I'm also very surprised and excited to know studies are being done about this, I think it's actually a very advanced framework
i wonder how much economic situation was taken into account when studying the "bond" between genes and behavior. if at all. from my experience, any time i hear genes determine behavior, i can look at the people the study came from and realize they are eugenicists or of similar beliefs. aka - human from this country will be expected to act this way because of "inferior" genes, human from wealthy family has "superior" genes etc.. economic status is almost never looked at with correlation to a persons mental state.
Correlation doesn't imply causation, let alone sole determination, as you probably already know. Anyone advocating for eugenics (especially in accordance to controlling the expression of psychological phenomena) has an inherently imbalanced view of the inciting "psychic forces" and conflict resolution in society, I would point to this imbalance rather than the focus of genetics to be the real issue there. This is without also mentioning a failure of understanding how Darwinism _actually_ shows us about evolution; Diversity is the greatest indicator of health in a given gene pool, more (Genetic)"memes" = more "tools". "Survival of the fittest" is a great lens but ultimately an oversimplification which doesn't address the whole picture. An absolute clone garden will blight absolutely as a matter of time rather than choice. (I'd assert that the modern industrial surge, giving rise to a zeitgeist - that associates progression in time with an upwards trend - as a given assumptive notion has a lot to do with this fallacious mode of thought)
Anyone who claims that certain gene determines a certain behavior is full of shit. We do not have the analytical ability to do this. Just look at the problems with heritability: Parents are both sources of genetic variation (literally the DNA from each parent) and enviromental variation (psycho-social-economical factors). So is that kid performing better at the IQ test/other performance measure because they have better "genes" or because their parents provided better nutrition, extra tutoring etc.? Or even a better example: earrings. Earrings have almost perfect heritability because whenever you wear earrings or not depends on your gender... or does it? It's actually a societal influence that women wear earrings (few men too, hence it's not perfect heritability of 1), but your biological sex is determined by your genes. Same deal with religion that also has high af heritability. Why? Because you are very likely to have the same religious beliefs as your parents. But there is nothing in your genes that determines your faith. Shared sources of variation like biological parents completely mess with indexes such as heritability. Likewise, a trait may have perfect heritability but be subject to enviromental changes, such as certain genetic metabolic diseases that can be managed by diet interventions. Also what is often missing is the interaction between genes enviroment and behavior. Yes, we can say what genes can predict what behavior if we know the enviroment. Example of it being alcoholism, which has very strong genetic component. But guess what, just having those genes doesn't mean you will automatically end up as alcoholic (behavior). What is needed is the exposure to alcohol (enviroment), perhaps even with some additional stressors or other psycho-social influences that make you exposed to the alcohol. Only then will the genetic component actually connect with the behavior. So if you have history of alcoholism in your family, probably best to avoid alcohol and develop robust coping mechanisms for stress. In this view it's less of a deterministic mechanism (alcoholism genes -> alcoholic behavior aka drinking), but a vulnerability that needs that specific interaction from enviroment (such drinking alcohol) to translate into consistent pattern of behavior (aka what we would call alcoholism). So yeah, gene x enviroment interactions are a big fucking deal and cannot be analytically captured by simple genes vs enviroment variation indexes. Implying that a certain gene(s) lead to certain behaviors/performance without including enviromental interaction is just flat out incorrect. And yeah most of the racists that like to look at IQ and such have absolutely no understanding of limits of heritability. Plus to make matters even more funny, IQ or intelligence isn't actually a "thing" with differing sources (genes/enviroment). Psychometrically it's more of an index of several cognitive abilities and currently psychometrics are sort of moving away from the typical Spearman type g factor and factor structure towards more of a network models of intelligence. IQ really is more less an abstraction, a statistical/psychometrical artifact that has no direct biological or genetic basis. The individual cognitive functions/operations that comprise the "network" of intelligence might, but alas genetics and neuroscience is nowhere near close enough for us to concretely identify them.

I know for sure that I am a Vata-Pitta. I believe our doshas also correlate with our birth charts. For example, I am a Vata-Pitta, and my sun sign is Libra, my moon sign is Capricorn, and I have a Scorpio rising. A Libra sun typically embodies balance, sociability, and a love for beauty and harmony. The Capricorn moon adds a layer of practicality, discipline, and ambition, often providing emotional stability and a strong work ethic. With Scorpio rising, there is an intense, passionate, and transformative presence that can be both magnetic and mysterious. The Vata dosha, associated with air and space, aligns with qualities like creativity, quick thinking, and adaptability, which can be seen in the Libra sun’s sociability and the dynamic nature of a Scorpio rising. The Pitta dosha, linked to fire and water, brings attributes like determination, focus, and a strong will, resonating with the Capricorn moon’s discipline and ambition. This combination creates a unique fingerprint where the intellectual and creative aspects of Vata blend with the driven and focused nature of Pitta, much like how the different elements of your birth chart interact.
I find it funny because I chose programming as my main path for work, and I identify myself as a Kapha-Vata, so I was surprised when you mention program development as being something that Kapha-Vatas are good at.

My first thought was that I almost want to "fight the system", but upon closer inspection it seems that I love system and structure a lot, just can't stand having to follow them all the time! I love having systems, understanding systems, using systems, but also abusing them in witty ways and going completely around! And when there's no system it's kinda hard...
I think this is really good specifically for diagnosing personality and mental health. Moreso than dealing with, say, diet or something. I think the science is there for mindfulness through Doshas.
20:30 "Ayurveda is correlated to certain genes" But isn't it like birthday paradox? (The probability of having two birthdays at the same day within small group of people is much higher then we intuitively think) I mean, genome is very big, and there are only three subsets... I really don't know much about genetics.
Statisticians are able to account for that possibility. I can't vouch for the math done for these studies but if you read them there should be an explanation of everything they've done to the data to make those correlations and you can double-check their work.
Doshas aren't exactly like three subsets, at least not exclusive subsets. It's more like a color, which has its RGB values we would have VPK (or any order you like). And these values are correlated to the genes, and the highest one will be the predominant Dosha in the person, which would lead to the idea of the closed exclusive subsets i think you had.

54:10 After hearing this, it makes me think about how flawed the software engineering interview process is at big tech companies, at least when it comes to assessing a candidate’s problem solving abilities. If I’m not mistaken, coding interviews seem to be assessing if you have a pure pitta style way of thinking (breaking the problem into its parts to understand and solve it in a methodical way). It is seen as a red flag to the interviewer if you were to solve the problem in a vata way (immediately start typing code just to see what happens). I would just like to point out that if you have ADHD, you are born with it and you have it for life. Your symptoms can get better or worse but you don't just manifest that illness from you habits. There are even physical differences in the brains of people with ADHD like brain lesions, weaker connections, or someone parts of their brain is smaller than the normal person. Some people may not realize that they have ADHD until things get really hard because it is an extremely misunderstood illness. I would just like to point that out because I think the belief that someone can gain or fix this illness by changing their habits is particularly problematic for our society as it creates even more misinformation about ADHD.
This is actually partially untrue. There are many studies that show increased technology use during development leads to increased rates of ADHD. There are absolutely genetic aspects for sure, but there’s also upbringing/development aspects that can either make things better or worse. It is not a purely genetic illness, although there are huge correlations between genetics and ADHD manifestations. And in terms of having it for life, you’re also correct here too. But just saying that ‘you have it for life’ leads people to the ‘well my only choice is medication’ which can be incredibly damaging. The fact that medication has been the first line of defense for treatment of ADHD has lead to many, many problems. There are tons of studies that go into long term ramifications of consistent stimulant use, and while the short term (pre 3 years) benefits are gigantic, the benefits fall off and eventually lead to shit like chemical dependence. I think there’s a ton of misinformation out there, but there’s also a large lack of information too.
Ah, another thing I forgot to mention. Only in about 50% of cases does ADHD follow children into adulthood. So ADHD doesn’t necessarily have to be a lifelong illness, and whether these are simply misdiagnoses, results of treatment, or some other factor is not understood (or if it is, I’ve never seen a research paper explaining it)
@@yoongitrash2699 When did I ever say that? Medication doesn't do that either, btw. Medication has equivalent effectiveness as therapy after 3 years, and as soon as you stop medicating for whatever reason (either tolerance, health issues, or anything else) it stops all effectiveness. In terms of addressing ADHD as a lifelong issue, dealing with it in terms of a single 3 year stretch is a pretty shitty way of doing it in every circumstance, lol.
Is there Ayurvedic critical discourse about diet culture? The idea of an "optimal" lifestyle is fascinating but as I'm recovering from disordered eating, it worries me a little. You can find an explanation of diet culture for example on Christy Harrison's website. I highly recommend her podcast Food Psych!
I think this is fascinating as a bipolar person - what does it mean to have stress manifest as either hypomania or depression? I thought for a long time of depression as sad/tired, and it was really helpful when a psychiatrist explained that irritability was a major symptom, since that is how both the hypomania and depression manifest for me, with different energy levels. I’m wondering if I’m high in pitta, and with a high vata + low kapha I get hypomania, while with low vata and high kapha I get depressed. I should probably watch all the way to the end, but I was so interested that I wanted to process now.
I think it's fascinating that he has all these Ayurveda concepts and words to explain ... personality types, organizational behavior, and behavioral temperament. The only advice I'd have to is try work on less code switching. I don't think everyone who watches this can necessarily say they know what you're talking about when you code switch using Ayurveda terminology. *shrug* Any very good Organizational Behavior book discusses these concepts and ties them together, with decent research behind it.
I would say that depending on the environment I'm in, my dosha leves change. I can't see how (if even possible) I'd come up with dosha levels that summarize my personality in all dimensions of my life
I wonder if there is a correlation between different types of motivation in a person and the extent to which they have experienced desensitization from our increasing access to technology and information? Like a wind type for example may have experienced high levels of desensitization, leading to their high proneness to excitement and also fast burnout, whereas an earth type may not be super desensitized and can thus prolong/devote themselves to a given passion without losing motivation.

I don't think I am ready to become the Avatar, master.
If anyone is wondering how Kapha can be successful in life, Daigo Umehara is the best example of Kapha.
He is slow at learning new things, but he can concentrate and work on the one thing he loves for everyday for literally more than half of his life. He became the best not because he has the most natural talent, but because he was the only one that was this dedicated to fighting game.
He doesn’t know anything about Ayurveda but the way he explain himself completely aligns with Dr. K’s explanation of Kapha.
When I looked into the doshas it made so much sense! I tried to many strategies to get over my depression and try to productive and I could never follow through with them. Then I realized I am a vatta with a kapha combination. And because they're kinda opposite when I tried to fix one problem say the overthinking/rumination another problem would come up, like I would become lethargic and sluggish. I'm perfectionist at times but I can't do the same thing over again
how are you working to solve it?
I've just realized the same thing about myself. Maybe we overcompensated by trying to get the Vata down into the healthy segment, which led to overshooting our Kapha... Also I feel like the "healthy area" is super narrow for me, personally. Feels like I fall out of balance pretty easily.
holy shit. this is the most eye opening video I have watched off this channel; and I never blink when Dr K speaks. I want to say I am a tri-dosha but I don't want to self diagnose
Loved this, I hope you do more ayurveda advanced lectures. I'm actually one of those people wanting to develop ayurveda more or even fuse it with western personality systems like Jung's theories, whether or not that possible lol.
"Astrology can be useful as a framework for introspection... You can use it to guide your internal journey, as a tool to enhance self exploration. That tool is only relevant to the person using it... We know from psychological research that astrology is essentially a projective test (like a Rorschach or inkblot test). The value isn't that something is objectively correct but we can use particular things to help people understand and serve as frameworks for introspective... the framework doesn't need to be objectively correct; the value is in introspection." 17:26 - ~22:16
"Ayurveda is different.. it is correlated to your genomics. We can make real scientific evaluations about variances in the population... identifying a genetic basis for mind-body typologies"
WOW. YES. All of this! The more I learn the more my life changes for the better. Sounds like you are equally curious in all these things.
I'm a scientist, I studied genomics. I'm slowly learning Ayurveda but also Astrology and Human Design have been extremely helpful guides (they are so much deeper than sun sign alone though!).

This is fascinating. Very hard to swallow though, but it seems compelling. Looking forward to studies to be made about this. Can't really be convinced until then since I know no one around me who can actually show me these things in-depth (which sounds a bit weird, actually, in a scammy way). Still super interesting.
There is so much to life that you'll never find in a study.
You yourself can study life and your self, as the Buddha did.
You probably don't see it around you because this video alone isn't enough info to understand it enough to be able to see it happen around you ? In my case, I feel as if I am able to identify roughly in which category my friends fit, because they reflect pretty strongly the "stereotype" of the doshas. Maybe the people around you are trickier case studies because they are pretty balanced or middling.

You can't fully separate these things because lifestyle is one of the biggest influences on what genes parents pass to children.
He does talks about it in his segment with prakriti and vrukriti doesn't he.
Correlation doesn't imply causation, let alone sole determination, as you probably already know.
Anyone advocating for eugenics (especially in accordance to controlling the expression of psychological phenomena) has an inherently imbalanced view of the inciting "psychic forces" and conflict resolution in society,
I would point to this imbalance rather than the focus of genetics to be the real issue there.
This is without also mentioning a failure of understanding how Darwinism _actually_ shows us about evolution;
Diversity is the greatest indicator of health in a given gene pool, more (Genetic)"memes" = more "tools".
"Survival of the fittest" is a great lens but ultimately an oversimplification which doesn't address the whole picture.
An absolute clone garden will blight absolutely as a matter of time rather than choice.
(I'd assert that
the modern industrial surge, giving rise to a zeitgeist - that associates progression in time with an upwards trend - as a given assumptive notion
has a lot to do with this fallacious mode of thought)
One thing that was not mentioned at the end talking about the community is the viewer getting in touch with different creators, i for one never heard of contrapoints and she makes such insightful videos that I love watching. I am a Virgo! I even have a 12 house stellium in Virgo! I love this guy! I wish I could see him as a client!

I find it funny because I chose programming as my main path for work, and I identify myself as a Kapha-Vata, so I was surprised when you mention program development as being something that Kapha-Vatas are good at.
programming and program develoment dont really have too much in common tbh (am programmer too)

"Ayurveda is correlated to certain genes"
But isn't it like birthday paradox? (The probability of having two birthdays at the same day within small group of people is much higher then we intuitively think)
I mean, genome is very big, and there are only three subsets... I really don't know much about genetics.
Statisticians are able to account for that possibility. I can't vouch for the math done for these studies but if you read them there should be an explanation of everything they've done to the data to make those correlations and you can double-check their work.
It's more like a pattern of traits that occur together.
Wait, aren't tridoshik people kind of like water then? Like water they are very adaptable and adjusts and changes shape depending on their environment

This is the first time that I hear about evidence for homeopathy. In Germany, we are just taught all the time that the placebo effect is precisely as strong as homeopathy (and the placebo effect has been shown to exist).
Or I could be wrong, maybe in actuality they are somehow evaluating some combination of some doshas, but I am just not aware of it.

So ADHD doesn’t necessarily have to be a lifelong illness, and whether these are simply misdiagnoses, results of treatment, or some other factor is not understood (or if it is, I’ve never seen a research paper explaining it)
@@zacharyplotkin4656 people can learn to cope with adhd and live fulfilling lives without meds but it doesn’t mean the illness just disappeared.

Doctor "I know it sounds kinda weird" K.
That Dr. K self conversation clip was great
I think it's fascinating that he has all these Ayurveda concepts and words to explain ... personality types, organizational behavior, and behavioral temperament. The only advice I'd have to is try work on less code switching. I don't think everyone who watches this can necessarily say they know what you're talking about when you code switch using Ayurveda terminology. *shrug* Any very good Organizational Behavior book discusses these concepts and ties them together, with decent research behind it.
Can you have a mixture of Vata & Kapha? I feel like both describes me which mayb is why I feel confused all time.
I would say that depending on the environment I'm in, my dosha leves change. I can't see how (if even possible) I'd come up with dosha levels that summarize my personality in all dimensions of my life

Really enjoyed this video. Took me a bit of time in to get it, and I had to pause/rewind a couple times, but I think I've got it now.
Thanks a ton for this video ❤❤❤
