I am huge Star Trek fan going back to 1966 and of course, a follower of TA. I have to say however that "The Expanse" is a much more realistic look at our future than ST will ever be. The homework that Ty Franck and the other producers of TE have done to get the science right is impeccable. Gene's future utopia is a wonderful hope but TE is likely the closer reality to our future.
This is also an example of the best way to adapt a series of books. 1 book = 1 season. Reacher and other shows are doing this well too. Trying to do a book compressed into a 2 hour movie is always unfulfilling.
@@JamesDatWorkI;'m pretty sure book 1 actually ends about halfway into season 2. Then book 2 is the rest of season 2 and about half of season 3, with book 3 only being the last half of season 3. Then seasons 4, 5 and 6 follow the plot of each book (with a scattering of storylines from the novellas sprinkled into the mix, too)
it should of been a star trek series, pre warp drive .. instead of the epstien drive you have the impulse drive, the beginning of solar system travel... nothing else in the series would have to change other than the name of a device or governing body here or there.
Ceres was spun up to 1/3 Earth gravity. The bird demonstrats this by not having to flap normally. Good reaction to a fantastic show. It'll grab you by episode four.

Belters and Martians live in 1/3rd of Earth's gravity, so just imagine that you're on a planet that makes you feel 3 times heavier than you are used to.
My brother told me about this show and I watched the first couple episodes and didnt' think it was for me. I couldn't really figure it out and what it was about from those first two. I dropped out. A little later I heard that Amazon was picking it up after the 3rd season, so I gave it another go and once episode 4 came around, I was hooked. Hope you guys give it a chance. It's good for reactions.
Same thing happened to me. I kept not being able to get past episode 3. One day I just powered through and after 4 and 5, I couldn't stop and it became one of my favorite things on the planet. I try to explain to folks that it's building the whole universe in the first few episodes, and they're really important, but it's all slow for a reason. If someone gets to the end of the 1st season and doesn't really like it, then it's not going to get better for them. But if someone likes sci-fi, I try to beg them to watch until episode 5 AT LEAST before making their decision, lol.
Did the same thing when it first came out...gave up at episode 3. A few years back I see a random gif on Discord of a ship laying down the law via PDCs and it looks cool as hell. I ask where is it from and someone tells me The Expanse so I figure I'll have a look. Start watching waiting to get to the scene found in the gif. By time I get past "The Hook" episode I start realizing that I had already watch the show before and gave up on it. This time having watched 1x4 I realized I needed to just keep watching and so glad I did. Best damn show I've ever watched!
I grew up watching Star Trek - specifically TNG - and it will always be my favourite Tv show of all time. But I think The Expanse is the best sci-fi TV series ever made. Its easily the best ci-fi show of the last decade. Its a show that just keeps on getting better and better.
I so glad you guys are doing this. Star Trek is my favourite Sci-fi series, it's like a warm blanket on a cold day or spending time with a close friend. The Expanse though is the best Sci-Fi ever made, but it's more like going on a great date and starting an exciting relationship or succeeding at a difficult task. It's an emotional ride with endearing characters. . . . . . . . I think the bird doesn't look that bad regardless.
@ a lot happens, but it takes time to establish who is who, why things are happening, and what each faction wants to happen next. It took me a while to get my footing in this world.
I felt this series got off to a bit of a slow start but it gets a lot better as it goes on. After finishing the tv series I was inspired to read the books. I think it is one of the best sci-fi series ever.
Loved this show, looking forward to seeing your reactions to it! I can tell you this, I started this series 3 times because people kept telling me how good it was. I made myself get through the first few episodes (five or six) and then it just grabbed me by both hands and I never let go! Just curious guys, did you decide to drop Battlestar?
Casting for this show had so many parameters...strong preferences for mixed and non-caucasian ethnicities, huge casting calls for tall & slender body types with an emphasis on unusual postures. Almost everyone had vocal coaching to master their unique accents.
I don't blame them for not remembering episode 1 well, I've watched and rewatched, and those first like 4 episodes are really the pilot for the series. It takes a while to get going.
They go to great lengths to make the technology "realistic" in this series. For instance, ships are built like skyscrapers with the engine on the bottom, so when they "burn" to accelerate it creates artificial gravity, and then when they cut the engines off they go back to zero g. The books were written by two former assistants of GRR Martin, writing under a single pen name, and the stories are structured very similarly to Song of Ice and Fire.
The first time I tried to watch The Expanse, the first episode didn't hook me. I revisited the show a few months later and pushed past that first episode and I am glad I did. The first three seasons of this show are among my most favorite and cherished science fiction shows. I do think that the story fell off after those 3 seasons, but I still love the show. Regarding it being a Patreon exclusive, I understand why that is the case. However, I am already paying for UA-cam Premium, so I generally refuse to pay more for sitting in front of a screen. Having said that, once you guys are done with the entire first season, I would totally be willing to sign up for a month to binge your reactions because I do enjoy your commentary for Star Trek when I see it here on UA-cam.
The last UNCUT reaction is getting posted Tuesday and the edited reactions should all be posted in the next couple weeks. In addition to being available via membership we will also be selling the complete season as a collection for one-time purchase. It will include all UNCUT and edited reactions.
Of all the sci fi shows and movies that has been made over the past 70 years The Expanse" IMHO, is the closest to reality in that this could be the to what the actual future will be (with "2001: A Space Odyssey" being the exception).
A friend highly recommended this to me back when it first aired. Mere minutes in, I knew it wasn't my cup of tea. This edited review has increased by 10 times my watch time of the show. The only positive "oh, didn't realize that" from this episode was recognizing one actor as the guy who later plays Oliver Queen, The Green Arrow.
Oh WOW! I am here for this! It's a brilliant series! The Expanse and DS9 should make you very happy.........or maybe I won't be here for this if it's patreon only! That's sad, but then again I'm already up to series 5 on another channel, so I mustn't grumble.
It's funny you should mention that it'd be cool if the shitty CG bird was actually a hologram and they show that... Pets like your lovely cat would be a huge liability in low or zero G- feathers or cat hair or whatever sheds would get into everything. Also, what's the cat's name? Does he get any Fireball whiskey? Maybe some merch? A small Trek uniform?
I was impressed by the adaptation (though I've not finished it). The original books are by a pen name for two guys, one of whom is George R. R. Martin's PA, and they always have a glowing quote from GRRM on the cover about how good they are - which I always found a bit cheeky :p In some ways The Expanse is an homage to a lot of 80s sci-fi tropes, you mention Total Recall and Blade Runner. Also I think they added something to the opening narration about Ceres having water but Earth and Mars took it - which was a hasty fix after the writers of the books had assumed Ceres doesn't have water and then NASA discovered some a few years later!
Josh plays D&D, right? as do I. years ago, one of my best friends used to run a scifi RPG called Traveler. watching The Expanse is like being in his campaign world. I swear... watching it was like he never died and I was back in his game.
The Expanse is actually based on an RPG campaign that they played, the characters are characters from the campaign they were running. It might have even been traveler. You should look into it.
Would love to see y'all go through this whole show. It is truly excellent. It didn't really hook me until season 2 (mostly because season 1 is a mystery that I had a hard time following the first time through), but it became one of my favorite shows ever after that. It had me literally jumping out of my seat with a racing heart in some episodes.
I am currently rewatching this show with my girlfriend, who is watching it for the first time and although she really likes it, I realized how different and slow the early episodes are in comparison to what comes later. They are in no way Bad, but they are a good example for a Show needing to find its footing first
OMG this is so exciting! I love you two and i think you would love this show! Wait you have seen it before?! Lol. It can be hard to start i remember from my experience. But it's really good.
Like many have said it takes a while to get into, but once you do it's very rewarding because unlike many TV shows it tells a complete story with a beginning, middle and end. This is why it's very rewatch able because the seemingly random bits of dialogue pay off 2,3 even 4 seasons later. There are no "filler" episodes like you kids say. Everything dialogue, plot points etc has a purpose. I really hope you continue because it's a great series 😊
AGREED and well said,I can't get enough of the Expanse, such a-GREAT-tv show. With the decline of current star-trek tv series the Expanse is such a true sci-fi treat for sci-fi fans. I always go back for a rewatch of this show, like you said there are no filler episodes which is GOOD.Sorry to go on a tangent, but, been waiting years for a REAL quality sci-fi tv series to come on.
One thing I did want to mention; while the show wasn't "cheap" it's budget wasn't huge either, particularly in the first two seasons. Based on what I've heard, a first season episode of The Expanse cost about half what a first season episode of Star Trek discovery cost, despite being filmed in the same studio complex here in Toronto, and starting production only two years later.
The Expanse - you will not be disappointed, but for full enjoyment, pay attention to detail, not for the casual viewer. (As for Seasons, 1 and 2, as insanely crazy as they are, are actually scene setting and world building. So, you can quit after S1, you will really be missing out.) The Expanse ranks up there for me for TV series right up there with S1 of True Detective. You will be confused and lost as to what's going on, but you are being put in the shoes of the cast - and this starts out as a mystery, and, man, are they ever lost.
AGREED. After Battlestar Galactica ended I was waiting for the next GREAT sci-fi tv series, then The Expanse came on and I was hooked from the first episode.I've rewatched this series several times and it's so different than any other sci-fi tv series.NOW,I'm waiting for the next GREAT sci-fi tv series that'll equal or surpass The Expanse. God bless
The first episode is slow, and then it picks up momentum as the series progresses, it's a great series. Hey they had a lot of world building to fit in that first episode.
Special Effects =/= Visual Effects Special Effects is what happens on set. So explosions, debris, puppets, etc. Visual Effects is what you're complaining about. Digital effects added in post. Best is if they go hand in hand, with smart use of either's strength
Season 2 showed some sci fi, that I had never encountered ever. Awesome imagination from the writers. I read the first 6 books, strangely I think the tv series is better, it’s expanded upon.
I saw the first few episodes of The Expanse on Netflix, binged them one afternoon. Decided to get back to the rest later. Three months later I was flipping through Netflix, looking for something to watch and came across The Expanse again. I figured if I hadn't thought about it once in three months I didn't really care. Never saw any more.
Okay, what's "the first few"? I tried watching it multiple times and never got past episode 3. I finally tried again one day and got to episodes 4/5 and never looked back. It became one of my favorite shows ever. At least in my Top 3. It definitely starts slow, but for a good reason. It's building the solar system and giving you important information you'll need for the rest of the series. If you get through the 1st season and don't want to keep watching, then it's not for you. But I'd give it a few more episodes if you only watched the first 2 or 3. 🤷🏻♀ Just my experience.
Please remember that this is an adaptation of a series of books so Iike a book it takes time to for the story to build…btw a series suggestion FRINGE. In the meantime keep up the good work loving your Star Trek reactions
Omg, your cats face! So handsome. Like s cougar. I lost my Baba (Buddy) for Xmas, it's really tough, still crying about it. Just checking this out, I tried when it came out but i still don't like it. Ill skip these vids but I appreciate the edited format
the first season is the best by far. the last two (5+6) are complete ass and boring as a hell. all in all it went downhill when amazon took over for the last 3 seasons. 4 is still okay-ish though.
I really liked the concept of this show: Human expansion into the solar system. No aliens, transporters, warp speed, etc. Very realistic. But I gave up on it after watching most of the first season because of all the darkly lit scenes and mumbled dialogue. I literally couldn't see and hear enough of what was going on to follow the complicated plots.
It shouldn't be that dark. Maybe you need to fiddle with some settings? As for dialogue, subtitles help tremendously, especially since there's a lot of Belter creole. I mean, if you get to the end of the 1st season and still don't like it, then you're probably not going to like the rest. But the scenes shouldn't be so dark you can't see a lot - that can be something fixed on your end. It's worth it to see it through the whole 1st season, with subtitles, if you're a fan of sci-fi at all.
I feel that the expanse season 1 is very much analogous to TNG season 1. Something you have to get through as the production team and actors stumble into their roles and get their bearings, and things actually start getting good and taking off as season 2 gets going.
Technically a Political drama but if you’re looking for Star Wars, you’re not getting it here. There is some combat but it’s way more realistic and less flashy most of the time

Oh, you guys are gonna love this. Actually "the science" is far more realistic in this show than pretty much any other sci-fi.

It's actually a blueprint for the future in my mind. It's a big scary tbh.

The homework that Ty Franck and the other producers of TE have done to get the science right is impeccable. Subscribed. Season 1 does have a coherent ongoing story, one that does not end until s2.e5. The last episode of x1 has some great stuff in it, and a cliffhanger to boot, but it is pretty clear that it was not the end of the ongong story. The show is also very good in presenting episodes which can be enjoyed as a stand-alone piece, too. Season 1 is a bit of a surprise in that it is not a shoot-em-up space opera like most of today's SF fans cut their teeth on. The show is also very, very dense. There are no throwaway scenes. Just about everything presented to you has meaning in the ongoing stories, even if that meaning is not at all apparent for several seasons.
Yep, there's stuff from season 1 that has payoffs in seasons 5 and 6. These writers are playing the long game.

Two questions:
Who is your favorite character on The Expanse, and why is it Amos?
Slow beginning, I myself had dropped it after 3 episodes. I gave it a second try a few months later and it quickly became my favourite series.
I had a similar experience with this show.

i even needed 3 trys. First 3 ep. 2. after 2 yrs 5 or 6 ep. A few years later fight through 1 season. After that was ok 😉

Agreed, a lot of people have a problem with it, I always assumed it was the gravity thing making it look unnatural, but apparently not in this case

The best show since Star Trek. Love it. The science is great too. It never gets in the way of the story.

The Bird is flying weirdly, because of the low gravity, it doesn't need to flap it's wings anywhere near as much to stay in the air..
Which makes it look worse, because there's that weirdness. It amplifies any quality issues..

Based on what I've heard, a first season episode of The Expanse cost about half what a first season episode of Star Trek discovery cost, despite being filmed in the same studio complex here in Toronto, and starting production only two years later.
self teleporting cat, nice.
nice hat miller
Keeps the rain off my head.
So they're gonna bail halfway through the first season on this too?
The Expanse - you will not be disappointed, but for full enjoyment, pay attention to detail, not for the casual viewer. (As for Seasons, 1 and 2, as insanely crazy as they are, are actually scene setting and world building. So, you can quit after S1, you will really be missing out.) The Expanse ranks up there for me for TV series right up there with S1 of True Detective. You will be confused and lost as to what's going on, but you are being put in the shoes of the cast - and this starts out as a mystery, and, man, are they ever lost.
new show 🥳
It took me a few episodes to get into it but just like TNG it keeps getting better.
Star Trek Vi waiting room....
This is the only SyFy show I liked enough to watch to the end. I know amazon finished it but the first 3 seasons were still great.
Wow. Just wow.
9:22 The Sound?: Tribbles
Flabbytabby stole the show~
The Expanse is a FANTASTIC show.
The only bad part of this show is that it is unfinished. To know how it ends, you have to read the books.
It’s one story period
The first seasons of the expanse are excellent.
You may be disappointed at the shortage of courtroom episodes of the show.
Lots of Bobbie Draper though.
Mal from Firefly is a criminal with a conscience.
James Holden has a conscience, for certain.
Special Effects =/= Visual Effects
Special Effects is what happens on set. So explosions, debris, puppets, etc. Visual Effects is what you're complaining about. Digital effects added in post. Best is if they go hand in hand, with smart use of either's strength
omg, yes
Hey, Spot's back! Why doesn't he chill with you guys during your Star Trek videos?
Oh! A cat!
9:20 🥁🥁📀
Season 2 showed some sci fi, that I had never encountered ever. Awesome imagination from the writers. I read the first 6 books, strangely I think the tv series is better, it’s expanded upon.
That cat is crazy about you 2
I saw the first few episodes of The Expanse on Netflix, binged them one afternoon.
Have you officially bailed on Battlestar Galactica?
Yes, we did months ago
Yeah, at the time, I wasn't really into serialized shows either. For me nu BSG was just drama for drama's sake.
Omg, your cats face! So handsome. Like s cougar. I lost my Baba (Buddy) for Xmas, it's really tough, still crying about it. Just checking this out, I tried when it came out but i still don't like it. Ill skip these vids but I appreciate the edited format
Sorry for your loss
@targetaudience oh man thanks
the expanse is great. (except for season 4)
Farscape is where it's at
A sci-fi series praised for the wrong reasons.
This show is fantastic. If you can get past the early gen CGI I think you guys would really like Babylon 5 too.
This episode did wonders for my crush on Alex. What am I saying. I'm a dude man.
gravity boots...
yeah, that irked me too.
I would have loved the Expanse... if it wasnt for that shitty rushed last season.
Josh! You lost weight bro?
I loved The Expanse until the 4th Season. It lost me. Many people love it though
the first season is the best by far. the last two (5+6) are complete ass and boring as a hell. all in all it went downhill when amazon took over for the last 3 seasons.
No spoilers but you are wrong about one of those.
Season 1 is just so dense with lore building and it takes time for all the characters to really develop
More cat. Less expanse.
The blue lighting in the show makes this so painful to watch. Plus nothing really happens till the 3rd season. This show is very overrated.
I stopped watching this due to a lack of likeable characters. It felt like an annoying soap opera set in space.
Technically a Political drama but if you’re looking for Star Wars, you’re not getting it here. There is some combat but it’s way more realistic and less flashy most of the time
