- Disney Plus just dropped a new Diary of a Wimpy movie and this time... it's the sequel to their first. It's Rodrick Rules. And wow, this one is terrible. So let's bask in the misery as well as compare it to the incredible, cult classic original film.

Gotta say, the animated Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies just really accentuate how psychopathic and insane the Heffley family is while also showing that Rodrick's the only normal guy there.
I think Rodrick’s pretty terrible as well, but yeah Greg is easily the worst. The parents are def rather normal, just awkward I’d say.

I don’t get why the animated shows are all about showcasing bad people being bad to each other instead of flawed people learning to be better with each other. Like whats the point of watching if its just to see the path of awfulness get into full swing, and become diffused in a shallow way
5:26 That happened in the original book. The party was a way bigger deal in movies. Sloth Greg didn't blackmail Roderick. They cleared up the house, replaced the door and moved on to the next thing. 6:07 In the book the door said "Hi Roderick." 11:42 That frustrated me too.

It's wild because these 2 movies have been exactly like the books, the only thing they forget to include was the sense of humor. They literally rip jokes straight from the book that were hilarious on the page but the delivery and timing is so off and the art style is so bland it sucks any level of comedy that was present in the book completely out into the void
I skimmed thru the book and a lot of the book is more mean spirited than the movie actually, down to Rodrick being mad that they didn’t record his performance right and stuff.. but it’s executed in a way that works, it’s really odd. Idk.
i read the books a long time ago but from what i remember the new one seems to be a more faithful adaptation (which I'm not saying makes it better than the previous movie)

I'd actually say the live action films are closer to the books, or at least Rodrick Rules is. This whole idea of Greg wanting to be best friends with his brother and showing interest in his music is not at ALL in the books

Yeah, at least The Long Haul is a memorable albeit disgusting movie, a trashy movie but one that can never be forgotten about. The animated movies are so unlikeable and so uninteresting that they don't even warrant being talked about.

The worst part is that it didn’t even have to turn out this way. If Kinney just had listened to feedback and learned what made the original great, he could have made it at least serviceable or even good. But he didn’t learn much, and I just think these Disney plus Wimpy kid movies are just bad, and that Kinney will keep making them until he gets bored.
In the book, it's worse because Greg never gets out of the downstairs area but he doesn't get blackmail footage as far as I remember.
7:27 That's not entirely true. In the later books Roderick teases Greg alot less. They get along in whole book in the newest one Diper Overload. I think the characters soften up a little bit as the books go on.

I think Rodrick Rules was the first movie I ever asked to buy. I’ve had it on iTunes since I was super little and have watched it 10-15 times all the way through (and pulled up certain scenes countless times on top of that). It’s a perfect kids movie because it’s actually super sweet with a nice message and lively characters without being so dumb a parent would hate it. Really sad these reanimated versions are so garbage because I think the art style could have been used to lock these stories in a timeless package by allowing for some of the more outlandish parts of the books to be used but nah we get boring soulless cash grabs

Some of the changes are actually more similar to the book, but that's what makes the original movies so much better than the books imo. The changes they made are actually GOOD and help improve the story.

Btw, fantastic video on Rodrick Rules Mauricio, the original movie holds a special place in my heart from both nostalgia and how it holds up incredibly to this day, and your coverage on this adaptation was far more entertaining than both Disney adaptations combined, stellar stuff as always man!

I think Disney was trying to make their relationship as brothers the worst ever so it had a "bigger" impact at the end (it didn't). But, by doing that, they made the relationship so bad that when they 'make up' at the end, it's absolutely not earned in the slightest. They also just did everyone's characters so bad...
The only good thing about this movie was the resolution with Greg and Rodrick working out their differences

One of the rare times the live action version was better. It’s sad how bland these animated adaptations look when compared to Nickelodeon’s Big Nate animated series.

Ok, so Greg staying in the basement WAS in the book, which I hated, in this I have no idea how they would bond, I think the biggest issue is that they just copy the book and rush it, unlike the classics which make things better
I think it's very strange to act like this movie is following up the live action movies when it's another adaptation of the books. Like, being faithful doesn't necessarily make it a better movie, but shitting on it for not being like a different adaptation is a choice.

Wimpy kid movies are the rare times when the live action adaptation is better then the animated adaptation
I ADORE the og films, they hold a place of nostalgia as much as the books themselves. Which is why I was personally offended by the first disney doawk film (saw it, it sucked, not surprised), and to think they would even bother with a second one, when we have DEVON BOSTICK.

I think Diary of a Wimpy Kid should’ve been an animated series from the start on Disney Plus more faithful to the books. As for the art style, i would’ve prefer either classic 2D or that 3D like The Peanuts Movie.
I can never remember the actors name but I seen Deven in Flashpoint he nails the big brother Character. When he was with the baby. I was going to see the first after release date but pushed aside and It was my birthday that year. I heard seen negative reviews and I took it in. Guess that saved me from dying my day I blow out the dynamite.
I don’t remember the books that much, since I read them when I was 9. But Disney’s new movie looks adapted straight from the books.

The cartoon basically just copies the book word for word, it’s like an anime, it just copies the manga word for word, no original content, also the movies are really short, bc the book is pretty short

I agree with all your points but one thing to mention is that it's not Disney ruining this, it's Jeff Kinney making these pointless remakes of 3 perfectly good movies instead of starting this film series at The Ugly Truth as a continuation of the first 3 movies. By they time they actually reach The Ugly Truth in late 2025, the actor who voices Greg will be 20 and they will have to find a new voice actor.
