- Trail running Mount LeConte via Appalachian Trail and Boulevard Trail from Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park 4k footage. This was an epic day! The trails were icy and treacherous in places, the temperatures were extremely cold, the wind was howling, but the views were amazing! We went over Mt. Ambler, to the Jump Off near Mt. Kephart, Myrtle Point, Cliff Top Mountain, the Mt. Leconte Lodge, and High Top (the actual summit of Mt. LeConte). National Parks USA. This is a longer one, but the views are worth it! #gsmnp #mtleconte #trailrunning #appalachiantrail

Thank you for watching and subscribing!
Awesome, thanks for documenting this & sharing!
Thanks for watching!
What a great video! Thanks
Thank you!
This is beautiful, thanks Steven. So cool to be able to see amazing trails like these from all the way in New Zealand.
Thank you, Sean! I just ran a different route up to LeConte today.
Great video, spectacular views. Thanks for sharing, as always.
Ciao !
Thanks for watching, Domenico!
I prayed for your ankles when I saw that ice. When I hiked Mt. LeConte we started in Gatlinburg and it was brutal but so rewarding. This video brought back so many good memories. THE VIEWS!!!
Lets do the skeleton! LOL
Ha thanks for the prayers! Yeah there are a few routes to get to LeConte, and they are all good hikes/runs! The views are definitely worth it!
I'm thinking we have to do Boulevard to the lodge this year. We haven't done it yet and I have a new knee for our 4th stay at LeConte Lodge.
Myrtle Point for sunrises and Clifftops for sunsets.
It’s a good route
@UltraTrailSteven Also meant to say that yes I've smelled that plant that smells like pot in the Smokies. I'm pretty sure it also grows wild in our local Walmart paring lot because it always smells the same 😄.
@@dandtintennessee7675 😂😂
There are not many things that stop me from running but wind is at the top of that list. OMG and that ice!!!! I have never run in the Smokeys but the AT looks very similar in some spots to PA, of course we don't have the elevation. Loving that running vest brotha. Kudos to you and Lee for getting it done.
Thanks, Sage! Yeah the wind was brutal, just have to have good gear (just like biking). Yeah very rocky trails.
That smell on the trail was me. I was following you. Im sorry I should’ve said hi.
So much damn ice. 😂. I can’t help but think about how close these trails are to me. I want to run them. I just need to convince the family to take a Gatlinburg vacation.
Dude the family would love it! Such a beautiful area! Lots to do too.
Oh and I think the plant is “skunk cabbage”
Thank you for the video! Very informative! One question…are the trails there as narrow as they appear?
Yes they are very narrow in places.
@@UltraTrailSteven thank you
Again…thank you for the info and your willingness to share. I am going to do this hike this coming weekend, do I need a parking pass at Newfound Gap? Also, it appears the trail is marked fairly well, is that accurate? Thank you.
@@timanderson572 the trail is marked very well. I’m not sure about a parking permit in the Smokey’s. However, you will need to get to newfound gap before 9am if you want a parking spot
@@UltraTrailSteven understood. I plan to get there at sunrise. Traveling from Ohio on Friday, to do it on Saturday. Using it as part of my Grand Canyon Rim to Rim training which I’m doing in late August.
That trail looks so epic! Little sketchy with the ice but other than that, looks like such a wonderful time! Really enjoyed this video.
Yeah it was beautiful! Without the ice it would be a much quicker route for sure, but still a great day!
Wow! Icy trails and Amazing views!
Very icy and beautiful views!
Great day out there! The new go pro picked up the views very nicely! Well done!
Thanks, Dan! It was beautiful!
Dare I say, your best video yet! Nice job! So glad you were able to get the workout in, I had my doubts about the possible conditions. Looked so different than when I was there in July 2008!
Thank you, Steve! I really appreciate it! I can’t wait to do many more miles in the Smokies!
How are you liking the new Salomon vest? I really like my advanced skin 12.
I am loving the Sense Pro vest! It is so comfortable! Full review coming soon
I remember taking a trip down to Virginia (or maybe it was North Carolina? Around Fancy Gap)…the only good part of that entire trip was seeing the mountains. They’re so expansive and makes you feel so small. Thank you for the views and for doing the hard thing in the cold!
(I don’t know if it was the Smokey mountains or Appalachian mountains or what the difference is between them but I loved that part of the trip).
My jaw dang near hit the floor with the view from the jump off! I mean WOW. That’s it, I’m going hiking this weekend (nowhere near as epic tho)
So beautiful but I would definitely cry when I got to the part of the trail with the cable lol 😆 I’m a chicken.
If it smells like marijuana…I mean…
I feel like that’s a good Prepping with Sarge question.
I know bay leaves can smell like weed, but not too familiar with plant life in the Smokey’s.
That’s so cool you can see the ridge and where you’ve been and where you started…how early did you start?? It looks like it took no time at all to get to where you went.
I’m obsessed with this video, so much beauty (as Lee slips in the background)
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching, Matthew!
Very good... Like your video
Thank you!
Last time I was up there I researched that smell. I found info that it was Skunk Goldenrod.
Interesting! I’ll look it up. It certainly smelled like MJ
What a gorgeous place! I'm amazed at the similarities to our White Mountains... you're just a hair taller, with a lot less snow and ice! 😆 I love hiking in those conditions, but running on ice still scares me. I like the jacket OVER the vest, it probably keeps your bottles frost free? And please tell me you weren't BOTH "activating your Hothands" in the car together... 😳
Yeah there wasn't much running on the ice. Lee actually fell twice. Yes the jacket over the vest is key; no frozen bottles or hard gels (also helps keep the GoPro battery from dying). HAHAHAHA we had to get the hot hands ready to go!
Any idea/advice on how icy the trail might typically be in early November(realizing that storms/conditions can vary)?
Generally not very icy in November. Just keep an eye on the weather. But if concerned, the Kahtoola EXOspikes would be a good choice.
@@UltraTrailSteven thank you for the prompt reply! I have yaktrax just in case. Are there any typical water crossings? It looked like you had some wet areas, but they appeared to be from snow melt.
@@cyndilee6296 hmm... I don't recall any water crossing that did not have bridges over them. When it rains, the trail becomes a creek though.
Thank you!!
Great video! You may have encountered skunk cabbage??
Thank you, Tammy! Yes, I believe it was skunk cabbage.
How’s the water supply on this trail? Going there in September
There were a couple a small streams that one could filter from if needed.
@@UltraTrailSteven thx your views were magnificent
incredible views!
The skies were so clear! Glad it wasn’t a smoky day
This is all too familiar. My partner and I took the AT from Newfound Gap to Charlies Bunion-with a stop at the Jump-Off- in February 2020 and encountered similar conditions. That ice is brutal! We had traversed the Alum Cave Trail up to Mount LeConte the day prior, and the footing was much better. What a magical area, though; definitely hoping to return some day.
That sounds like an awesome trip!
Jealous of these trails!
There are so many beautiful Trails and Smokies! One day I will hopefully join the 900 club
It might not be what you smelled on the way up, but wet bears can smell a lot like someone smoking weed.
Interesting... hmmm
