Very simple; they're too big for some European roads and most parking lots, and they consume too much (don't forget that gas is much more expensive in Europe).
The size of the engine, the load of the car, the price range of the car, the fuel consumption, etc. all that affects the price of cars in Europe. Roads in Europe are much tighter. We have roads with only one lane but with two ways. Parking space isn't infinite. Our car parks are built vertically (underground parking and above ground parking), not horizontally. It's not possible to have that much weight stacked and many floors would be necessary. You'll see that the best car brands, watches, planes, perfume, clothing is from Europe. In the USA people use huge cars to drive alone. In other countries the cars are small but they will be carrying more than 2 people.
America's environmental concerns with cars just doesn't exist. Whereas the rest of the world thinks about how much pollution a car produces. Therefore, the drive in the rest of the world is getting more and more efficient vehicles. America just does not think like that. It is only going to get worse when you have a President that considers climate change a hoax. The American drive towards bigger and bigger vehicles with bigger and bigger engines will eventually cause huge climate issues. The fact that Louisiana, The Everglades and many other areas of America will disappear due to rising sea levels is again just ignored by Americans. America can keep its trucks, They will need them for driving around in 3'-0" deep salty water from rising sea levels just to get to their flooded homes.
Pick up trucks and SUV might feel safer, but most of them actually are not, as they have to pass way less safety regulations. And that's only speaking about the safety of the people driving them. If you take in consideration the other people on the road, other car drivers, pedestrians, motorcycle riders, bicycle riders, wheelchair users etc, they can very well be called lethal weapons.
Yes, people who drive them only consider their own safety rather than the safety of anyone they hit. There have been cases where the poor visibility has caused drivers to run over their own small child who was playing in the driveway.
Here in Europe they are more an EGO issue than that they can actually transport something that also easily fits in a van. In addition, they are also too big for parking spaces and instead of a 6 or 8 cylinder we can easily do with a 4 or 5 cylinder which also saves on consumption since the petrol/diesel prices are twice as expensive as in the USA. So all in all a useless vehicle here. It is more an EGO object here and you often see that in the drivers here who drive around with it. And you drive electric cars at the fair and not on the roads.
Large vehicles are necessary for large families if they travel together. I do not know how many tons they weigh but it is ridiculous to use them for getting the weight of 1 normal person from one place to another. The amount of fuel they use is ridiculous. Whether one can afford it or not, it is pure waste.
Like ANY commodity, be it grain, oil or otherwise, it doesn't matter if your country produces more than anyone else, simply by being connected to international markets means an international price hike means local price hike too. The trade prices are set internationally and affect local markets as much as external markets, less transport costs and tariffs/taxes.
2:28 when you hear the word Daimler you have to think of Daimler-Benz and therefore also of Carl Benz: so yes, the Germans not only invented the car but also the trucks (which shouldn't seem strange...)
I never understood why on earth you would buy a car like that? If you like to move things, you buy a van. If you like to go from point a to point b, you just buy a stationwagon or a sedan. It’s probably the reason why you hardly see pickup trucks in Europe.
This is a thing for farmers for example. If you quickly want to move some straw, hay, whatever, you don't want to put it in your van. You simply lift it onto your loading area of your truck. It heavily depends on the kind of freight, that you're dealing with most of the time. Not everybody does carry sensible and bulky stuff, that can go into a van. Some people carry stuff more often, that you don't want to put into your van - due to their smell, making things dirty or because it's just impractical to load and unload it. Weather, like rain, isn't an issue for every possible thing you want to transport.
@@dnocturn84 the crazy thing is, we’ve got farmers in Europe too. And I sometimes see them with a pickup truck like this. But most people that need to move things, large or small amounts, they just buy a van. Simply because you can store more things in them, and it’s safe and dry. A pickup makes sense in dry areas like Australia or something, but that’s about it.
@@MLWitteman As a farmer you might want 4WD to move on fields, a cargo bay that is open to nature and a towing capacity to tow heavier trailers. Hence pick up trucks. The difference between the US and Europe mostly boils down to different regulations. Here in Europe you can tow trailers with your Golf - so house owners might be fine with owning a smaller car and towing smaller freight just like this. Enough for garden stuff, DIY projects etc. If you want more, a van is a very good choice. Move people comfortably and store stuff safely inside. You can also tow heavier trailers with your van. But in the US the regulations are different, the calculation is mostly based on vehicle weight and engine power. A normal car, like a Toyota Prius or a Golf can't tow *any* trailer over there. Not even a small one. Even most European vans can't, because of a lack of engine power. You can buy some, that can do the job too, but then you have to buy the most expensive versions, with V6 or V8 engines, which are rare, expensive and complex in vans (due to the limited engine space). A pick up truck is much cheaper, its engines are way simpler (often based on engines from the 60s) and often more robust, there is also no lack of space for the engine, due to the large engine bay. If you own a house in the US (which most people in the US do), you will most likely want to own at least one pick up truck. Or you'll never be able to move a trailer. And you can also put a foil on your cargo to protect it from weather, or buy a pick up truck with a hard top, that will do the trick too.
The popularity of trucks in the US has more to do with the taxes and standards imposed on them vs normal vehicles. They get a tax break cos they are commercial vehicles, not passenger vehicles. Also, they are less popular because vans.. carry the same load but have it secured and protected from weather or theft all the time rather than having a cover or topper that you have to pay extra for and cuts your carry capacity. Generally something the size of a 2500 or 3500 will be based on a light truck chassis cab-over style and have a tipping bed &/or gated sides all round and used for gardeners or road crews or other lighter construction needs. The biggest use for a pickup is either on sites or farms but even then we generally prefer SUV(in this case even a defender with an enclosed body is an suv) vs pickup. That said, it isn't super rare to see pickups here but the largest is the size of a ford ranger(raptor) / toyota tacoma vs an f150/250/350 etc Artic trucks are about as big as you see (mildly modded lifted on 35"tyres of production pickups)
This is a vast simplification. The model T was duel fuel, apple jack(alcohol), and gasoline , Rockefeller paid the temperance movement 4 million dollars to ban alcohol clearing the field for gasoline. Another major point is that big oil companies have controlled the market (it's called a cartel). The USA has, compared to most major industrialized countries, enjoyed relatively cheap gas prices, which has made for gas guzzling vehicles and, in turn, higher priced fuel forced other countries to produce move fuel efficient vehicles , which has lead to a decline in sales of these vehicles outside of the north American continent. It's a vast subject brush over by this video.
Americans could massively reduce the world’s fuel emissions if they didn’t use so many ridiculously oversized vehicles. If you had to pay the tax that most countries levy on fuel you would drive more economical daily vehicles. I drive a dual fuel small family car and currently get 60 miles per gallon.
How he managed not to mention the chicken tax in this one is beyone me. Its a major reason in itself there even is an american truck industry left today, they would not have lasted long competing with the rest of the world.
It's a bit funny to see which cars the different countries have most often. In Southern Europe, there are often small cars, such as a Fiat 500, or a Seat Ibiza, if you moved to central Europe, the cars become a little bigger, and are in both sedan versions and combi coupes. And when you come to Scandinavia, station wagons and SUVs are often used the most. And if you come to Oslo, you will see an incredible number of electric cars. The Resla is probably the best-selling electric car in Norway right now. But you will also see Hybrids such as Mercedes Suv, Volkswagen hybrid, and Mitsubishi and Toyota hybrids. They are not often seen in Europe.
Opec is an organization. Just like any organization like nato, unions, veterans association, etc. A organization is created with a certain goal in mind. Opec is a organization of countries. If they were private companies the organization could have been seen as anti capitalist.
Your oilproducers are exporting their oil. If there were rules that they had to supply the US first, your prices would look different. But today the price of oil is set internationally, and doesn't take any care as to where the oil is produced.
The price is international, but not every oil refinery is able to process all types of crude oil, it depends on density and sulfur content. So you cannot simply switch to another source. This is why the US still imports oil even though they have their own domestic production.
Check out crash test footage of smart cars vs bigger stuff. It's how it's built rather than how big or tough it is On crash test footage.. have you seen volvo trucks? They have crazy good crash structure/driver protection
They're the size of trucks, but pickups are a waste of space. If you are wanting to transport something of any size, just hire a trailer, assuming your car has a towbar. A Ute is much more practical than a pickup as it is smaller. A Ute is a converted car with a deck on the back, whereas a pickup is a purpose built vehicle.
It is crazy to use up your oil domestic oil reserves, and not save it and use other countries oil when it’s available. When your oil reserves runs low you get the country’s head in a noose. A lot of countries are leaving their own oil in the ground and are using other countries oil.
This reinforces the stereotype that Americans are noted for conspicuous consumption and wasteful behaviour. The fuel shortages led to new legislation but instead of trying to be more responsible with fuel use, people just found a loophole to carry on buying big, wasteful vehicles. Again it comes down to a culture that values individual freedom above collective responsibility.
The fuel efficiency regulations were introduced, then the US car maker lobbied the government to circumvent the rules by having it averaged out over the total car vehical sales. So you can have fuel gusslers that are offset by the more efficient vehicles. It is a case of not spending money on development of better engines. The engines overseas became more reliable than engines they replaced, because they were better engineered. But manufactured US engine reliability got worse. Never buy a US manufactured vehicle of any type or brand, they are trash.
In Europe those huge trucks are useless . But for safety in Europe you buy a Volvo. Check out the Volvo crash test ! I think it was IWrocker who reviewed a video about it. He was so amazed he immediately wanted to buy one afterwards. Oh after watching a vid about the capacities of an Audi in the snow that one as well.
those US trucks are to big for European cities and urban areas, our cars are more compact, those US trucks would take two car park spaces and wouldn't fit in our standard garages
You say you feel safe in a bigger car. Well, here's the thing. A lot of big American pick-ups do not meet European safety standards without modifications made to what would be sold in the USA. In fact some of them will never meet European Standards as in Europe we consider pedestrian impact safety as a part of the regulations. The mistake you are making is assuming because it is bigger, it is safer. Many small cars from European and Japanese manufactures are so much safer in an accident than many SUVs and especially pickup trucks.
How do you sell a child? Well, in the old days sometimes children were advertised for adoption, or as they said you could have a baby from reading the Sunday news paper 🤔🤣

Hi Jib. What's happened to your hair? - you look different! Anyway, your other respondents have put your straight - trucks are wide, so they only can use major roads. Therefore only commercial drivers will obviously be enthusiastic about trucks. In videos past, I've told you about city centres (both in Britain and Europe) where even normal car drivers have to pull in their wing mirrors to navigate along lanes (narrow roads). How then could they possibly manage with a truck ?? Well, the answer is - if you have some kind of a truck, you'll be leaving it in an out-of-town carpark and taking a shuttle in. The Europeans are even further developed with many entire centres given over exclusively to pedestrian precincts.
That last part about tge irony of ev trucks is a normal argument. Many people claim to by ev to help the environment then we learn that they bough a truck just to go to the office. Plenty of irony there. People should just by their truck ev or not and shut up about their "sacrifices".

my thoughts on europe: roads too small. And the open bed (and how you load it) would be regulated to absolute death in for example Germany. But mostly it is a vehicle that's only useful in very specific situations. There is the occasional pickup trucks here, mostgly in rural areas or in snowy mountainous regions. But for most people it is just completely unnecessary and impractical. And there is no tradition to buy one anyway... And the roads are too small!
Personally i do like pick ups i just do not like or care at all about these modern elephant sized useless pick ups. But i mostly just prefer van's as to me they are way more usefull as all the stuff is inside out from the elements and van can do everything pick up can and i have way more options wich kind of vehicle i can buy from small kei size van to almost truck sized van. Modern pick ups there is only one option left wich is the elephant sized vanity show off truck.
About feeling safer when you’re in the biggest vehicle, that’s a race to the bottom/very individualistic way of thinking, tat reminds me of a very worrying game theory/prisoners dilemma video I watched recently.. Of course there’s the same underlying psychology going on in the rest of he world, but I guess we have more counterbalances like regulations or a ‘keeping the roads safe for all of us/the most vulnerable users’ like cyclist and pedestrians and children. [We’ve more of a road/street design optimised for multi-modal maximum safety and traffic flow as well in the Netherlands, instead of maximising lanes and parking spaces.] Why would I feel safer in a bigger, more dangerous vehicle whilst already being very aware that driving any car already means I have 1/3’s higher risk of killing somebody than dying myself?
Jacking up the truck prices even higher… “Market adjustments” year after year. Why? Because they have been getting away with it. I will not buy your overpriced trucks anymore. You have lost my sale and I hope someone at Ford reads this. Even with the sales on trucks being 10-15% off right now they are still not worth buying and knowing you are pillaging consumers even harder next year. Better off putting my money into investments than losing 50k to depreciation because I will never be able to sell a 100k truck like Ford does. Nearly doubling the price of trucks in such a short period of time is a complete disgrace and a slap in the face to consumers ready to buy your product. Peace out.

USA have an increase in traffic accidents, the only western country with that.
Yes, people who drive them only consider their own safety rather than the safety of anyone they hit. There have been cases where the poor visibility has caused drivers to run over their own small child who was playing in the driveway.
Bunch of companies working together to maintain high prices is called a cartel and it forbidden in most places.

Toyota Corolla has been the biggest volume seller in the world year on year, and still is this year.
7:30 yeah sure there is a name for it, its called a cartel.
Came here to write this, there”s one more word for it Oligopol. That’s were we get the word oligarchs from. But I like cartel more.
when workers join an association, it is called a union
When the producers of a product join together in an association, we call it a cartel
That said, it isn't super rare to see pickups here but the largest is the size of a ford ranger(raptor) / toyota tacoma vs an f150/250/350 etc
Artic trucks are about as big as you see (mildly modded lifted on 35"tyres of production pickups)
OPEC is a oligopoly, basically a monopoly, but a group of companies working together.
22:47 No, it's doubled. In 1973, 1.186 billion barrels were imported; in 2023, 2.368 billion.
Think most of the larger American pickup trucks would require an actual truck license to drive them in other countries
Cartel, the word for OPEP you were looking for is cartel (yeah, the same word for drug cartel)
Its probably also a cultural thing. A lot of Americans want to own and have full control of something, even if they use it once every 5 years
I wonder how many people have got a big truck and yet complain about the price of eggs.
Cars are big in the USA so a smaller car looks very small .
Even your suburban streets are as wide as runways, so it makes sense.
I remember laughing about the whole concept of a car with a mate from school.
We were in fits of laughter as in essence, a car is 'a room that moves'.
Another way to feel safer could be to avoid having tanks on the roads altogether 😅
You should watch the video "These Stupid Trucks are Literally Killing Us" from Not Just Bikes.
Check out crash test footage of smart cars vs bigger stuff. It's how it's built rather than how big or tough it is
On crash test footage.. have you seen volvo trucks? They have crazy good crash structure/driver protection
Let's make clear, the car manufactures lobbied for those exceptions on CAFE.
A lot of countries in Europe are moving over to using electric vehicles.
As someone who,s job was in a body shop for 50 years cars don’t impress me unless they are older original and looked after. Just as I like women
Trucks are very useful. America is big so if you gonna go get a lot of feed for you cows you can use your truck instead of a slow tractor.
Never buy a US manufactured vehicle of any type or brand, they are trash.
sometimes this flag behind you looks like you have a halo of stars.
One of the reasons European don’t drive is because of taxation. The heaver the vehicle the more tax you have to pay.
Watch NotJustBikes video about trucks if you haven’t. A great take on the problem with trucks and SUVs that nobody talks about.
another name for union scenario is collective bargaining, where workers or consumers get together to negotiate a good deal for themselves
Because most Brits and Europeans men are not overcompensating for ‘lacking’ in other areas.🤣.
For just 9999 and 990 payments of 99 down, that truck could be urrs
How do you sell a child? Well, in the old days sometimes children were advertised for adoption, or as they said you could have a baby from reading the Sunday news paper 🤔🤣
The word youre looking for is cartel
After that most "Amusing" attempt at our accent, you can look up a video on the history of the Australian ute 🙃🛻
In most cases it is "cultural" - it is a status symbol.
And yet the same people are probably complaining that they haven’t got enough money for their groceries.
Big and crap does not equal good.
The pave paradise and put up a parking lot. Joni Mitchell 1970. 54 years ago and still America has not learnt.
There's a video on i wonna say Carwow (UA-cam channel) that shows him driving an American pickup in the UK its worth a look.
Not one mention of " why don't Europeans like trucks " !!
Is it just me, or do you find the narrators voice annoying !?
How many times would need to " hire a moving company" !?
Why would you need a massive truck " just in case" !?
" SEDAN"!? To me , that's a covered chair from the 1700/1800s, that was carried by your servants, that you sat in, so you wouldn't get wet outdoors.
Came here for the lame puns and as always, I wasn't disappointed.
That last part about tge irony of ev trucks is a normal argument. Many people claim to by ev to help the environment then we learn that they bough a truck just to go to the office.
Plenty of irony there.
People should just by their truck ev or not and shut up about their "sacrifices".
Completely different topic. I have just been watching a UK train cab ride video, very relaxing . These are quite long and therefore may not be suitable for a reaction video.Nonetheless worth having a look at, Don Coffey's channel is quite popular. Just a suggestion.
my thoughts on europe: roads too small.
They are clumsy.
[We’ve more of a road/street design optimised for multi-modal maximum safety and traffic flow as well in the Netherlands, instead of maximising lanes and parking spaces.]
Why would I feel safer in a bigger, more dangerous vehicle whilst already being very aware that driving any car already means I have 1/3’s higher risk of killing somebody than dying myself?
A consortium!
Peace out.
I think you're thinking of a 'cartel'.
These trucks would never be a thing in the uk there not needed also the insurance mot road tax and tesla truck or any ev car isnt safe
SUV is not safe on the road, poor maneuverability, high possibility of sideways rolling, dangerous for all road users....unless you are driving in a field.
rise up lights 😂
That's ridiculous 26:44 if you actually look at the regulations and safety features.. Trucks lose out over well made cars.
Is a pickup truck safe?
Are Pickup Trucks Safer Than Cars To Drive in 2024? |
Drivers of pickup trucks are at even greater risk than drivers of SUVs. When the combined risk is considered, SUVs and pickup trucks are revealed to be significantly more dangerous than just about any car'.17 Jan 2024. Peace out.
A lot of those big trucks have to haul a lot of those fat asses.
Just not needed neither do most yanks but you buy them ?
Connor
When you were a kid sitting in your parent's carr, thinking to yourself
"What the 'Hell' am I sitting in...?!"
_Why_ were you thinking *'what the Hell'* to yourself?! What age do / did American kids say such words (twenty-odd years ago)???! Here, (some) parents would (mostly) be miffed if they knew their offspring use such language...
Those words are used by 'grown-ups' (adults) here not kids / children...
And you can't even claim _that phrase_ as a 'one-off' because I have heard you say the same phrase "when you were a kid" _before_ this__ time!!🇺🇲😮🌝🤔🤭
Daimler is pronounced Dye..mler - I'm German, and this is in fact how we pronounce it.
@dnocturn84
Owing to your comment, I have edited my own above, and deleted my mispronounced 'Day for Daimler", since you as a German and thus will naturally know the correct pronunciation.
Please accept my apology for my earlier error.
I don`t want to be mean but i think Conner might be on the spectrum.
They’re too big for our roads and are gas guzzlers. Any intelligent person has concern for the environment.
It’s a cartell
