My second year of BMW i8 ownership: Better than the first!

- Many of my viewers have reached out to ask how to buy exotic cars like the ones I have owned. I admit that I didn't know much about how to buy an exotic car when I bought my first one. I was worried about losing a lot of money to depreciation, maintenance and repairs. I sought out the advice of others and the best recommendation I received was to become a member Exotic Car Hacks. I joined in 2020 and learned all the tips and tricks on how to get into and out of exotic cars for the least cost. It worked! In this video, I follow up to the first year of BMW i8 ownership video, here:
• My first year of BMW i...
After two years of ownership and 25,000 miles total miles added to the odometer since I bought my BMW i8, I decided to upload some information about my ownership experience since my last update video, which covered the first year of ownership. I purchased the BMW Wrap for my Certified Pre-owned Used BMW i8 from a BMW Dealer in order to insure myself against significant repair costs for the next two years. The 2015 BMW i8 I bought had 10,500 miles on the odometer and was previously owned by the dealership owner. It was a better looking car than a lot of the other 2015 BMW i8's I had gone to visit. Others were in bad shape compared to mine, so I decided to pay more for mine. Insurance is still about $100 a month for coverage. Of course, I still suggest gap insurance that will cover the cost of depreciation, as well as getting a glass rider to cover 100% full glass replacement due to the potential for the windshield to break in the i8.

• My first year of BMW i...
My ownership experience during the past year was a very good one! Not only did I not have many repairs, but this review was fairly easy to talk about. I literally had one issues in which the car needed service at the dealership. And, I lost no money in value due to a flat depreciation curve! Living with the BMW i8 has been a pleasure this past year and I'm glad the car has been dependable and fun to drive!

Awesome video! I got my 2016 i8 for $62,000 and it's supposedly worth $68-70k now! Awesome to see demand going up for such an amazing car.
Not if I planned on buying one 2022 😭
Thank's for all your videos Pat! I really enjoy them. I am buying my first one next week from a BMW dealer and I am super excited. I found 2014 with 9100 miles and it is going through service now. They are doing the full service and replacing all the tires before I receive the car. I was able to look at it today on the lift and saw what looks to be a brake fluid leak which I pointed out and they will fix. After watching your videos and some others, I am getting the extended warranty through the dealer so I will have worry-free driving. Keep up the videos my friend!
Thanks for the kind words and I hope you have many happy miles with your i8! Welcome to the family.
Great update info on the 2 years ownership mark.
I allways enjoy your videos. I'm absolutly sure that the i8 is a future classic. It's outstanding in BMW history, especially regarding the multiple new technical features. It's even more special e.g. as a Z8. And Z8 prices increased soon after it's production was stopped.
Thanks Pat!
You seem really happy! Thanks for sharing your content. I need to find a company to do a tune.
Thanks! I have a video on tuning the i8 - DPF Centre in the UK provides a tuning box.
Thanks for all your great videos Pat. Great to hear your 2nd year has been relatively trouble free. I agree that the i8 may well keep its value well and perhaps become a 'classic' especially as it's been discontinued now. I'm wondering that when I need to replace my 2016 model that I'll be able to afford a 2019 replacement! There really is nothing like it out there. A really unique fantastic car.
Hi Pat. I am a BMW i8 owner from Germany and I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for all the info!! Regarding the stable value of the i8 I agree that Covid is one reason but don't you think another reason is that it is out of production now? I know that 20000 i8 vehicles were built which is more than the Z8 (4000), Z1 (8000) and the M1 (400) but do you think the i8 may even appreciate in the future since it is such a unique car for BMW. For companies like McLaren or Lamborghini it's 'normal' to build exotic cars but for BMW this was really revolutionary...
I'm really not sure if prices have gone up due to no more production. Demand for the car in the US hasn't changed. I see over 100 of them for sale across the US and that hasn't waivered since I bought mine. I would expect that number to go down if demand increases due to lack of supply. However, Covid had affected all used car prices here and the i8 is following a similar pattern to any other exotic of the same year and mileage. We shall see what happens in the future, whether the i8 becomes a classic or not.
5703 Z8 were produced and only 3884 i8 roadster.
The value of i8 going up is a myth. Its been discussed in various UA-cam videos as early as BMW ceased the production. Your sire commented to this Feb 2021 and I'm writing this reply at April 2024:
In EU you can find BMW i8 with decent mileage (60-70k km) and w/o crash history for less than 65k euros. These things did cost more during 2021-2022-2023.
Congrats Pat! Kind of a big deal two years on youtube! Your channel is ever expanding, and it's an amazing evolution, and I'm grateful to know you and call you friend. As always, highly informative video.
Thank you so much! We're both growing and learning and working together as we continue this journey. Proud to have you as a friend!
Great vid! Keep a look out for the 12v battery failure on your 2015 - should be imminent! Would be interested to see a battery changeout video along with the required system coding. It’s annoying having to go to the main dealer for such a basic fix.
My battery was replaced in 2018 before I bought it so I'm likely ok on the 12v battery. My friend Soto on the Thic Garage UA-cam channel replaced the 12v on his 5 series and registered the battery to the car using Bimmerlink. Check him out for the process. It saves you a bunch of money.
This is a really insightful video. Cheers for sharing your experience, Pat! I can't believe it's been two years already. Good points about the CPO protection as repairs can be hefty. I hope that you enjoy many more miles on your i8 👌🏼💯

Great video P!
Why pat I saw your first bmw video and I was kinda hesitant to try and buy one but after watching this video I have gained more confidence for the bmw. I am 17 years old and I don’t pay rent. So I been thinking about getting a i8 to reward myself after working for a few years. With good credit how much money do you need to get a 65k car from the dealer ship? I was shooting for 15k as a down payment. And this is going to be my first car so I think the bmw is a good choice because the car doesn’t have so much horse power. But I love your videos man keep it up!
I love your work ethic and determination. You are destined for great things. A lot of factors go into your Auto Fico score which is different than a regular credit rating Fico score. Google that for more info. You can have a credit card for years and always pay it off but still not get a car loan because you have no history of having a car loan. Or, they will give you the loan if you you have no auto loan history if you can prove solid income and show a growing bank account while you also pay for your debt. It's really up to the bank that finances the deal and how much risk they are willing to accept. It's possible you can buy an i8 with 15 percent down and also possible you'll be denied and have to buy a significantly cheaper used car and build your Auto Fico score for 6-8 months. After that you may get approved for an i8. So, the answer is, I don't know for sure.
Again, Pat great video. Got an i8 also and love it. Do you think because production of this car ceased in 2020 was also a factor for an increase in valuation. Here in Canada, only 26 are available for purchase.. thanks Pat...
Thanks! It's possible end-of-production had some impact. However, I'm seeing exotic cars, in general, all going up in value, specifically since Covid started. For example, if you bought a Lamborghini Huracan at the start of Covid, you can sell it for about $60k USD more than you bought it for, even if you put 10k miles on it.
Hissing noise from the vent valve. Any ideas? Vent valve was replaced. Still has a hiss on acceleration.
Bump. :) hope you help Pat!!! 2016 BMW i8 owner
What vent valve are you referring to?
@@PatsGarageOnline thanks for the response. The fuel tank vent valve. :)
@@chansen925 I haven't spent any time with my old i8, with the fuel system, to guess what may be the issue. Sorry my friend.
Hey Pat, i saw your other video of fuel tank cap jammed and how to open it hut cannt add comments there, hence commenting here. We recently bought a BMW 216i active tourer.. and its my first refueling session that i faced a same problem. When i drove it to gas station in the morning which is about 14 km from my house, it wont open and when i checked in the night when it was standing for About 7-8 hours, it opened without any problems.. i checked it again in the morning it opened without any issues and then when i drove it to gas station 14km away. Same problem again.. i had call road side assistance and he tried something but nothing helped and then just opened by inserting the air pouch like thing. And for now its partially opened and taped. Could you please suggest the cause of this Since you seem to have a lot of knowledge about this. And you have explained it really thoroughly in that video. Could this be because some kind of fumes & pressure inside the fuel tank ?
Many thanks in advance
I'm sorry to see that you've had this problem. Usually, the cause of this is a faulty pressure sensor inside the tank. If the pressure in the tank is too high, you can't disengage the lock to fuel the car. The pressure sensor is covered under warranty from BMW, but I'm not sure the damage caused by the pressure cuff is covered.
Would you recommend me buying a 2015 or 2019 now?
Go with the 19 so at least you have newer parts in the car. They use the same parts. The 19 will likely last longer but you still have the same risks of the same parts breaking.
Pat, what do you know about the BMW i8 Display Key Fob? It's really cool but I cannot find it for sale anywhere? I would think if anyone knew it is you.
It's hard to find a BMW dealer that will sell it to you. The parts counter computer says it's incompatible. You can call around to different dealers until a parts manager figures out how to order one. I don't want one after hearing how many owners thought it would be cool but now hate it. It requires constant charging and it's large. People get them to flex on other enthusiasts, but get bored with them after a month and let them sit. I wouldn't bother. The BMW Connected Drive app is way more functional and use that to precondition the car anywhere in the world. The display key requires you to be within a few feet.
@@PatsGarageOnline ah, okay, thanks for the advise. I can see how it would get old quick.
Great Content thanks a lot!
The market price for this car did hit the bottom already. Operation cost of it will stay low and as you sad it's OK for daily commute. Compare the i8 with the Toyota you are owning I bet it will be quite competitive 😉
I have an i8 near my area I’m thinking of purchasing and it comes with a 5 year free maintenance program… not sure they’re throwing it in there just to sell, but do you think it’s risky or hell of a deal to go for it? It’s a 2016 i8 with less than 35k miles going for about 65k. Any thoughts would be super helpful thank you!
Maintenance programs typically offer oil changes, which are super simple on an i8 to begin with, so I don't see much value there. The i8 is risky to own without a warranty, especially a BMW warranty. But that car is too old to have a BMW warranty anyway. So, you'd have to mitigate the risk of repairs with your own savings. If you have 20k in reserve that you don't mind parting with to cover potential repairs, you should have nothing to worry about. I cover a lot of potential issues with the i8 in my videos. Any of them are a possibility and they typically require BMW to repair them.
@@PatsGarageOnline oh I completely see what you mean. Free maintenance does not mean at all that it is a warranty on repairs ?
@@PatsGarageOnline this particular bmw is from an independent dealer not directly from BMW… if they come with warranty does that mean the repairs they cover is in the vicinity of their dealer or directly to BMW for repairs ?
@@christiandominguez4656 If it's not a "BMW Extended Service Contract" from BMW, you have a 3rd party warranty contract. You have to get a copy of that contract and examine it in great detail to get the answers you are seeking. I found things in contracts when I was searching for my own warranty that lead me to run to BMW for a BMW warranty. Many things aren't covered, or the labor rate the warranty company wants to pay out is very low. The i8 requires special equipment and processes that independent shops can't handle. So, for me, a BMW contract, and taking it to a BMW service center reduced all my risk. You got to do your homework on the warranties by asking for a copy of the contract and make your choice based on your apatite for risk.
@@christiandominguez4656 Correct. You'll see all this in the contract. Always get a copy of the contract and read it thoroughly before you purchase anything.
whats the difference between a cpo wrap and an extended warranty from bmw?
CPO Wrap is something an owner can buy only of the car was Certified Pre-Owned. It extends the 1 year CPO warranty by 1 or 2 years at the owner's cost. The extended service contract is for non-CPO cars and is often more expensive but covers more components.
Hi Pat, thank you so much for you let videos, I am thinking to purchase the i8,
How much do you pay for the warranty?
5k
Hi pat, I have a i8, only 9,000 miles (2016) absolutely mint condition, one owner and full bmw service history, but her is my question, when I charge it up it only goes up to 13 miles range !! All the others I watch gets about 20 miles, do you think there might be something wrong with my battery ?
Thanks pat,
John Stewart from Scotland,
That range is perfectly normal and is the computer's guess as hot many miles you will get, based on driving habits and outdoor temperature.
@@PatsGarageOnline thank you mate, I do see poor miles when cold and better when warm but as you probably know Scotland is not that warm most of the time. Thanks pat
Does installing bimmertechs Apple CarPlay retrofit void the cars warranty?
In the United States:
No. An aftermarket (non-OEM) part is a part made by a company other other than the vehicle manufacturer or the original equipment manufacturer. Simply using an aftermarket part does not void your warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to void your warranty or deny coverage under the warranty simply because you used an aftermarket part.
Still if it turns out that the aftermarket part was itself defective or wasn’t installed correctly, and it causes damage to another part that is covered under the warranty, the manufacturer or dealer has the right to deny coverage for that part and charge you for any repairs. The Federal Trade Commission says the manufacturer or dealer must show that the aftermarket equipment caused the need for repairs before denying warranty coverage.
In other countries: ?
@@PatsGarageOnline yeah I’m in the US so I should be good :) are you familiar with that bimmertech car play add on unit? And also if I use BimmerCode to enable some features would that void the warranty?
@@Disneysconnect I'm familiar with Bimmertech but I've never installed it. I don't know of anyone on the groups or forums who have ever had an issue. Same with Bimmercode. No one has ever reported a warranty issue after using it.
Any idea how Sam is getting on with his?
Not yet. Waiting for his next video.
Did sam got his car started yet
I'm not sure. He's keeping his progress under wraps until the next video comes out.
What are your thoughts on 3rd party warranties? I plan on driving mine until it craps out
Due to the expenses with repairing this car, I've seen many 3rd party warranty companies stop covering the car. I suggest googling for exotic car warranty companies and asking them for quotes. Also, ask for the sample contract and examine it closely. In addition, get on the exotic car forums and see what people have been using.
I keep thinking I want one of these cars, because the style is so great. But the amount of maintenance etc. per year seems completely ridiculous at this low mileage... I guess expecting it to be on par with a typical modern car is unreasonable, it is a very specialized vehicle with numerous idiosyncrasies.
I would have kept mine longer but couldn't stand the anxiety of problems.
Hi Pat, which insurance company you go with for your i8?
I've used US National brand insurance companies like Nationwide, Farmers and Erie over the years with good results.
@@PatsGarageOnline Thank you 😊
Hi Pat, what video editing software do you use?

Hello, Pat im going to purchase a bmw i8 this next week 2014 with 6k miles is it safe to buy a 2014 or is the 2015,2016,2017 better???
There aren't enough differences in the years to warrant making a decision to buy one year over the other. Obviously, 2014-2015 cars have seen the most issues reported on the forums due to age of these vehicles. The problems that come up are related to age, more than mileage. If you can afford repairs, a 2014 may be a good choice because the cost for the car will be low and your repairs may be costly, reducing your risk. The only standard amenity that I'm aware of that changed between 2014 and later years is the addition of comfort access (where the proximity of your hand locks or unlocks the doors). All 2015-newer cars have this. The 2014 does not, and requires use of the key fob to lock/unlock. I always advise finding an i8 with some sort of warranty as this reduces your risk, no matter what car you choose and a good pre-purchase inspection can identify problems before you decide to buy.
@@PatsGarageOnline Wow Thank you.. Lot's of info and a huge help! So since Iim buying it or am getting it from a bmw dealer they will sell me a 6 year 75,000 warranty. All electronics, motors etc... That's exciting since bmw will do all the service work and repairs. I wonder how long it will take to use up the cost of buying it.. I want to find the same wheels you have on yours. I think its more sporty... I am trading in my i3 iv had since almost new... Going to miss it! but thats life dont need more cars.. I have enough now..2017 and 1014 are like $11-17 difference...
@@yeshua4429 Glad to hear you'll have a good warranty. You may have no issues and be very lucky, or you can have something like the AC Compressor fail which could be an $18k cost that you would avoid by having the warranty. The risks are there so the warranty is good insurance, in my opinion. Sounds like you've had a good experience with your i3. I think you'll love the i8.
Thank you! Your video told me alot about repairs! And I dont want to lose my *** haha
So I pulled the plug and traded in my I3 for theI8.. Wow what car.. Its awsome!. The tech is amazing for being a 2014. I got the 6 year warranty 75k plan... Has 6500 miles or did till I brought it back.. Its grey metallic .. brownish to grey interior.. funny thing Sounded like a fan going out one evening or something in the front of the hood.. Have you heard of the fans failing?
Hello Pat. Do you have any concerns about your tune voiding your extended warranty? I know about Magnuson-Moss, but it seems like putting extra power into the car with mapping that’s not original issue can give the warranty people all kinds of excuses if anything fails.
If I have an issue with the engine and BMW decides to blame the tune for it, then I may have to pay out of pocket. However, the tune has been running for a couple years on Alex's i8 so I felt safe using it on my car.
