate and skilled human beings, and are changing the world for these sweet babies. ❤️ Thank you guys so much for sharing content, and allowing people to learn more about veterinary care.
I'm 23 years old man and I'm crying like a girl after watching your video about how you save the lives of these animals ... thank you for what you are! You are the best!
Do those people understand how much a prosthetic costs for a pet?!?! I watched a series of videos of a vet in the UK that does that....and trust me, if you don't have "thousands of dollars" you can't get it. It's called The Supervet, amazing show, amazing doctor and his dedication to peoples pets is wild. Very, very expensive!
Yup, plus it took a ton of failures to get to that one success. And it's a wonderful achievement, when you have a 150-pound arthritic dog who couldn't function on 3 legs, who has a semi-retired millionaire owner who can afford to give them a chance at decent quality of life by taking extreme measures with the possibility of failure. But why do that with a small breed puppy even if they could afford it, when an amputation has faster recovery, and they're going to be perfectly happy on 3 legs anyway? Just doesn't make any sense. And of course, that's to say nothing of all the money it takes, and needing 24/7 care for months afterwards, which is obviously something homeless animals just aren't going to get. I think people tend to have an emotional attachment to the idea of "this animal lost a limb" and lose sight of the fact that they're still losing a limb when they get a prothetic anyway! Supervet is really amazing, but that kind of extreme operation is just not the best choice for every animal, even finances aside.
Amputation is the right thing. I think some people watch shows like Vet on the Hill or Bondi Vet where sometimes instead of an amputation the will do something else...like some kind of prosthetic, but those are very specific cases. Even those guys do amputation most of the time.
Remember that (almost) everything on vet ranch is paid for by donations, they don’t really have the funding to try a procedure that might not work when something as simple as amputation works just fine. This is especially true when you don’t know the animals medical history. If someone were to bring their pet in with a similar issue they would have funding to use specifically for that animal, and they would know what, if anything might have occurred to cause the problem. Amputated limbs on animals, once healed, have no negative repercussions. There’s just an empty spot where there was once a leg, the animal can walk just fine and there are no additional procedures needed.
Confuzed Graphite totally agree! We had to make the decision for surgery or amputation for our rescue after an accident. Amputation was more costly and and easier recovery time. He’s 13 yrs. old now and has been a tripod for 6yrs. He gets around just as well as any other dog and adjusted immediately to the change.
My twin sister is a ER Surgeon/Vet in specialty hospital in NorCal for last 20 yrs and her male border collie had cancer in his shoulder area and so he lost his from leg... he adapted immediately and was able to do everything he did before. Elmer is an awesome dog! He is going to have an awesome life!
You are doing Good work my friend, and because you are educated in this department I fully trust your diagnosis whoever questions you should know better.
Whenever I see something about animal amputation, I am just honestly amazed at how quickly they bounce back. An animal’s ability to adapt will always be incredibly inspiring to me. From everything I’ve seen of animal amputation, it isn’t a tragedy like it is to a lot of humans, it’s a relief. However any vet can make a pet most happy is beautiful in my book.
Toward the end, Dr Matt says "rough day, huh bud?" Yeah, rough day and week. Puppy lost his leg and his b*lls. But, he has survived and will find a nice home.
My baby boy Bama is a tripod and has been for most of his life. We had to make a difficult decision to amputate, but felt it was the best for him, and honestly what we could afford. He adjusted immediately and gets around very well. It was a much easier adjustment then what the surgery recovery time would have been.
All these dogs you guys fix is super. You guys are Superheroes. And through it all Dozer just accepts whatever you bring home. So he's a Superhero too. God bless all of you.
Thanks for the addressing how and why you approach amputation the way you do. It was a question for me and i didn't even think about the notes you said... like about the dog freaking chewing on the dang leg. A natural thing for a dog to do. thanks!
I pray Elmer got his forever home with Matt, Elmer just looks like he belongs to Matt and his family. Thank you for all you do and God bless you always 🙏
I wouldn’t care if that puppy had one less leg! He looks like so much fun it doesn’t matter he can still do pretty much anything any other puppy can and he has an awesome personality!
Owww Elmer! He is such a good boy!! I’ve seen many cases of amputation on dogs and like Dr. Matt said they are doing just fine without bad leg. Thank you for improving his quality of life. I’m falling in love 😍 with Elmer 💕 hope he is adopted by his forever family by now.
I love how the internet has made untrained people think they are experts on everything. Thanks for explaining clearly enough that hopefully the armchair experts will understand why you did what you did.
Matt hey I want to be a veterinarian and I’m working so hard to become one you’re videos are awesome and make my day I learn so much from your videos thanks for helping these animals and I will try my best to get on the same path as you to become a vet and I will be buying a vet ranch shirt.
Jeremy Newhouse thats a cliche name. Every 3-legged dog Ive seen has been named that. Why call attention to his disability? Do you call all humans with one leg peg leg?
Elmer looks so much like a dog I had as a kid. Same sweet hyper personality too. So glad he found a good home! (Still miss you, Ginger...). Honestly it looks like that leg was just slowing him down.
So glad that you were able to get sweet little Elmer's problem taken care of, I'm a pet owner myself and love that you have the skills and compassion to care for these animals. Thanks for your time and patience, glad you are a Doctor, "ish" keep up the great work you do! 🙏👍
Elmer is definitely a cairn terrier or some kind of mix with one. I have a cairn, and they are seriously the best dogs. So sweet yet active and energetic!
Dr. Matt I appreciate the work you do. I watch a lot of animals being healed helped but you touched my heart. The updates you do not always see. thank you. God bless you. Praying for your calling.
Thanks so much for all you do, Dr. Matt! You and your family are great folks and great Americans. I am proud to know that there are still people like y’all in the world. What a cute little guy Elmer is! I hope he has a perfect fit of a furever home with people who love him dearly. Is there any way we could get an update on him maybe six months or a year post-adoption? (Hey, that would be a great spin-off channel/series! Maybe have the kids interview the owners when they are a little older?) My rescue Sheltie, Bela is a former puppy mill mama that my local Sheltie Rescue bought at a livestock auction. Sad, sad story. She was in fairly good health physically, but her spirit was completely broken. I had been a long-time obedience trainer/handler, but nothing prepared me for Bela. It took a long time, but she is now living the happy life every dog should. She’s terribly spoiled and shows us how grateful she is on a daily basis.
I find it amazing folks would question your decisions regarding the welfare of these strays, especially with all the good work you've done in saving them over the years.
Watching those ads gives them ad revenue and helps them with money so when you think about it thay way its not so bad, especially for those who dont have the funds to donate through the abandoned pet project! :)
My kitty white tiger fell last summer while I was on vacation I came home to find him unable to use his entire front left paw he hadn't been able to get to his food and water for the entire time i was gone 💔 😢 I was heartbroken still am and feel like I was the worst pet parent because he got hurt and had to be put to sleep 💔 😢 because I couldn't afford to do what your doing for this sweet loving puppy thank you so much for helping him

From everything I’ve seen of animal amputation, it isn’t a tragedy like it is to a lot of humans, it’s a relief. However any vet can make a pet most happy is beautiful in my book.
Elmer really took a shine to Dr. Matt. He's such a happy little boy. I totally trust Vet Ranch's decision to amputate. Love ya too.
Toward the end, Dr Matt says "rough day, huh bud?"
Yeah, rough day and week. Puppy lost his leg and his b*lls.
But, he has survived and will find a nice home.
Matt : *says to dog* "ruff day huh"
Me:* laughs harder then I should have*
😂😂😂🤦🏻♀
My baby boy Bama is a tripod and has been for most of his life. We had to make a difficult decision to amputate, but felt it was the best for him, and honestly what we could afford. He adjusted immediately and gets around very well. It was a much easier adjustment then what the surgery recovery time would have been.
All these dogs you guys fix is super. You guys are Superheroes. And through it all Dozer just accepts whatever you bring home. So he's a Superhero too. God bless all of you.
I would’ve happily taken this sweet boy in - he’s a treasure!
Thanks for the addressing how and why you approach amputation the way you do. It was a question for me and i didn't even think about the notes you said... like about the dog freaking chewing on the dang leg. A natural thing for a dog to do. thanks!
Ahh poor pup! It makes me happy that there are people like you that help animals.
I dropped everything and immediately clicked on this
Jerry Zhang Me too !
Jerry Zhang I did the same
Jerry Zhang same now will you excuse me I have to finish my video I was watching before this
me too, now theres scalding soup on my crotch
I pray Elmer got his forever home with Matt, Elmer just looks like he belongs to Matt and his family.
Thank you for all you do and God bless you always 🙏
I wouldn’t care if that puppy had one less leg! He looks like so much fun it doesn’t matter he can still do pretty much anything any other puppy can and he has an awesome personality!
I don't like watching ads. But I just watched 4 ads and I don't regret it. 💓
Some of us ' arm chair experts' are experts.
You work miracles on these animals! Thank God there are people like you taking care of them!!
I just love this scruffy pup!! Sooo cute! Dr. Matt always does what's best for the pup!!!
Omg I want him
Matt hey I want to be a veterinarian and I’m working so hard to become one you’re videos are awesome and make my day I learn so much from your videos thanks for helping these animals and I will try my best to get on the same path as you to become a vet and I will be buying a vet ranch shirt.
He's the sweetest little dog!
Thank goodness for all you vets at the Vet Ranch! Such animal heros!
What a wonderful personality! Who wouldn't want that dog!
Should change his name to tri-pod. I love him. Anyone who thinks you guys don’t want the best for these animals must not watch often.
Jeremy Newhouse sick name😂😂
Ew no Elmer is a great name, tri-pod is just awkward
Lagarda Lagarda At least he *tried*
Tripods are the cutest . My hamster is a tripod too 😊
Jeremy Newhouse thats a cliche name. Every 3-legged dog Ive seen has been named that. Why call attention to his disability? Do you call all humans with one leg peg leg?
AMAZING young pup-!! 💞
He is soooo cute
So sweet yet active and energetic!
thank you for helping elmer! ty for the video!
You and this channel called hope for paws should team up You guys both save animals and it is so sweet!
Dr. Matt I appreciate the work you do. I watch a lot of animals being healed helped but you touched my heart. The updates you do not always see. thank you. God bless you. Praying for your calling.
He is adorable, I would take him in a heartbeat.
"This is drunk Elmer." I seriously snorted laughter at that! Absolutely the cutest dog I've seen recently--thank you Vet Ranch!
I would love to have a pet like Elmer. He is really cute
Maybe have the kids interview the owners when they are a little older?)
My rescue Sheltie, Bela is a former puppy mill mama that my local Sheltie Rescue bought at a livestock auction.
Your kids are adorable!! And Elmer is so special!!
Anybody watch hope for paws?
Legend himself another good org. Some of their videos are soul crushing though
yes i do love that show they do a great job
Yea and animal aid 😊
Yet yeet 😎
I do!
Dozer is such a good dog!
Finally seeing Elmer off the ranch people know what I’m talking about 😉
You guys are amazing. Thanks for helping Elmer!
I love animals and I wish Elmer get's better! I LOVE Vet Ranch!
Who here loves Vet Ranch 😄
LOVE YOU SO MUCH GOD BLESS YOU! 😍😍😘😘😋😋
UA-cam has apparently upgraded to having 2 ads before each video
Lilly Wilmoth l hate that seriously 😅 not necessary
Watching those ads gives them ad revenue and helps them with money so when you think about it thay way its not so bad, especially for those who dont have the funds to donate through the abandoned pet project! :)
I’d say downgraded, but, 🤪
You're becoming a miracle worker. Well done. Surprised with your kids you don't have a home full of pets. I know I would
My kitty white tiger fell last summer while I was on vacation I came home to find him unable to use his entire front left paw he hadn't been able to get to his food and water for the entire time i was gone 💔 😢 I was heartbroken still am and feel like I was the worst pet parent because he got hurt and had to be put to sleep 💔 😢 because I couldn't afford to do what your doing for this sweet loving puppy thank you so much for helping him
