- Quick look at a 1986 Mercedes 300SDL OM603 Turbodiesel. I wasn’t really planning a video for YT - just meshed together some videos I took after this Benz joined our family following a restoration performed by a good friend. Nearly six inches longer than the short-wheelbase 300SD, the 300SDL served as its replacement on the w126 platform in 1986. A turbocharged, inline six-cylinder powerplant, the OM603 engine succeeded the groundbreaking OM617 five-cylinder engine. Horsepower is relatively low, but diesel torque and an unmistakable clatter make for a unique and satisfying driving experience.
Very nice car! Thanks for the inspiration with those LED headlights. It's very hard to find one good 300sdl here in Germany. I'm very jealous - enjoy your car and keep it!!! God bless you. Marlon
The best w126
Sweet looking 300SDL my dream car are those LED headlights on it. Keep it looking pristine condition
Yes - Torchbeam LEDs. Illumination is great, and they’re not too bright for oncoming traffic.
@@docthediesel7781 nice you going to put LED on your fog lights
@@TheLexusIS250Dude Perhaps at some point. The restorer had put really good non-LEDs in there that are actually quite bright and just the right shade of amber.

Are they really torchbeam led lights, can you make sure, because if they are, I'll buy them
Looks familiar...
Which car do you like best? The 300SD or the 300 SDL - and why? Can you please share your experience? Here in Germany are plenty of inexpensive 300SD, but I actually want a 300SDL - I'm thinking of making a compromise.... Marlon
It’s really hard to say. I like my SD better overall because of the OM617’s durability and serviceability and the actual car’s history. But the SDL’s taller gearing helps it ride quieter at highway speeds, and the extra length combined with a softer suspension helps it glide over bumps easier for a smoother ride. At the same time, it has less low-end grunt than the SD. If these two cars were to race each other, the SD would actually be in the lead through first gear, then when the SDL’s turbo gets going, it really pulls ahead and would certainly clock a faster 0-60 mph speed.
@@docthediesel7781 Thank you very much for your detailed answer and for mentioning the low end grunt, it's something I very much dislike, especially on my 4-cilinder cars. One more reason for a well balanced 6-cilinder. I think you made it the best way, by having both of them ;-) Keep them rollin' , Marlon
