Boras does his job for his clients but from a fan's perspective, I want to see these guys signed and ready to play. I'm a Red Sox fan and I'd love Montgomery, but not at Boras prices
Well we saw the first domino fall and Bellinger has to be disappointed because it’s unlikely he repeats 2023. He should’ve taken like $115-$120M/5. Now if he has a repeat of ‘21-‘22 which is more likely than a repeat of ‘23.
@@eaglewinnings8003 the people calling that deal a win for both sides are delusional or Boras puppets. He gets 80m guaranteed but it was reported he wanted 200m+ when the winter started.
As a LONGTIME Cubs fan, I'm furious. This is a fiasco with long, painful precedents that go back to the days (most of their sad history) when the Cubs were a laughingstock. Look, we're all agreed that Boras is a pain-in-the-ass, but you have to get past that. Here's the thing, the Cubs have no RELIABLE left-handed pop in their lineup. They have only prospects for center field and first base, and prospects are called 'prospects' for a reason. They have plenty of money and own their own network -- they have a guaranteed revenue stream. Should I tell you a previous occasion when the Cubs took this approach? In 1992, Larry Himes (the Cubs' GM) put a contract on the table and gave one of their young pitchers a noon deadline by which to sign. At noon, they withdrew the offer, so that when they spoke to the free agent pitcher at 12:05, they told him the offer was no longer available. In anger, encouraged by his agent, Greg Maddux signed with Atlanta. That was THIRTY-ONE YEARS ago. Guess who young Greg's agent was. The same guy currently representing 28-year-old Cody Bellinger. How did that work out for ya'? PCA may still turn out to be what everyone expects him to be, but he sure didn't demonstrate it up with the major league club last season. Like I said, they're called 'prospects' for a reason. Nothing is for certain -- ask Corey Patterson. Did you WATCH Bellinger last season? He appears to have fixed the hole in his swing, and he was nothing but CLUTCH! He became the best two-strike hitter in MLB. He gives you elite defense at two positions. He's a true 5-tool player. Like I said, nothing is for certain, but the Cubs have their own network and a guaranteed revenue stream. Occasionally -- judiciously -- you have to act like the big-market team that you are. If some team swoops in at the last minute and signs Cody Bellinger, I will be furious and heartbroken.
With all the money being spent by all clubs on the PhDs doing data analytics they have figured out that once a player hits 30-32 the contract structures of backloading a contract do not work for most teams unless they are a big market team and can take the hit. This is what all businesses do and in my opinion, the players have backed themselves in a corner expecting to get a contract this late in their careers.
If Boras knows he's going to have ten or so top players who are his clients going free agent all at the same time, then maybe he should have encouraged a few of them to work out extensions so he's not bidding against himself. This off-season is when his year-to-year until free agency philosophy has blown up in his face.
I think this year is somewhat of an anomaly. Many teams out of the mix early due to the whole TV Rights situation not getting sorted. Then you got 2 guys who have high ceilings and floors at their peak value and Montgomery who would be middle rotation guy on a contender but is peaking in a time where the FA pitching class is weak. Can’t blame him for Montgomery, J-Mo literally signed with him because he wanted to pursue FA. Snell and Bellinger are such oddball cases. Bellinger is really the only guy with leverage because if he plays well this year he can play off the Soto sweepstakes for an over pay and alleviate concerns about his bad years. Snell is such a weird one because he gives you no innings and gets hurt all the time but is also a Cy Young winner and on paper a great pitcher.
If you're Ross Atkins do you spend big money on Chapman who has limited offensive upside despite his D or on Cody Question Mark, OR save your dough to resign its 2 biggest stars in Vladdy and Bo who are up for renewal-extension next year?
I believe Bichette is also a Boras client in which case Boras won’t let him sign an extension, he wants all of his clients to go to FA so every team is bidding (in his mind).
I know it’s his job, but these players need to accept that they are huge risks. Bellinger is a huge risk. Chapman is as well, he can’t hit. Snell isn’t exactly a sure thing. Historically it’s about a 50/50 split on whether the Boras clients contracts end up being franchise cratering. For every Harper and Seager there is a Bryant and Bogaerts. Rendon for gods sakes. If you look at the eight biggest Boras deals, three were disasters (Fielder, Rendon and Strasburg).
I don’t think they’re colluding. Teams set a value to each player. It’s their right and prerogative to stick to that number. All it tells me is that Boras overvalues his guys.
AJ, why are you so butthurt and jealous about the cubs? Is it because they actually have fans? Or they’ve been really competitive over the last decade while the Sox are MLB’s laughingstock?
Everyone blames Boras but it's the players who hire him and can fire him. Greed has entered this equation in a large way and every player will not be a winner in this form of baseball roulette!
Im calling it now when players cant get that money they usually end up going to top contending teams for a one year deal with a high aav with a second year option
I’m sick of hearing this dudes name Boras! It’s absolutely insane he sounds like a major loser who’s actually doing a disservice To his clients. This guy is making an absolute financial killing off all these players and is holding them up this season from signing. Very tired of this guys name being thrown around like he’s some agent god
If Snell wanted massive 300 million dollar money then he should’ve put more effort during none contract seeking seasons. He has had two elite years in his career, both times when he was seeking a contract. Outside of that he has been a league average pitcher. Snell and Bellinger are learning that Non-contract years matter
Why would you put Bob Nightengale on? He’s the worst of the worst when it comes to publishing click bait nonsense. He is never right about anything, ever.
I hope 1 team gets super aggressive and scoops up most of these players. There's going to be a few teams that we look at and go "really...that's all they ended up doing this offseason???"
I don't see the rush. None of Boras clients have realistic expectations at this time. Only Snell 5 year 150 mill Yankee offer is the only real contract offer for any of them. Since Boras is not being serious he is being ignored. You play with the team you have not the team Boras imagines you should have. The Cubs did not make the playoffs with Bellinger so why triple his salary? Besides look at how bad Correa is.
There is a limit, especially when you realize that youth must be served. If you draft right, you can get Bellenger production from a Jordan Walker. Why pay 200 million when you can lock up one for 20 million. If the Yankees are worried about the luxury tax, negotiate an Ohtani contract. I'm sure Scnell could do fine on what he has in the bank. Until they work out some of these problems like TV contracts and over inflated salaries we will see more and more problems.
I think Boras and his clients knows what’s up. They’re banking on a set back and desperation to get a ridiculous contract with a weak FA class. At a certain point they’ll likely get less than Rodon money and years but it’s just a gamble. Bellinger is the only one that I can see taking a 1 year high AAV deal. Think if he performs this year it quashes fears about his history and he can ride the benchmark Soto will set to get an overpay from some desperate team.
Playoffs are such a crapshoot. Your best chance at success is to make the playoffs as conaistently as possible and hope to get hot in that 2-3 week period.
HOW can the Ohtani signing be valid? I mean he has delayed payments so the Dodgers only have to pay, what? a few miliion per year?, how is that NOT a violation of the luxury tax provisions??? In the NBA, the NBA would just say NO!, you can't do that! Since he signed, I just do not know how that is a valid contract!
If Boras is taking this long with these agents, imagine how long Soto is gonna take? I hope the Yankees just give him $500 million to $550 million and it’s done.
@@MT-tu8dt He's already turned down a $500 million contract with the Nationals which is why they traded him to the Padres. He's also younger than Ohtani. You can be sure he's getting way more that $550 million. He'll get over $700 million for sure.

This isn’t a problem and it doesn’t need to be fixed. If a player decides to hold out too long and lose their negotiating leverage, that’s on them.
