Loved the simplicity, no bullshit, get to the point attitude that you have. No, ifs, ands, buts or ums... You get right to it. I love that. I don't wanna run down of your friends sisters online experience that she had while buying another part... I wanna learn how to install my freaking intercooler. Yup, I like your no bullshit approach. Its EXACTLY what I want when I'm working on upgrading my Mini.
I did a lot of research before I picked mine up and everyone always said upgrade the intercooler, I saw videos like this one of installs and thought, “holy crap what does that even do?”.
Finally did mine! Work for LKQ and got all kinds of after market mods for 30$ saved me thousands and an upgraded intercooler was one of them. So far so good. Thanks again
Your videos are top notch. They are concise, and make upgrades much more accessible to the average gear head wannabe. Putting my new intercooler in today!
Seen videos where others dismantle far more of the car to upgrade the intercooler. This one seems to do the job with less hassle and less parts removed, getting the grill and bumper unit off. Makes the job look simpler.
Thx, I’ve been building non turbo muscle cars for years, turbos and minis are new to me. I thank you and enjoy your videos, they are real world projects
I just subscribed... Best channel so far for "MiniMods"! I bought my first Mini a little over a month ago and this channel has helped me out tremendously. Thank You! Out here in Louisville, KY where I live, Minis are looked down on. Nobody takes them seriously in the underground street racing scene. So far I am the only street racing Mini that I have seen and I get laughed at all of the time until I dog walk the ones who are laughing. I want to build up the Mini scene in Louisville by making people aware that Minis are serious contenders. We are quick, super light and handle like we are on rails! With just a few mods you can make an already fast Mini a really fast Mini... And that is exactly what I am using this channel for!!!
The reliability of these cars always kinda scared me away from getting one of these, but seeing just how easy it is to work with this car compared to my Mercedes, I'm pretty dead set on getting an R56.
Hey thanks man, my dad and I just used this video to install the same intercooler on my R56. Definitely would have gone far worse/ slower without this video Hana.
A lot of "actually"s - not OMG-horrible but noticeable. Wanted to say good call on the parts site - I want to support the channel but not stoked about the hoodies. I'll be sourcing replacements for all the OEM crap from there. Thanks for helping to give me the confidence to make a friend's mini road worthy again! After watching a few of your vids, I'm not clear about PCV delete & catch can. I'm planning to go with catch can on intake side instead of the PCV delete - someone let me know if that is dumb. Thanks!
What intake air temps are you getting versus ambient air temps from each intercooler? And are u noticing any difference in your boost pressure at a given rpm than before?
Dude are you a mechanic? You're very good at what you do.. :) I'm glad you do pinpoint the weakpoints of the mini since i was considering looking for one as just a secondary daily driver fun car.
BTW, MINI just put out a recall on turbo chargers for the N18 engines which happens to be the same turbo in the N14 engines. Unfortunately, they don't have the N14 on recall, but parts guy at dealership said it's possible it will be listed as well. I'm really hoping for this since they quoted me $3700 to replace my turbo. maybe if enough people contact MINI, they will see the need to add N14 engines to the recall.
Excellent video, it gave me confidence that I can do the job. One thing that I would like to suggest, the audio mix between your voice and the music is extreme. I kept turning the volume up to hear you and down to equalize the music. Just a small detail..👍🙂
Glad the video helps you man thanks for the tip. I was very new to UA-cam and editing at the time I have long since improve is on this issue but thank you for the constructive criticism!
I have just installed an aftermarket intercooler for my r56, but what happens to me is that 1) The bumper doesn’t go in enough to put the bolts from the bottom of the bumper 2) it seems like the intercooler sticks out more than the original so the bumper cannot fit where it was before. Is that OK to just leave it as it is ? Although I tightened the two bolts in the front and the two bolts at the side
Can you upload an uneditted video of you removing the front bumper and also putting it back on. I have been planning to do this for months but I'm concerned I won't be able to remove the bumper correctly/put it back on. (How many of those little plastic rivet screw things did you break?) ETA: Also any idea why these inter coolers are listed as being for 2007-2012 or 2007-2011 R56's when this model went through 2014?
Bimmerdude, I looked at the link you provided for the valve cover but it comes up with a bunch of different ones. They are all aftermarket and cheap. I was told to stay away from aftermarket valve covers but I do not want to spend the stupid prices they are getting for OEM covers. Could you tell me what exact one you got? I have a 2009 Mini Cooper S CV.
Thanks for the link. Just bought the front mount from your site and liked and subscribed. I was getting annoyed kept finding intercoolers for post face lift. I have an 08 mini Cooper Clubman S
Great Videos. I have an R56 N18 and I replaced the cold air intake with the K&N also had the Burger Tuning JB+ Will upgrading the intercooler cause any lag?
Thanks for posting this video, your channel gives some great ideas and your instructions easy to follow. Your website however, the link you have for this part, is not the same as the one you are installing. Do you have a link to the part that is in this video?
Looks like an involved swap, but not overly so. Looks like this guy did it with out the aid of a service guide or exploded view diagrams. Any MINI enthusiasts out there know where take-apart guides can be found online?
About to install a new intercooler looks like yours. Just wanted to know where you connected the ring found on the top of the unit. Also just an ask the volume level for the music vs your comments level is much higher. Maybe in post you could make them more even. Otherwise good vids and a big help with my mini project
Hey Bimmer Dude, Thank you for the video/s. I just purchased a 08 S model and I love it. I was wondering that after upping the intercooler, you mentioned about the DME retarding the timing. Do you know if that is going to be a reliability issue? And is there a fix for it? Thanks Bimmer Dude.
Are you not remapping it after changing the intercooler? You should always remap a turbo charged car when changing intercoolers, exhaust systems or anything that affects the boost pressures, exhaust pressures, fueling etc 🤷🏼
Unfortunately I did not at this time. Keep in mind this is an old video.i reset all adaptations on the dme and allow the factory dme to adapt to the increase and volume and density of air. All air-fuel ratios were in normal range which I was able to monitor using my torque app
I have an extra one of these (manufacturer sent me two by accident when I ordered it) so if anyone else is thinking about doing this upgrade and wants it.... we could probably work something out. I WOULD STILL REALLY APPRECIATE THE FULL VIDEO, OF REMOVING THE FRONT BUMPER!
E Unit that's awesome man! I'll be doing another video at some point regarding the fog lights in the bumper. Pelicanparts.com has really good walk through I believe though if you not able to wait .
Thanks for the link. I ordered a bag of 100 of those plastic rivets because last time I took some off I broke a bunch, so I'm still waiting on those before I attempt this (I guess they're coming from China.... by boat). But yeah I'm kind of excited, I'd like to be able to get to the point of being able to have Manic Stage 2 done. Though... I am also thinking about a bigger turbo also. Have you heard of / have any thought on this one? ua-cam.com/video/cAeBQbjblsg/v-deo.html
E Unit take a look at the Evolve tune. You do not need to remove and send in your ecu. They send you a flash drive, and you send them the flash of your cars ecu. Within a few days they email back your new tune. I am extremely satisfied with my tune, but i immediately had to upgrade my B.O.V, and refresh my turbo internals. With an intercooler and cat back ( i am running a downpipe ) it will make SERIOUS power for what you pay. No joke, the evolve tune is roughly 50hp if i recall correctly,... and you feel it once you hit the sport button and give it gas.
Bimmer Dude ok well I just ordered on of these, i'd appreciate a lot if you could post the raw video, there aren't many good videos of removing the front bumper.
Request: please make the music volume quieter than your speaking volume when adding music tracks. Really don't like loud music in videos where I'm trying to understand what is said... The contrast with speaking voice makes is hard from a neurological pov. Won't matter to everyone, but it will matter to many. Still love your video, just hoping you can just turn the music down because what you're saying should be the most important. That being said, i didn't mind this particular track choice at all. Sounds like I'm playing Trials Fusion. Lol.
I'm interested in a Mini Cooper Countryman would you recommend changing the intercooler on that too? is the maintenance about the same as any other Mini?
Cheap intercooler, especially the Ebay chinese specials are of poor quality and craftsmanship. Weldments and materials used are below safe margins and will not hold well with increased boost pressures, they will leak. I bought a forge intercooler a few days ago and can share images so you can make informed decision when your ready to fork out cash for something that gives you a peace of mind. Quick Note: Forge Intercoolers are used in MINI Challenge so that gives you an idea that it holds in real circuit stressful racing conditions.
Hi mate I’m Guna fit new intercooler and my car has been mapped sage 1’the Guys Saying it needs colder plugs and map sensors 3 bar did u hav to do any of this
Gavin Isaac8516 colder plugs cant hurt. But you do not NEED a retune for this. You aren't forcing more air into the system. The new intercooler has a larger capacity to cool rather. However a remap could help your mini use the *new* average intake temp more efficiently. Hope that helps
Bimmer Dude hi the car is already on stage 1 runninb at 225bhp with original intercool on I’m just fitting a bigger one but my Remap ppl saying need cold plugs and map sensors to 3bar as it’s at 2.5
Gavin Isaac8516 I see. Well you can run it with out it. Honestly they should've recommended you do the intercooler with sage two. The factory intercooler is dangerously small and heat soaks quite badly. It will run more efficiently as is with your current tune I'd say do it yourself and see before spending any more money
benfromtheford great question. I have a video coming up very soon regarding this very topic. I've already purchased the updated part and have it sitting on my shelf in the garage. Definitely on my to do list. Thanks for watching !
steven mankowski I'll be completely honest with you I've been at this a long time with cars in general and I can tell you that there is really no difference aside from the name brand attached to it unless the item says Made in the USA they are all made in China the difference is nowadays you can get quality items instead of the junk we used to get back in the day. Typically the debates are between individuals who have the extra funds to spare and have always bought the name brand and individuals like myself who need to spread the money around between projects and I've come to the conclusion that it works just the same. I think the ultimately have to ask yourself which one you are. Hope it helps you out man thanks for watching the video! Also forgot to mention I do not have a tune currently and you do not need it tune to install a intercooler increasing the efficiency of the air that's cool being charged into the engine is essentially the same as installing a cold air intake it is ideal that you threw the adaptions on your ECU 2 allow the parameters to adjust for the increased density the air entering the engine.
#Bimmer Dude, i love your channel and i am surprised you have only 8k subs, you deserve 1 mil and more. But for you to have more subs, for god's sakes please buy more tools or rather new tools and car related tools. Like, plastic trimm remmoval tools, impact driver, chop saw, and so on. I have seen most of your clips and you are in high need of said tools. Love what you do and keep up the good work. All the best, Cristian
you didn't show where the top bracket attached too I'm guessing that's optional .. just wait till you have enough light to do the job that way it's easier to see at the end..good video overall thow...thxs
It's almost kind of shocking how small the factory intercooler is. I have to imagine it's not just a performance bottleneck but feel like that much restriction is just generally not good for the engine.
Claudiooo thanks for watching man. You can find the link for this intercooler on my Support me website sorry ..passed out last night bimmderdude.wixsite.com/bimerdudeautomotiveg
Erik Avila at least 3 times what the factory one can. It's easily 3 times larger.its not recommended to increase boost pressure with factory intercooler

Prolly the best comment ive gotta all year😎
Very well said. 1000% agree.
This is the confidence I needed, and the positivity as well. You explained it very very well my guy! And I’m ordering mine now!
I guess i never fully realized how disgustingly tiny our stock intercoolers are. I need to upgrade...
Dam finally a good channel with a dude with a mini !
Bad Soup thanks! !
I’m hopeful!
Hey check out MotoMedicine, he's got a rad mini

You won’t regret it
Great information, as an R56S owner, I pay attention to all your videos, great stuff!
1st video I ever watched about something like this. I am doing this to my car. Bimmer Dude Very Cool thanks
This information is relative two years later.... you definitely got a great deal on that intercooler upgrade! The ones I am finding are $700+.
Not gonna lie dude, Love your videos and actually have them playing on my TV in the garage when working on my 56
Took your advice and put a catch can on. After 1 week i checked it and there was a 1/2 a can of water. Thanks for the advice.
Tara Woods yeah, seriously, I just bought a 2010 MINI Cooper S and am highly motivated to do that catch-can installation.
Hey thanks man, my dad and I just used this video to install the same intercooler on my R56. Definitely would have gone far worse/ slower without this video Hana.
Ask and you shall receive! haha good timing! Great video, the bumper removal was better than anyone else's video! Appreciate all the help :)
A lot of "actually"s - not OMG-horrible but noticeable. Wanted to say good call on the parts site - I want to support the channel but not stoked about the hoodies. Finally upgrading mine soon. Didn't think I was going to go down the rabbit hole but I guess I am.
What intake air temps are you getting versus ambient air temps from each intercooler? And are u noticing any difference in your boost pressure at a given rpm than before?
It’s a real shame this question never got answered :(
JUST BOUGHT. 2015 AND I am RESEARCHING ALL CHANNELS FOR UGRADES THANKS FOR THE FYI 😎YOU MADE IT LOOK EASY
Dude are you a mechanic?
You're very good at what you do.. :)
I'm glad you do pinpoint the weakpoints of the mini since i was considering looking for one as just a secondary daily driver fun car.
I had it done because of you- my whip zips Now!!
BTW, MINI just put out a recall on turbo chargers for the N18 engines which happens to be the same turbo in the N14 engines. OH man that's great info! thanks for the heads up man and thanks for watching !!
Did N14 turbos ever get recalled?
Excellent video, it gave me confidence that I can do the job. One thing that I would like to suggest, the audio mix between your voice and the music is extreme. I kept turning the volume up to hear you and down to equalize the music. Just a small detail..👍🙂

Bimmerdude,
Thanks for your videos! Friendly suggestion, ditch the music.
at least turn it down. Music is nice but not when its blaring
Will be installing a intercooler here soon, waiting for it to arrive in the mail. Thanks for the video :)
Hey man I just wanted to say love the vids! Been working on my mini because of you! Thank you
This looked way easy. I'm very tempted to try it, myself.
Thanks will be doing one soon I have seen the difference in my car. Had it (R56 2011) brand new just crossed 112000. 👍🏾
Great video very informative! Too cold in the UK at the moment but this is on the to do list 😎 thanks for the video.

ETA: Also any idea why these inter coolers are listed as being for 2007-2012 or 2007-2011 R56's when this model went through 2014?
How do you like the bigger intercooler so far ? Do you notice any benefits ?
I guess this will be my Spring project....Thanks!
Good video. Do you have a tutorial how you got your front license plate mounted ?
I’m just wondering if you’d need a bumper mod in order to have full air flow. Seems like it still blocks allot of air away from the cooler
What testing have you done? Im looking to see if theres any advantages in terms of overall engine heat
Thanks for the link. Just bought the front mount from your site and liked and subscribed. I was getting annoyed kept finding intercoolers for post face lift. I have an 08 mini Cooper Clubman S
Does it have any turbo lagging issue after an intercooler is upgraded? need extra tunning for it ? Thanks
Great Videos.
I have an R56 N18 and I replaced the cold air intake with the K&N also had the Burger Tuning JB+
Will upgrading the intercooler cause any lag?
How does it respond after upgrading the anticooler
Thank you for sharing and hi from your neighbor to the west (NM).
The hood scoop is only for aesthetics if you don’t get the forced air intake
Does an intercooler add any power? I'm new to car upgrades
Awesome, informational, very nice production! You should be an instructor for the Mini dealerships
Thanks for posting this video, your channel gives some great ideas and your instructions easy to follow. Your website however, the link you have for this part, is not the same as the one you are installing. Do you have a link to the part that is in this video?
Great video, keep up the good work. This video was satisfying
Looks like an involved swap, but not overly so. Looks like this guy did it with out the aid of a service guide or exploded view diagrams. Any MINI enthusiasts out there know where take-apart guides can be found online?
So was there ever a follow-up on this upgrade?
Hey hope you’re staying safe. Who make the intercooler you installed? Been wanting to do this but refuse to cut my car.
What did you mount or connect the top mount onto
I didn't see sorry
About to install a new intercooler looks like yours. Just wanted to know where you connected the ring found on the top of the unit. Also just an ask the volume level for the music vs your comments level is much higher. Maybe in post you could make them more even. Otherwise good vids and a big help with my mini project

Water meth injection would be better. Cooler air than a intercooler can give and it keeps your valves clean and combustion chamber clean.

If you still have it I’ll take it of your hands lol
Great videos!!! Really helpful u should do a video on how to clean the carbon build up in the intake manifold
Bimmer guy, what do you think of the Intercoolers sold at Amazon for cheap. Thanks
Just bought a fmic. Is it not possible to do the removal with the car jacked and keeping the bumper on?
Awesome man! Negative bro
Is there any hp gain from doing the upgrade
Bimmer Dude ok well I just ordered on of these, i'd appreciate a lot if you could post the raw video, there aren't many good videos of removing the front bumper.
Look for mod mini. He has a lot of good videos. Some full motor swaps.
Good info man! I'm sure it will make it easy for anyone looking to do the same thing.
Treats On The Streets thanks for watching man!
you are smart.i learn a lots from u.thankssss
which one from ebay is this? your link doesnt take me to it
Does the „normal“ r56 (no s) a turbo?? The mini cooper 2007 (no s)

That being said, i didn't mind this particular track choice at all. Sounds like I'm playing Trials Fusion. Lol.
I'm interested in a Mini Cooper Countryman would you recommend changing the intercooler on that too? is the maintenance about the same as any other Mini?
Process should be very similar and Yes I would definitely recommend changing it out
I noticed there was a middle tab, do you have to screw that that into anything?
Jerald Haddox ya I think that might be there for a newer mini but mine didn't have anywhere to mount that lol
Bimmer Dude nice! Thanks a million! I will be changing mine soon
That's the reason my hood feels so hot after a drive.
Have you seen any difference in this eBay Intercooler and a name brand forge or Wagner? Very interested the price point is killer
Hey man has your r56 ever had the timing chain tensioner upgraded? I’ve just done mine. Keep up the good work!
benfromtheford great question. I have a video coming up very soon regarding this very topic. I've already purchased the updated part and have it sitting on my shelf in the garage. Definitely on my to do list. Thanks for watching !
Bimmer Dude cool, it was quite an easy job and the newer tensioner has a fair amount more tension than the original did.Look forward to the vid!
So I’m at the intercool debate cheep or expensive, it seems to be 50/50 on blogs how did you come to your decision? And have you had your ECU tuned
steven mankowski I'll be completely honest with you I've been at this a long time with cars in general and I can tell you that there is really no difference aside from the name brand attached to it unless the item says Made in the USA they are all made in China the difference is nowadays you can get quality items instead of the junk we used to get back in the day. Is your grill broken? Mine doesn't come off that easy lol
i have a wagner intercooler and a Garrett Fase 2 Turbo

#Bimmer Dude, i love your channel and i am surprised you have only 8k subs, you deserve 1 mil and more. you didn't show where the top bracket attached too I'm guessing that's optional .. just wait till you have enough light to do the job that way it's easier to see at the end..good video overall thow...thxs
Your video rock !!!! Smashing job !!!!
Did the intercooler make a huge difference?
Did you make an after version ?
It's almost kind of shocking how small the factory intercooler is. I have to imagine it's not just a performance bottleneck but feel like that much restriction is just generally not good for the engine.
Hi I'm new to ur channel.
Did u have to drain coolant and flush before installation?
Thanks in advance love from the UK 👍🏻
Dean Hughes Hey Dean you should be good to replace your intercooler. The coolant system is not connected to your intake system . THANKS FOR WATCHING!
Curious is this an issue for the mini base, since it has no turbo? (As far as I can tell. I'm looking to purchase one)
nope, not a problem at all.
Bimmer Dude I saw TX on Tag I'm a Texas Mini R55 Clubman 2014 any clubs for Mini owners you could suggest
Straight Forward Information! Thank you
Let me know if it does. I really want to upgrade the intercooler.
Yes
Great video

The link to your ebay site seems to be broken
You make it look so easy lol
you;'re worried about heatsoak.. but have an open cone filter under the hood? - good video though! :)
Remap after intercooler install?
Liked the video, it’ll help with my inter-cooler, thanks.
Doug McNamara glad I could help!
Need to paint that black for more horsepower
Will you remove the grille on the intercooler to expose that bad boy?
I thought about it but then I would have nothing to hold my brake ducts in place LOL!
How much boost can that intercooler take?
Erik Avila at least 3 times what the factory one can. It's easily 3 times larger.its not recommended to increase boost pressure with factory intercooler
Ey bro nice explained your videos thanks for share
how long does it take?
